Alleyn’s Founder’s Day 29 June 2019

Introduction Welcome to Alleyn’s Founder’s Day! Funds raised through the Lower School and the Alleyn’s Charity Committee stalls will be donated to the School’s charities: Sparrow Schools in South Africa and ReachOut UK. Any funds/amount raised through the Alleyn’s Parents’ Association stalls will support local charities and future School projects. This year’s Senior and Junior Schools’ joint raffle will raise funds for Link Age , a local charity which provides friendly volunteer support to older people living in Southwark. The proceeds from the Edward Alleyn Club Pimm’s Tent will go towards the Alleyn Benevolent Fund, which provides support for two Upper School students to continue their studies at Alleyn’s when financial constraints might otherwise mean they would have to leave. Alleyn’s is marking the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, by flying a flag created by artist Ai Weiwei to celebrate human rights throughout the world.

Meet the Mastiffs! (by the Pimm’s Tent) In 1604, Edward Alleyn was awarded the title of the King’s ‘Chief Master, Ruler and Overseer of his Majesty’s Games, of Bears and Bulls and Mastiff Dogs’. Later entries from the accounts of Alleyn’s College show that mastiff dogs were associated with the College as guard dogs until 1857. We are grateful to Steve and Tracey Coulman-Hole of the Mastiff Association for bringing their dogs today to represent this key aspect of Alleyn’s history.

400th Anniversary Exhibition (Quad-side of the Edward Alleyn Building) Six panels of the School’s new exhibition to mark the 400th anniversary of Alleyn’s College. See the origins of Alleyn’s School, find out more about our Founder, Edward Alleyn, and look at how , and education, has changed through time.

Pupil Co-curated Exhibition (Reception) Three exhibition cabinets containing objects from the life and times of Edward Alleyn. Year 12 students worked alongside the School Archivist and the Curator of the Cuming Museum to select, research, interpret and exhibit these 400 year-old objects. Your Guide to the Site

You may wish to visit the new Lower School garden area where there are new benches and landscaping for the children to enjoy. In the area near the front-of-school driveway and the Astroturf, we have a quiet space reserved for people to have reflective time during the day. The APA organised a collection commemorating Revd Anthony Buckley’s work at the School, so parents have kindly dedicated 6 benches for encouraging our pupils and staff to use a place where they can meet more quietly in a busy day. You will see motifs on those benches that will remind you of Anthony’s interests!
