The Souvenir of 1S96 represents a Legislature that was called to deal with more iniportant questions than usual, and that had unusual experiences to meet. Never before in the memory of this generation, has a whole state been called upon to mourn for its chief executive, removed by death from his high office. The lamented Greenhalge, called away while in the midst of the work to which he was giving his best thoughts and noblest endeavors, was mourned sincerely by the whole state because he has been in the best sense the Governor of the whole state. The great question of better transportation facilities, which culminated in the Southern Union passenger station bill: and the Pipe Line bill, by which it was proposed to give the people of the state cheaper gas for fuel and illumination, were bills which, of themselves, would have justified the claim for a great public work accomplished. This was the Legislature also which sent to the people for judg- ment the resolve for biennial elections of members of the state government; and it also passed a bill fixing for the next ten years the lines for councillor and sen atorial districts, and allotted the number of representatives to each county for the same period. It abolished the days of grace on notes; appropriated $450.- coo for finishing and furnishing parts of the new State House; and $375,000 for the "preservation"of the '-Bulfinch front" of the old State House. It sent no committee on a"junketing" trip outside the state. And many other notable things it did, but spaci forbids their enumeration here. The following pages show you the portraits, give their biographical sketches, and show the autographs of the men in Senate, House and Executive Council, who helped do this great work; as well as the members of the Xitional Legislature that represent the old Bay State in either branch. None but a man of grand proportions could have emerged into prominence to stand with them. Webster, Choate, Story, Benjamin R. Curtis, Jeremiah Mason, the Hoars, Dana, Otis, and Caleb Cushing were among them. Of the lives and careers of all of these, full and adequate records have been written.     TRURO LOG AUGUST 2012 TRURO COUNCIL ON AGING WWW.TRURO-MA.GOV/COA William “Bill” Worthington explained to me the reason that he volunteers is because of the example of his parents. In the 60’s his father inherited some money and with it he built the Pamet Harbor Yacht Club and the floats. He bought a power launch, too. He and Charlie Francis also built the small house nearby. He got some boats and hired someone to teach sailing. Harriet Hobbs was one of the first students. Bill remembers that they tied knots on rainy days. In the 80’s Ansel Chaplin and Charles Davidson created the Conservation Trust and Bill’s mother was on the Board. Both parents also volunteered in Connecticut. William Worthington Almost as soon as Bill moved out here in 2001, Ansel Senior of the Year Chaplin suggested that he join the Planning Board. He was Chair for a little while and is still on the Board. He is newly on the Provincetown Water and Sewer Board which because of the new North Unionfield well site, requires 3 members INSIDE THIS ISSUE from Truro. Truro has leased this well site - Provincetown does not Senior Citizen of the Year own it which is a different set-up from the other Truro well sites. Bill is also on the Truro Water Resources Oversight Committee. Beyond Store Bought: They are working on a comprehensive water management plan Eco-Chic Gift Wrapping concerning nitrate intrusion. Bill is on the Energy Committee, and for a while he was Truro’s Live Your Life Well representative to the Cape Light Compact.

The Editor of the Souvenir has had occasion to remark in previous editions that each Legislature has some peculiar characteristic to distinguish it from all others It fell to the lot of the Legislature of 1898, for the first time in over 30 years, or the usuil span of a generation, to make war preparations and to discuss war measures. The breaking out of the war with Spain found our Legislature rjady to do its part promptly and patriotically. With absolute unanimity and no more delay than was necessary for the making of the proper motions and the sig- nature of the bill by Governor Wolcott, the whole transaction occupying less than half an hour, the war appropriation of half a million dollars was voted ; and in the Senate the enactment of the measure was greeted with three cheers. No partisan discussion but patriotic action marked every measure of similar import. But this Souvenir is not intended as a record of what was done.

    APPENDIX I LUNAR AND MARTIAN NOMENCLATURE LUNAR AND MARTIAN NOMENCLATURE A large number of names of craters and other features on the Moon and Mars, were accepted by the IAU General Assemblies X (Moscow, 1958), XI (Berkeley, 1961), XII (Hamburg, 1964), XIV (Brighton, 1970), and XV (Sydney, 1973). The names were suggested by the appropriate IAU Commissions (16 and 17). In particular the Lunar names accepted at the XIVth and XVth General Assemblies were recommended by the 'Working Group on Lunar Nomenclature' under the Chairmanship of Dr D. H. Menzel. The Martian names were suggested by the 'Working Group on Martian Nomenclature' under the Chairmanship of Dr G. de Vaucouleurs. At the XVth General Assembly a new 'Working Group on Planetary System Nomenclature' was formed (Chairman: Dr P. M. Millman) comprising various Task Groups, one for each particular subject.
