D OCTOR OF H UM ANE L EITERS JAYNE BAKER SPAIN Vice Chairman) United States Civil Service Commission Citation: Jayne Baker Spain, ind ustrialist, humanitarian, and p ublic servant, your career i eloquent proof that women can and must play a vital role in business, social service, and CTovemment. For twenty years, you headed your own company, Alvey-Ferguson of Cincinatti, Ohio, an in­ ternationally known manufacturer of conveyor and unit handling eq uipm nt. Four years after its merger with Litton Industries, you became a director of the parent corporation. a tribute to yOUT business acumen and your value as an advisor in the high councils of American indus­ try. Your deep concern for the rehabilitation, training, and employment of the physically handicapped, and your splendid record of placing these individuals in worthwhile occupations, cau ed President Johnson to name you to the President's Committee on the Employment of the Handicapped in 1966 and President NL"{on to reappoint you in 1969. You are presently serving as Vice Chairman of that Committee. having demonstr ted in your own business and in others that handicapped persons properly trained and properly placed are not occupationally handicapped, and if given an equal opportunity will prove to be successful. and often superior, employees. On June 14. 1971, after nomination by the President and confirmation by the Sen­ ate, YOll became a member of the United States Civil Service Commission, the sixth woman in the Commission's eighty-eight year history, and you were also designated as Vice Chairman by the President. Cohn, businessman and ci vic leader, ou began your career at an early age in the corporation of which you are now chief executive officer. While still a student. you joined the Continental Coffee Company as a summer employee, a fortuitous circumstance which aided you in gaining a thorough knowledge of various aspects of the company. Upon completion of your studies at DePaul University, you entered full-time management in 1940. These thirty­ two years have been interrupted by ervice in World War II, during which you were on active duty in the Philippines rising from the rank of private to first lieutenant. After having served as Vice President, President, and Vice Chairman of the Board, you succeeded your late father, Jacob Cohn, the fo under of Continental Coffee. as Chairman of the Board. An outstanding success in business, you have not neglected the charitable and civic needs of your community, serving on the Boards of the Better Government Association of Chicago , the Chicago Conven­ tion and Tourism Bureau, the Michael Reese H ospital, and the Jewish Welfare Fund. DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS FREDERICK CLINT ON WILLIAMSON Director; Department of Community Affairs, Sta te of R hode Island Citation: Fred ick Clin ton William on, public official. pokesman for human decency. and leader in the service of the uDderprivile~d. long before the movement for civil rights and racial equality became fashionable in political and social circles, you were in the vanguard, pointing the way, goading the conscience of your fellow citizen . and proving by your life and worb that minOTity group per on could attain d.istinction in their chosen fields of endeavor. For twenty-seven years you were employed in positions of civilian management with the Depart­ ment of the Navy. You were a member of the Grievance Advisor y Board of the Quonset Naval Air Station and. for a time, Chairman of the Executive Board of th e American Federation of Government Employees, AFL-CIO. In 1954 ou received the second highest civilian award, the Navy's Meritoriolls Civilian Service Award. plus several other awards of merit during ) 'OUT Navy civilian career. You are a past President of the Urban L ague of Rhode Island, a former member of the Board of DirectOTs of the Providence Branch of the NAACP, former Chairman of the Rhode Island Committee ou Discrimination in Housing, and former Vice Chairman of Citizens United for Fair Housin . As teacher, Dean of the School of Business Administration, Dean of the College, and as Acting President from 1969 to 1970, the excellence of your work has been exceeded only by your devotion to duty and your willingness to place the welfare of the College and its students above your own personal interests. Time and time again, you have generously given the full measure of loyalty and dedication to Bryant College and its mission of educating young men and women for successful careers in business. Despite the many demands on your time, you have still been able to contribute to the betterment of your profession and community.
