PRIME MINISTER AND LOK SABHA SPEAKER LEAD PARLIAMENTARIANS IN PAYING TRIBUTES TO MAHATMA GANDHI AND SHRI LAL BAHADUR SHASTRI
New Delhi, 2 October 2017: Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Smt. Sumitra Mahajan led the parliamentarians in paying floral tributes at the portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri in the Central Hall of Parliament House today on the occasion of their birth anniversaries.
Among others who paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri were Union Minister of Home Affairs Shri Raj Nath Singh; Union Minister of Science & Technology, Earth Sciences and Environment, Forests & Climate Change Dr. Harsh Vardhan; Union Minister of Human Resource Development Shri Prakash Javadekar; Leader of Opposition (Rajya Sabha) Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad; Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker Dr. M. Thambi Durai; several Ministers of State; former Deputy Prime Minister and Chairperson, Ethics Committee (Lok Sabha) Shri L. K. Advani; Members of Parliament and former Members of Parliament. The family members of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri also joined the dignitaries in paying tributes to the leaders.
The Secretary-General of Lok Sabha Shri Anoop Mishra also paid floral tributes on the occasion.
The portrait of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled in the Central Hall on 28 August 1947 by the President of the Constituent Assembly of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad, while the portrait of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri was unveiled on 2 October 1993 by the then President of India, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma.
