Building Energy Technologist or Engineer (EIT)

Summary:

The Building Science Energy Technologist or EIT’s role includes a wide range of tasks such as building energy modelling, building enclosure energy assessments, energy benchmarking, thermal modelling, airtightness testing, durability and sustainability related work, and other design, research, and testing work, under the direction of senior technical staff and project managers.

Education, Experience and Professional Designations:

 Diploma in Building Enclosure Engineering Technology, Technology, or equivalent, with courses related to building science and/or energy efficiency

 Bachelor of Applied Science or Engineering with courses related to building science and/or energy efficiency

 1 or 2 years previous related experience an asset

 ASTTBC certification an asset

Skills and Competencies:

 Excellent understanding of building science, , and fundamentals

 Strong interest in energy efficiency, durability, and green building design; experience with LEED and Passive programs is an asset

 Knowledge of thermal simulation software including THERM, WINDOW, and HEAT3 is an asset

 Knowledge of energy modelling software such as HOT2000, eQuest, DesignBuilder, OpenStudio, EnergyPlus, and/or PHPP is an asset

 Knowledge of green building and energy efficient building market transformation, including economics, policy and market demand is an asset

 Advanced Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and Excel skills

 Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills

 Excellent organization skills

 Excellent ability to communicate with clients, trades, employees, project managers, and management both verbally and in written format

 Good ability to shift focus between changing priorities Typical Tasks:

 Perform whole building energy modelling, prepare reports documenting analysis and results with the support of a senior engineer.

 Perform building enclosure energy code compliance assessments including quantity take-offs and thermal calculations for building enclosure components.

 Work with building owners, managers and utilities to collect energy consumption billing data; benchmark building energy performance using ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, ASHRAE Building Energy Quotient and/or other rating systems.

 Perform energy efficiency assessments (ASHRAE Level 1,2,3 and Power Smart Energy Study) of existing buildings, identify areas to reduce energy consumption, complete energy savings estimates and cost-payback analyses.

 Perform thermal (HEAT3, THERM, and WINDOW) analyses and prepare reports documenting analysis and results with the support of a senior engineer.

 Perform market studies including costing and financial analyses to support energy conservation policy work and guideline development.

 Support LEED Durability Credit implementation and documentation.

 Prepare reports and papers to clearly and accurately illustrate findings and recommendations.

 Assist with other aspects of building science research, new construction, and existing buildings work as needed.
