At the Dialogue on October 9 and 10, participants will discuss how to mainstream disaster risk management (DRM) into country policies and programs, as well as into the operations of development agencies and programs, building on the lessons learnt from the GEJE of March 2011.

On the next day, October 11, in Hyogo, at seminar of 10-year anniversary of the Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution (DRI), high-level experts will discuss the international assistance in the case of complex-hazard disaster considering experience obtained through the GEJE and expectations for DRI. Learning from Megadisasters, a knowledge-sharing project sponsored by the World Bank and the government of Japan, is collecting and analyzing information, data, and evaluations performed by academic and research institutions, nongovernmental organizations, government agencies, and the private sector—all with the objective of sharing Japan’s knowledge on DRM and post-disaster reconstruction with countries vulnerable to disasters.

Following these two events in Sendai and Kobe, a technical workshop will be held in Kobe aimed at sharing lessons from GEJE with the world. At this technical workshop practitioners and researchers will discuss measures and activities to support developing countries in mainstreaming DRM.

Discussion topics will cover:

(i) introduce key messages and lessons from GEJE in Knowledge Notes “Learning from Mega Disaster”, (ii) explore practical activities how to use lessons in KNs to support developing countries to strengthen their DRM mechanisms, (iii) examine lessons in recovery from the GEJE, and (iv) discuss collaborative approaches with organizations in KOBE, HYOGO for these activities.
