Although the Recoltant Manipulant, or Grower Producer category, still only accounts for less than 5% of purchased Champagne, the wines are gaining recognition as some of the most terroir driven expressions the Champagne region has to offer. Unlike most larger Houses which purchase a vast amount of their grapes, the Recoltant may only use 100% estate grown and family owned grapes and all the production must be done on the grower’s property. At the pinnacle of these extraordinary wines is a group of 27 vignerons who have committed themselves to crafting Champagne of intense complexity and unparalleled standards. The wines are tasted twice before the second fermentation that creates the bubbles and after, and the wine must be in the bottle for a minimum of 3 years. Only after the aging is the wine judged the final time by a jury of peers to decide if the resulting sparkler is worthy of the Special Club designation. One of the most rigourous and exacting groups of winemakers in the world, these bottlings are worth seeking out whenever possible.
