  • Het Geding Om De Historiciteit Van Jezus: Edward Van Der Kaaij in Perspectief
BERT JAN LIETAERT PEERBOLTE Het geding om de historiciteit van Jezus: Edward van der Kaaij in perspectief THE DEBATE ON THE HISTORICITY OF JESUS: EDWARD VAN DER KAAIJ IN PERSPECTIVE Rev. Edward van der Kaaij recently published a book that treats Jesus as a mythical figure. The origin of narratives about Jesus would lie in a historicizing of this myth by the earliest Christians. Van der Kaaij thus revives the old position defended by, among others, Arthur Drews (1909), but does so without any new arguments. This contribution analyses this newly published book, with reference to similar discussions around the turn of the 20th century, and argues that Van der Kaaij’s perception is wrong: the ideas of the Dutch Radicals (the Hollandse Radicalen) were not ignored, but simply rejected on good grounds. Since there is no new evidence to take into account, there is no need to reopen the discussion.

For the Greek authors’ names and titles see Liddell & Scott (1996) and for the Latin ones Glare (1996). The Gospel texts translated into English were quoted on the basis of the King James Ver- sion of 1611. In some cases the Revised Standard Version of 1881 and the New American Bible of 1970 were relied on. These three translations often differ from each other considerably. Although they all, even the Catholic one, make use of the original languages rather than the Vulgate as a basis for translation, they have the tendency to read the text of the New Testament according to the current interpreta- tion and to amalgamate it with the Old, so that in critical points the newer transla- tions are overtly conflicting with the Greek original text, arbitrarily interpreting e. g. thalassa, properly ‘sea’, as lake, Christos, ‘Christ’, as Messiah, adapting the orthog- raphy of the proper names in the New Testament to those in the Old, e.g.

There is much potential here for approaching the Bible mythologically. The collective human unconscious does influence the story of Jesus as found in the Gospels. RobertsonG. Intheologian and author Robert M. In his most recent book, Harpur not only taps into this widespread Gnostic current, he also demonstrates that it runs far deeper than we ever imagined. Tom Harpur. Barnes was able to declare Jesus a mythical Pagan Christ: Is Blind Faith Killing Christianity?, the product of the mythmaking tendencies common to religious people of all ages, particularly the period of the early Roman Empire. It takes courage for someone with Harpur's background to promote such views. He would also differ from many modern theologians such as Jesus Seminar members John Spong and Marcus Borg, who believe there was an actual Jesus of history. A Prolegomenon to the Study of Paul by Patrick Hart A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Religious Studies University of Alberta © Patrick Hart, 2018 ABSTRACT The apostle Paul’s significance to both early Christian history and Christian theology is undisputed. Indeed, Paul is second to none but Jesus in this regard—or as Adolf Deissmann puts it, “[f]rom the broadest historical standpoint Jesus appears as the One, and Paul as the first after the One.” Yet despite the small mountain of books on Paul, there seemingly remains a persistent failure to generate a cogent and compelling understanding of his thought. Granted, this concern is decidedly more acute in Pauline scholarship than it is among everyday readers of the New Testament. But Paul’s eminence in Christian history and theology ought to dictate otherwise. Indeed, given his ubiquitous significance in Christianity, all readers of Paul would do well to reflect not only upon the multifarious Pauls that we encounter, but even more important, the various considerations that condition any understanding of him, regardless of whether one views him as an impenetrable figure. Occasioned by this concern, this study is intended to serve as a type of prolegomenon to the study of Paul. Specifically, this study examines foundational assumptions that ground each and every reading or interpretation of the famous apostle to the gentiles. Such an examination touches on several topics, invoking issues pertaining to truth, hermeneutics, canonicity, historiography, pseudonymity, literary genres, and authority. Moreover, this study is guided by an underlying thesis, namely, that every encounter with the Paul of the New Testament is conditioned by a kind of pre-understanding of Paul (or a proto-Paulusbild), which filters and interprets the Pauline data.

  • Jesus' Historicity and Sources
American Journal of Biblical Theology Volume 22(6). Feb 7, 2021 JESUS’ HISTORICITY AND SOURCES: The Misuse of Extrabiblical Sources for Jesus and a Suggestion Abstract The view that Jesus never existed is a popular one, and the debate on it has been plagued with uncritical methodologies and evaluations of the current evidence that we have for Jesus of Nazareth. In the following article, it is argued that the extrabiblical evidence for Jesus does not strictly aid in establishing that there was a person in history named Jesus, but that it does further damage the positions of Jesus Skeptics that early Christians may have believed in a purely celestial figure, as this attests to quite the opposite, a belief in a human messiah. Introduction It is a simple fact of the matter that there are numerous sources within around 150 years of his death that attest to a figure of Jesus of Nazareth in history.1 They have been frequently been invoked in the ongoing debate on whether or not Jesus was a historical person (the so-called “Christ Myth” debate) in a variety of manners, with both sides (those being historicists and Jesus Skeptics,2 called “skeptics” from here on out) usually promoting one stereotypical argument on each side. 1 For overview of these, see Craig A. Evans, “Jesus in Non-Christian Sources,” in Bruce Chilton and Craig A. Evans (eds.), Studying the Historical Jesus: Evaluations of the State of Current Research (Leiden: Brill, 1994), pp. 443-478 and Robert Van Voorst, Jesus Outside the New Testament: An Introduction to the Ancient Evidence (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2000), passim.
