2013 Spring Meeting Largest Ever By Joe Bocchino, Bocchino Consulting

This year’s edition of the Post’s Annual Scholarship Gala was jam packed. The night-time affair on Tuesday, 7 May drew 360 members, guests, students, family & friends, and featured a Wounded Warrior, “Norbie” Lara, SFC USA (ret) as the keynote speaker. Eighteen very deserving college undergraduates in local universities & colleges on “STEM” career paths received $57,000 in scholarships. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math oriented curriculums are requisites of the Post scholarship program. Post officers for 2013 / 2014 were installed by new Regional Vice President and National Fellow John Gerstenlauer of Perini, passing the torch onto the next administration without violent reprisal or begrudging attitude. Remarkable; and testimony to what SAME and this country are all about.

And what SAME and this country is all about is embodied in the 2013 recipients of the S. Peter Volpe awards. The 53rd Spring Meeting was the first without S. Peter Volpe who helped establish the fantastically successful Scholarship Program. In memory of his Dad, Peter J. Volpe – a Post Past President himself – was the Emeritus recipient. The “Active Member” award was presented to Dave Heislein of AMEC for his tireless work on the Regional Conference Committee and the Outreach Committee (to Middle & High Schools). This space is not nearly big enough to describe the value Dave adds to Post good deeds.

Chaired by Mark Anderson (Jr.) of USACE New England – the event was executed without flaw. Monthly meetings were well run despite Mark being literally pregnant the nine preceding months and giving birth just prior to the blessed event … the Post’s that is. As reported in the Bugle, Mark became a brand new father and did not skip a beat while herding the cats of the Spring Meeting Committee. The Westin in Waltham served the Post and our guests well with the usual suspects closing the bar networking and working the “society” part of SAME. There was even a siting of Dr. Bob Wolff, SAME National Executive Director. We welcomed his participation and shared our perspectives over après Spring Meeting cocktails.

All involved are to be congratulated for their hard work. The Boston Post Scholarship Program was way ahead of its time, and stands second only to NYC Post. Hundreds and hundreds of students in these 53 years of our Scholarship Program have been awarded what is now approaching $2 Million. The Post was supporting our next generation of scientist and engineer well before it became necessary and fashionable. This year’s committee pulled together the myriad of puzzle pieces superbly and carried on the legacy of what is the culmination of the Boston Post year. I am sure next year, the 54th Spring Meeting will be no different. Essayons.
