Exploring 's Regions

Spain is the world's third largest producer of wine but has the largest land area (over 2.4 million acres) dedicated to . The diversity of wine produced is vast, from value driven, everyday sippers to collectible rarities! And, unlike and Italy, Spain equally produces in both new-world and old-world styles. There are 138 official wine region designations in Spain as of 2020. The regions are incredibly diverse and produce everything from crisp whites to deep, dark reds. We invite you to experience selections from a few of our favorite regions!

Jumilla The Jumilla viticultural area is considered to be Murcia's most important in terms of quantity and quality. It is also the region's oldest, established in 1966. Like other wine regions of the area, Jumilla specializes in wines based on the Monastrell variety, which accounts for around 80 percent of vines with much of the rest devoted to . It is well suited to the harsh conditions here, and the best wines demonstrate a varied flavor profile. This includes lively fruits and earth and mineral notes when young, developing into complex aromas of matured fruit, coffee and spices with extended barrel aging.

Gota de Arena Tempranillo, 2018 $7 glass $24 bottle

Deep purple in color, the aromatics erupt from the glass featuring a mix of crushed red and black fruits and sweet spice tinged with oak. "The depth of flavor is impressive, as is the crisp tannin." -James Suckling-

Juan Gil Monastrell, 2017 $10.50 glass $42 bottle

Juan Gil stands out for its intense red colors, fruity aromas and the spicy tannin and flavor that is given by aging in French Oak. Considered one of the best wines produced in the region, it is a Barcelona favorite.

Calatayud Calatayud was first introduced and championed by importer and producer Jorge Ordonez. Following his example, many other importers and producers have founded and created blends in this region for the U.S. market. As a result, Calatayud has perhaps become Spain's treasure trove of value Garnacha based wines.

Garnacha de Fuego, 2019 $7 glass $24 bottle

Lots of ripe black cherry and plum, with licorice and roasted herbs rounding out the bouquet. It's rounded and supple on the palate, has beautiful fruit, plenty of classic character.

Atteca Old Vine Garnacha, 2016 $11 glass $45 bottle

Rich Morello cherry and plum flavors are accented by mint, orange peel and sassafras notes in this expressive red, which has soft tannins, juicy acidity and a smoky finish.

Navarra The Navarra region lies between La and the French border, with the to the north, and the river running up from the south. It gained notoriety for its juicy, Garnacha-based rosados, but it also known for and Garnacha, and its white wines from , Viura and Garnacha Blanca are making an international splash.

Vega Sindoa Cabernet Sauvignon, 2017 $9.50 glass $38 bottle

Fruit driven with a full body, round and ripe tannins, and a straightforward finish that has incredible balance and softness. It displays great clarity and a floral lift on a long smooth finish.

Vega Sindoa Chardonnay, 2018 $9.50 glass $38 bottle

The creamy texture of this toasty white is a dead ringer for well made California Chardonnay. With ample fruit supported by French Oak, it is incredibly balanced and underscored with notes of Vanilla.

Alicante Alicante is a fairly small wine region, but has a lot to offer the wine lover! It's named for the town on the coast, and is clearly influenced by the temperate Mediterranean climate. Red wines from this region have become some of Spain's most sought after top scoring wines!

Juntos , 2018 $7 glass $24 bottle

Juntos is one of the region's only wines made entirely from Merlot. It bears more of a resemblance to Old World Bordeaux than to California Merlot, with heightened acidity and earth supporting the dark fruit.

Paso a Paso Tinto, 2018 $7 glass $24 bottle

Made of 100% Tempranillo from vineyards planted in 1970, the wine has a fresh and fruity nose, alongside a spicy background accented with cedar.

The history of is varied but it has its humble beginnings in Spain. The word sangria comes from the Spanish word “sangre”, which means blood. Sangria is a wine punch typically made with , fresh tropical fruits, a sweetener and added alcoholic spirits served over ice. This concoction has grown to become a popular, refreshing party drink around the world. Every restaurant has its own recipe and everyone that makes it at home has their own opinions about what should be added to Sangria.

The variations on the basic sangria recipe are only limited by what you want to add and what you enjoy. Although typically made from red wine, can also be used and then it is called ‘Sangria Blanco’. The producing region of Spain added its own variation to sangria by adding their , Cava. In the south of Spain, zurra is sangria created with peaches or nectarines. Because of the variations in recipes, sangria’s alcoholic content can vary greatly.
