Types of Chemical Reactions Materials: Bunsen Burner Crucible Tongs Microspatula Or Scoopula Test Tubes Test Tube Rack Types of Chemical Reactions Materials: Bunsen burner Crucible tongs Microspatula or scoopula Test tubes Test tube rack Test tube clamp Wooden splints Evaporating dish Chemicals: Zinc, Hydrochloric Acid, Copper wire, copper carbonate, copper sulfate Safety Supplies: Be sure to think carefully about all the hazards and how to keep you and your partners safe. State the precaution and the reason. For example, “Due to the use of a bunsen burner….” Procedure: 1. Prepare a solution of copper sulfate in a small beaker. Add approximately 10 mL water and 2 grams of copper sulfate; stir to dissolve. Transfer this to a test tube. Add a piece of zinc. Let this sit and react while you do the rest of the procedures. 2. Hold a piece of copper wire with crucible tongs and place it in the hottest part of the flame for 1 -2 minutes. 3. Hold a piece of magnesium in a Bunsen flame. Do NOT look directly at the flame! 4. Add enough copper (II) carbonate to a test tube so that it is about ¼ full. Using the test tube clamp, heat the copper carbonate strongly until a color change appears. Move it gently through the flame and be sure it is not pointed at anyone. Light a wooden splint, turn off the burner, and quickly insert the flaming splint into the test tube. (Keep the test tube straight up.) 5. Put a test tube in a test tube rack, and place 5 mL of 6M Hydrochloric acid into it. Add a piece of zinc. Using a test tube clamp, invert a test tube over the mouth of the reacting tube. Hold it there for 30 seconds. Then, keeping the test tube facing down, quickly insert a flaming splint into the mouth of the test tube. CAUTION: the reaction test tube may get uncomfortably hot and should produce a noise. 6. Place several drops of chemical A to a watch glass. Add several drops of B to A. Disposal: Be sure to keep your goggles on during clean up. All solids, except for the copper wire, may be placed in the trash can. The product from reaction 5 should be wiped with a paper towel and thrown away before washing the watch glass. Liquids may be washed down the drain with plenty of water. Wash all glassware and allow to dry on the drying rack. Data: Create a data table with 3 columns: reactants, reaction conditions, and products. Record concise (no sentences, just one or two descriptive words!) observations of each reactant and product throughout the lab. Note that there are 2 reactions in reaction #4. Reaction conditions are things like pressure, heat, electricity, etc. Analysis: 1. Classify each reaction and explain how you decided. Use your EVIDENCE to make your argument. 2. Write the equations for each reaction. (You can balance them if you remember how.) 3. You performed 2 tests for gases with a flaming splint. Describe the results and how they indicate the presence of the gas. 4. Which metal is more reactive, copper or magnesium? Justify your answer based on your evidence. Conclusion: Refer to the guidelines for writing conclusions. No error analysis needed. .

    Determining the Percent Composition and Formula of a Copper Chloride Hydrate Overview: The mass percents of Cu, Cl and H2O in a compound are determined by separating and massing the three components. A major emphasis of laboratory work for a chemist is determining the composition of a compound. There are many tools (such as, chromatographic separation and spectroscopy) available to aid the chemist in determining chemical composition. As you study chemistry at Wofford you will be exposed to many of these analysis techniques. In this lab you will become familiar with the techniques of sample heating, vacuum filtration, and the proper handling of strong acids. We will start with a copper chloride hydrate of unknown composition (CuxCly • z H2O). We will sequentially separate the components of water and copper, leaving behind a solution of chloride ions. The water will be removed by heating. Hydrated salts quickly lose their waters of hydration during heating. Reweighing the sample after heating will reveal the mass of anhydrous (without water) CuxCly, and thus the mass of water initially in the compound. Dissolving the salt in water and reacting the copper ions with a more reactive metal will separate out the copper. The copper collected in this way is then massed. The mass of chloride present in the compound is obtained by difference. Experimental Procedure: Removing the H2O: • Turn on the hotplate located between the desks or in the hood and adjust to a setting of 5 or 6. • Clean, dry, and weigh a small ceramic crucible. • Weigh out between 1 and 2 grams of the blue copper chloride hydrate into the crucible.
