Vocabulary: continent: One of the seven largest land areas on Earth. natural region: An area made up of places that share the same natural features. glacier: Huge sheets of ice that move slowly over land. till: A mixture of clay, sand, and rock that makes soil very rich. plateau: An area of high, flat land. plain: An area of low, flat land. climate: The kind of weather a place has most often. precipitation: Water that falls to Earth surface as rain, sleet, hail, or snow.

Places: Ohio’s Regions 1.) Glaciated Appalachian Plateau: Covers the central and northeastern parts of Ohio. Glaciers flattened this land 12,000 years ago and left behind rich soil. Today the soil in this area is good for farming.

2.) Unglaciated Appalachian Plateau: is in southeastern Ohio. This region has steep hills covered with trees. It also has deep valleys, rivers, and waterfalls. Much of this land is not good for farming.

3.) Till Plains: lie to the west of the Appalachian Plateau. This is an area of low, flat land. Glaciers also moved over this region. Till made the soil here very rich.

4.) Bluegrass: this region is in the southern part of Ohio. This triangle –shaped area lies between the Till Plains and the Appalachian Plateau. Because this area is hilly, water has washed away much of the soil.

5.) Lake Plains: are in northern Ohio. Glaciers formed the flat land of this region. The western part of this region was The Great Black Swamp. Many of Ohio’s shipping and trading ports are found along Lake Erie.
