No more will you have to get out of the pool, dry off and do the same for your children to order food/drinks from inside. One of the newest additions to our staff is Trici, our poolside bartender. Trici will be poolside on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. We have stocked the bar with a huge selection of drinks that are just perfect for pool lounging. A huge “THANK YOU” to Greg Spitzer for building the bar! It is everything our Board ever dreamed of for PYC, a dream that began more than 13 years ago. A small reminder: Please wear a cover-up and shoes if you come into our Club (kids too). Don’t forget. You can’t be dripping wet. We would like to maintain our new carpet as long as possible. I hope that you were able to join us for our second Seafood Fest on Friday, August 9th. It sold out, with us serving right at 140 members. I ate frog legs for the first time! Who knew? They really do taste like chicken! Chef Artie never disappoints and the entertainment was fantastic (Photos, Page 9). Upcoming is our Labor Day Celebration. We will have waterslides for the kids, a cornhole for the older ones and a free Americana Buffet. Be sure to make reservations! It’s a good day to be a PYC member. Again, don’t forget to your calendar for October 18th. We are having a Ladies Dinner Dance. It is so named for a long- time tradition that Commodore’s spouse would organize the dance with a theme to raise money for a selected project. Imagine my husband’s surprise when he realized it was all on him! Ha! Thank you to Karen Allen and Ruth Smith for helping Chris plan what should be a great evening with friends. It will be a casino-themed black tie event with a tent outside. Entertainment will be provided by the band “Paperchase.” We wish to thank each and every sponsor, thus far. As I write this, we anticipate adding more. This should be a great Friday night event you won’t want to miss! NOTE: This is not on Saturday, in order to avoid SEC/ACC football. Geaux Tigers! (See Ladies Dinner Dance Ad & Sponsor List on Page 10.) Lastly, I hope you have found “sunshine and salt” this summer. I have now sailed, I should say raced, in 4 regattas this summer. It is really an experience. One thing to note, for those of you who are still fighting the “I know I should learn to sail” feeling, everything “stays in the boat.” Nothing exists outside it. So, for those of you who have crazy kids (like mine), or who have hectic jobs, sailing is for you! This summer, we had the most kids in Sailing Camp ever; but - now that summer sailing is over, amazing Sailing Director César Travado has more free time for private and group lessons. When we were hunting for a sailing director, I never imagined that we would find someone who has made such a positive impact on our Club. Thank you to our team of members who found him. This summer, he has increased our Junior Campers to 265 and our Adult Summer Sailing participants to 21. Ok, one more thing. Thank you to our Fish Class sailors who competed in Mobile at the Summer Regatta. The winning skipper, Neil McMillan, presented me with a hat like those awarded to his winning crew! You will be seeing me wearing it at PYC. Again, “Sunshine and Salt!”

Protecting our youth! Jaws Night - “Shark Patrol” My new hat! Thanks, Neil! PAGE 3 | JIB SHEET Vice Commodore’s Comments Johnny Smith The new bar at poolside is now complete with the granite counter top and tile facing that matches the pool furniture. It looks great! The bar is doing a brisk business and is a great addition to the pool area. Thanks to Commodore Ferry for pushing this project through and to Greg Spitzer and his crew for building it. The permitting for the repairs to the concrete decking between the crane and south bulkhead, as well as the erosion problem at the east marina, have been finalized and a contract signed with Dale’s Marine Construction to perform the repairs. We are happy that repairs will begin soon. A new gutter system is being installed on the east-facing porch before the end of August. This will allow more of the porch to be used when its raining. The Hospitality Committee will purchase two crepe myrtle trees for the driveway area in honor of Ann Owczarczak. “Persistence” Update: Troendle Marine, at Pensacola Shipyard, is now performing repairs on our new Race Committee Boat “Persistence.” Delays have been caused by the unusually wet weather we’re experiencing, but we expect to have the boat in the marina and ready to enter service by mid-September. As a reminder to all members, if you have any input on the renaming of the boat, you can submit those suggestions to the Commodore, to the President of the Satori Foundation, or to any member of the Naming Committee.

PAGE 4 | JIB SHEET Rear Commodore’s Comments Tom Pace History can be a remarkable thing, you know? We can remember it, embrace it, use it to learn and build upon, or simply and silently enjoy the warm blanket of joy that it often brings. This past weekend, at a sailing race on Mobile Bay, I was able, in part, to re-live a piece of PYC history that dates back 100 years. This weekend, I raced for PYC on a FISH Boat, the legendary racing boat of the GYA that predates the vaunted , as well as our current racing sled, the . This newer FISH, a 21’ long, gaff-rigged sloop, is just like the original FISH outside the main entrance to PYC. On that same boat, back in the 1930’s, a couple of PYC kids were taught how to sail on a FISH by P/C Commodore Dave Witherill. Those kids are quite special to me; they included my dad, Tom Pace and my uncle, Dick Pace. The FISH, designed by the famous New Orleans Architect Rathbone De Buys, was the GYA racing boat used in the LIPTON CUP, held 100 years ago. Uncle Dick, himself, is now 100-years-old and, next year, he will be sailing on Pensacola Bay on a FISH, with me, aboard boat number 31 - the second youngest boat in the fleet built just 20 years ago and based on the original design. Why this is so special follows:

In that inaugural Lipton Cup, Southern Yacht Club, in New Orleans, was matched against our PYC. Captain Dave won that event for PYC with the grandfather of legendary sailors Neil and Alan McMillan. That same Captain Dave taught my uncle Dick how to sail the FISH, and we will race that 100-Year Celebration Regatta next July in New Orleans … PYC will field a team of our fastest FISH boats and crews, with my 100-yr-old uncle as a part of the team. With the exceptional abilities of all the current FISH racers, the McMillan’s, David Johnson and Denny Blume (if we can get him to join PYC), we will once again enter the race course against Southern Yacht Club - if I can get good enough! MEMBERSHIP REPORT: Now, on to some amazing news … we have just become able to add new members from our waiting list. We had a few members reach the end of many years of enjoyment of PYC, but as they have resigned, we now have those who are eager to become members of the Club. Your Membership Committee further asked the Board not to count 6 members against our self-imposed cap of 725. These are the annual Honorary Memberships bestowed by a sitting Commodore. These membership slots are usually granted to our Florida Senator, Mayor, and others who, not only do not use the Club, but are never dues paying members. We realized that we could use those 6 spots, which we had been counting as part of our Active Membership, to give those spots real life with new and eager PYC members. So, for this month, we will add 10 “newbies” to the Club!! We now remain full at 725 members, and our waiting list continues to grow. Every month, your Membership Committee will evaluate all prospective members and get in as many as we can under the cap. The great opportunities we have with a full and vibrant membership continues. Thanks to everyone associated with PYC. Our Club is simply a great place to be, and it remains the fantastic Yacht Club it has been for so long! I am encouraged and grateful to be able to walk though our Club to see the old historic photos, to remember that our building is over 100-years-old, our FISH fleet is growing again to compete on a 100+ year design, and that our 100-year-old FISH sailor, Dick Pace, will once again sail a design he learned to sail as a kid nearly 90 years ago. We have a rich and wonderful history at PYC … and across many different aspects. How lucky are WE! ALOHA, Tom

Pretty happy with 3rd Place! Wait until Stuart McMillan and I racing my new FISH, next year! My new FISH “Black Tip” #31, the same sloop that Dick Pace will sail next year. PAGE 5 | JIB SHEET PAGE 6 | JIB SHEET T R I B U T E S Happy Birthday, Mr. Pace! On Thursday, August 22nd, 2019 Mr. Dick Pace celebrated his 100th Birthday. Family and friends gathered in the Club Ballroom to celebrate this milestone in life. The celebration included a Proclamation read by County Commissioner Robert Bender, as well as a special Aviation Award presented by Mr. Roy Kinsey, recognizing Mr. Pace’s WWII service as a fighter plot. Dick Pace is only one of two veterans to have flown as a part of every Honor Flight at the Blue Angels Beach Shows. Mr. Pace has been a steadfast Club member for 73 years. All of us at PYC wish you a Happy 100th Birthday, Mr. Pace! Carry on, Sir

Dick and Jane Pace A very special cake for “Dick, Old Dad, & Dear Da”

Congratulations, Larry C. Boyer! The Pensacola Yacht Club is grateful to P/C Larry Boyer for his professional engineering work in the creation of our “new” East Marina. He designed, obtained all construction permits, and coordinated the construction of the marina. We now have the most protected and most functional marina we could possibly desire. We are one of only 3 GYA marinas with floating docks! Thank you, Commodore Boyer, for your generous and professional contributions. You saved our Club more than $100,000 by donating your time and expertise and helped us remain “The South’s Finest Yacht Club!” . . . And.....to Larry’s Bride, Anne-Marie Boyer, thanks for letting us have his time! Larry & Ann-Marie, upon winning the 2017 Yachtsman of the Year Award

Welcome Back! Bring on the Music PYC is happy to welcome back our dear, old piano. It has brought music to our lives for many years, and will continue to do so for many years to come. Come and play a tune or take a listen. Nothing beats NOSTALGIA!

PAGE 7 | JIB SHEET Ship’s Log Dave Hoffman “Venus” In July we began exhibiting historical items from the Pensacola Yacht Club archives. The Commodore and I encourage you to take time to examine this display and gain an appreciation of our maritime heritage. During the next few months I will feature a few of the stunning yachts owned by PYC members.

On display in September will be a photo of the sailboat “Venus.” She was a wooden Alden 42 schooner purchased and restored by Club Member Bill Broughton in the early 1950s. With all her sails up, she was a beautiful vessel and commanded everyone’s attention when sailing on the bay. Bill’s interest in maritime history also led him and Chuck Smith to establish the Heritage Room that houses many of our archives.

For some fun stories relating to “Venus,” you can buy Past Commodore Charles Brooks a beer at the bar and then prepare to be entertained.

PAGE 11 | JIB SHEET Fleet Captain’s Report Hal Smith EXCITING TIMES

These are exciting times for PYC. Over a year ago, we set an ambitious goal of being recognized nationally as a premiere sailing destination for the highest level of competitive and developmental events. Since then, we hosted the most successful USODA National Championship in over 10 years (their assessment), a Kona Windsurfing North American Championship, Flying Scot North American Championship, two very successful Junior Olympics, and more. The New York Yacht Club campaign to compete for the next America’s Cup, “American Magic,” reversed earlier venue intentions and picked Pensacola for their winter training location. That we are now being presented with many impressive opportunities, proves that we have achieved our goal much sooner than we could have expected. We are considering each situation with several criteria: 1. Does it advance PYC’s reputation as a respected national yacht club? 2. Does it fit with the character and style for the reputation we seek? 3. Is PYC capable of executing the event with exceptional skill for outstanding results? 4. Will the event elevate the pride and value of PYC membership, as well as be entertaining? 5. Can PYC make a reasonable profit? Some prestigious world-level events have approached us, and we have politely turned them down because they didn’t fare well when examined per the above considerations. It is terrific to be in the position to be selective. We are very supportive of Junior Education and Adult Engagement and Development. If an event we host inspires our membership to participate more and improve their skills, it is a big win and one of the objectives for PYC. Positive results are happening “at home.” Read the Fish Class article below. We had no active Fish last year, and now we have four. PYC had 3 of the 7 Fish Boats at a recent regatta. Our teams are determined to repeat history next year at the Lipton Cup and beat Southern Yacht Club in the Fish Class during the Centennial Regatta. Our Capdevielle (Viper) teams have increased over 100% since last year. Our Vipers are being updated for competitiveness, and teams will be competing internally to earn the privilege of representing PYC at Capdevielle Regattas. Better results will follow as things are already improving. A lot more people are having a lot of fun. Can you qualify? Be looking for pending announcements of some very special sailing events and programs that did well in our evaluation process and that we hope will come to PYC. Some involve a partnership with the City of Pensacola, which has a great relationship with PYC. The city recognizes the value to the image of Pensacola that PYC brings to the rest of the USA, and they are eager to assist PYC as we broaden our impact with the community. Boating is the heart and soul of a “yacht” club, and Pensacola is one of the best places anywhere to go boating and especially sailing. If you are not already one of the many PYC members who are active in one of the many facets of PYC boating, join in. A lot of fun and satisfaction await – ask Commodore Ferry.

GIL HACKEL UPDATE! As everyone knows by now, Gil Hackel recently retuned from Antigua, where he was a part of the highly successful US Team Racing Team. He then proceeded to take total control of the entire Dinghy Fleet in Detroit, Michigan and excelled at the CORK Regatta in Kingston, Canada. Gil’s sailing schedule is truly international, as he will be in Germany next! I think this may only be the beginning for Gil’s exciting achievements! (For more details, see the Junior Sailing Article on Page 15.)

OUR FISH BOAT FLEET IS GROWING: Tom Pace added to our Fish Boat fleet by buying one of the last boats built from fiberglass. The Black Tip is said to be one of the fastest. This combines with Neil McMillan’s recently restored classic Fish Boat and DJ Johnson and Hunter Riddle, all sailing their refurbished Fish Boats. They are tuning against each other as preparation begins to win the 2020 Centennial Lipton Cup repeating the results of the first Lipton Cup. Summer Regatta Results (out of 7 boats): Impressive! Neil McMillan 1st place Tom Pace 3rd place DJ Johnson 5th place

We have two Vipers that are to be used for competition, not day-sailing. One of the Vipers is PYC’s, and the other belongs to the Satori Foundation. We are anxious to have multiple PYC teams competing as we used to do in the Flying Scot regattas. Sailing Director César Travado, who helps train and build competitive skills for PYC members, is a huge asset for PYC If you want to try out for Viper team-racing, please contact Hunter Riddle, Viper/Capdevielle Coordinator, (hunter@ schurrsails.com) or César ([email protected]) to get on the list and schedule some practice time. It is fun to attend, and a cheering section is welcomed!

O-N-G-O-I-N-G A-N-N-O-U-N-C-E-M-E-N-T-S SUMMER CAMP/JUNIOR-ADULT SAILING INFO: Sailing Director César Travado summarized the 2019 results to date after the recently concluded Summer Junior Camp. There was a significant net profit increase over last year. All participation categories increased with 264 total Junior Campers, 69 Next Mark (Advancing Juniors), 21 Adult Sailing Camp participants (only 2 in 2018 and none previously) for a grand total of 354 sailors receiving instruction. We believe the potential is much greater than this, and we are taking steps to add staff and boats to handle the demand. This is the second year for a full 12-Month Sailing Program that emphasizes juniors but also includes adults. Board Director Claire Rees has helped César with many of the expanded initiatives, including participation in off-site regattas, etc. This significantly adds to experience and skill development.

PAGE 13 | JIB SHEET THURSDAY EVENING RACING WON’T LAST MUCH LONGER! Much of our summer is now behind us. Summer sailing on Pensacola Bay is really special. The water is warm, and the sun stays out long enough to enjoy a couple of hours of sailing in perfect breezes. We meet on the beach with your favorite launchable boat, and we sail around the channel markers Be ready to start at 5:30 pm. Juniors and adults will be competing in your own //etc., or check with Sailing Director César, to determine if a Club boat is available. Afterwards, we gather for hamburgers and beer/soda for only $0.00/person. That is not a mistake! The food is FREE for those who sail and help, but the fellowship is priceless. Thanks to PYC Secretary Steven Orr, for donating the food for us. We have been enjoying a great start to this year. JOIN THE RACE COMMITTEE FUN! We have several different regattas scheduled to make 2019 an exciting and interesting year. A great way to enjoy yachting at PYC is to participate on a race committee. NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. It even includes the famous “Free Lunch!” Contact our Race Committee Chairman Bob Madden: [email protected]. He will connect you with the perfect regatta and position for you.

A SPECIAL RC OPPORTUNITY IS TO BE A REGATTA CHAIRPERSON Most people naturally know how to party, and this is a great way to be that PARTY PERSON. The chair will promote the regatta while planning a special and fun event. The Race Committee will, of course, be completely managed by the RC Chairs, and Sally Smith will get the trophies. The NOR’s and SI’s are already written. This is fun and gets you involved with the exciting part of the Club. Ask the Fleet Captain for details and opportunities. ADULTS INTERESTED IN LEARNING TO SAIL Our new RS Ventures are rigged and ready to go. They are fantastic boats for adults who are learning to sail. They are fun and responsive, but also stable and safe. There will be opportunities for (C420’s, Lasers, Sunfish, windsurfing) as well as larger keelboats such as Satori’s Tartan 28, “Second Wind.” If you have been thinking about this, it is time to act. Get in line. César will happily teach you the skills needed for loving sailing for the rest of your life. Rates vary. 2019 OFFSHORE RACE/RENDEZVOUS REGATTA PYC will host a domestic offshore race/rally to start November 1 from Pensacola YC to St. Petersburg YC. There will be sailboat monohull and fleets. Within each fleet, there will be a racing and a cruising division determined by the number of registrations. In addition, there will be a “Predicted Log” Event for powerboats. Power Boaters, this is your chance to participate in the special fun and adventure enjoyed by the sailors who annually migrate to foreign shores. This time there is no need for getting out your passports, getting visas, or registering with the US Coast Guard. The legal work is much simpler going to another domestic port. Members are even encouraged to drive to the gathering party in St. Pete, which is something not possible in Cuba or Isla Mujeres. Watch for an NOR to be posted soon on our PYC website. PAGE 14 | JIB SHEET PYC Junior Sailing Claire Rees A busy summer of sailing, learning and having fun has come to an end, school is back in session, and we have begun our Year-Round Junior Program practices. César has created a well-rounded travel schedule for those sailors who are ready to travel to regattas at other yacht clubs. Our first regatta of the season will be Wadewitz at Fairhope YC in September.

We are excited that some of our Summer Sailing participants have joined our Year-Round Program and that many of our regular sailors are improving, expanding their skills and confidence levels. We will continue to have regularly scheduled weekend practices. The program continues to grow, and we are making adjustments as needed to keep up with the Program needs.

As our Fleet Captain’s words reveal, we are very proud of our International Junior Sailor Gil Hackel. He killed Detroit, Michigan, and, at the CORK Regatta, in Kingston, Canada, just to name a few. He is doing a great job of representing our Club and the USA in these national and international sailing events. If you see Gil or his parents around the Club, please congratulate them! Claire PAGE 15 | JIB SHEET Cruiser’s Corner Jim & Linda Oyler Sometimes you just have to drop back, punt, and go with Plan B. The August raft up was one of those times. Due to boat issues and family obligations we found ourselves without hosts for the weekend. A quick survey showed several boats were ready for a raft up, so we made it happen. Tom Pace made a plea to Club Manager Jim Warwick, for supplies to be taken to Fort McRee Saturday afternoon and he agreed. Saturday afternoon was spent visiting on various boats and watching the thunderstorms come and go all around the anchorage. Yes, one finally rained itself out right on top of us. It was quite interesting to watch everyone scurry for cover. After the rain was over, the sky cleared and everyone came out to play once more. When we woke on Sunday morning the sun was shining brightly, the seas were calm, and there was a gentle northerly breeze. “Alafair” pulled up her anchor and joined “Parlay” to make a bigger platform for brunch. People joined us from 8 different boats for the Mimosa/Bloody Mary brunch. Thanks to everyone who made this raft up happen and a big “THANK YOU!” to Jim Warwick and Greg Spitzer for bringing our libations. The party must have been good because it seemed no one wanted to leave until we saw the afternoon thunderstorms starting to develop. Yep! We waited just a little bit too late to leave. About halfway back, the bottom dropped out of the heavy clouds and it rained and rained and rained. There was no lightening and no wind but it rained so hard that Grand Lagoon disappeared, then Pensacola disappeared, and then Gulf Breeze disappeared. Several boats simply meandered around in the rain until visibility returned and we could safely make it back into the channel and into our slips. The jellyfish were as interesting to watch as the clouds were this weekend. We did not see one single jellyfish on Saturday. Sunday morning they were there by the hundreds. Some were as big as 18 inches in diameter and so plentiful they looked like stepping- stones. They always look so pink and beautiful, gracefully making their way through the water. Why do they have to cause such pain? And, for goodness sakes, don’t ever get one sucked into your generator or air conditioner intake. The next raft up is scheduled for September 14 & 15. Ruth & Johnny Smith, and Joanne & Ron Bruce will be co-hosting this event for Bob Kriegel, who has a family obligation out of town that weekend. The destination is still undetermined, but I’m sure the Smith’s and the Bruce’s will make this a great raft up. There is a full moon that weekend and that can only add to the fun. Watch FaceBook and your email for details. See you on the water or around “The South’s Finest Yacht Club.”

PAGE 17 | JIB SHEET Do You Ride? Bob Kriegel Steve Harp, Darrel Harrison, Bob Kriegel, Ian McKinnon, Alan McMillian, Jim Oyler and Johnny Smith met at PYC Sunday morning, July 28th, for a pleasant “luncheon” ride to My Cousin Vinnys in Daphne, Alabama. The weather was wonderful, we took the scenic route over, and the food and “cheap beer” were great. We stopped at Ollies on 9 Mile Road on the way back for a little more tour time – and libations, of course. A great day!

July Distance Ride During the month of July, P/C Susan and Ian McKinnon joined a group of motorcyclists to ride out West. Starting in Bozeman, MT, they traveled to Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons. They stopped for herds of bison crossing the roads and observed antelope and a baby grizzly in the wild. Crossing the Continental Divide three times and reaching elevations of over 10,000 feet on Bearfoot Pass, the scenery was incredibly beautiful with low temps, majestic mountains, and snow on the ground. What a great way to beat the summer heat!!! Riding west into Idaho, they motored through the Craters of the Moon National Park, as well as the Sawtooth, Payette and Nez-Perce National Forests. Leaving Idaho and crossing the LoLo Pass into Montana, they landed in Missoula before making their way back to Bozeman. (Note: The Lolo Pass was the route Lewis and Clark traveled as they were westbound for the Pacific.) Over seven days, Ian, Susan and the group traveled 1,670 miles.

8/3-4 SOB Ride Bob Kriegel and Johnny Smith rode to Tuscumbia, NW Alabama to meet Steve Harp – who just left “the dark side” – trading in his BMW road bike for a new Harley Davidson Ultra Limited – a great bike, with a great engine, with a built in suitcase on the back. Steve got a great last day-of-the-month deal in Nashville; He rode up there, put his first thousand miles on the bike Thursday and Friday, had it serviced Saturday, and met us in Tuscumbia! As with boats, any day on a bike is better than – something (?), but - the weather riding to Tuscumbia up was dismal – hot with frequent thunderstorms. We went to the Rattlesnake Saloon for dinner and libations. The saloon is actually located in a cavern on a several thousand acre ranch! The entertainment was good, the food, mostly great (but impacting) - “snake eyes” (fried jalapeno chips) and hamburgers with draft Chinese beer (“Ying-a-Ling”) to help out. Paul Bruno, Susan McKinnon, and Alan McMillan took a more leisurely ride that Sunday – to Hub Stacy’s at Innerarity Point for great chicken wings and more of that draft Chinese beer.

SOB Planning Meeting • Gary Folse, Steve Harp, Bob Kriegel, Susan McKinnon, Alan McMillan, Jim Oyler, and Johnny Smith met August 6, 2019 at PYC to discuss SOB plans for the second half of the year. • Bob Kriegel was conscripted as the Grand Poobah, mostly a result of a “police action” engineered by Marco Stolfi! • We agreed to generally continue as we have in the past, encouraging impromptu rides with notice thru our mailing list, and periodic scheduled day and distance rides with ride coordinators. Let me know of any needed changes to the mailing list.

PAGE 18 | JIB SHEET SCHEDULED RIDES: September 10 – 12 (Tues. - Thurs.) North Georgia. Steve Harp will coordinate working with Alan. The Streckels, McMillans, Barbara Wade/Dave Norfleet, and Marco Stolfi have planned a trip, with nearby cottages are available. Let Steve know if you are interested. October 25 – 25 (Fri. - Sat.) Thunder Beach Rally in Panama City. Alan McMillan will coordinate, and he has already reserved four rooms at the La Quinta ($130/nite). Let Alan know if you are interested.

November 6 (Wed.) Day ride starting from PYC. Susan McKinnon will coordinate. Tentatively, the ride will be down the beach to the East River Smoke House in Navarre for lunch, and return the scenic northern route.

November 23 (Sat.) Barbara Wade and Dave Norfleet will coordinate a day ride – destination to be determined!

December 28 (Sat.) Last-Ride-of-the-Year, to Stockton, Alabama, day ride starting from Bob Kriegel’s, Bob will coordinate. A discussion is ongoing about rides next Spring – to include the Natchez Trace, a distance ride possibly to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and/or Thunder Beach or Daytona.

And, lastly, “Life is Good!” Bob K
