Harold D. Hussey

Roswell, NeH Mexico

Augus t 1, 1976 Introduction

The family of Hussey, according to George T. Little (Genealogical and Family History of the State of Ma ine, 1909, p 43 5), "came into with William the Conqueror, in 1066 , and can be traced back to h'ugh Hoese of the year 1014. He married a daughter of the third Duke of Normandy . His name became changed from the German form to the French De Hosey, and this has been anglicized to Hussey~ 11 The Hussey noble who came to England with William was granted high office and considerable possessions. One of his descendents, Sir Hugh Hussey, went to Ireland in 1316 and est ablished the Hussey line there.

The Husseys of are descended from various immigrant ancestors, among whom are the following: Christopher Hussey, landed in in 1632; Hampton, N.H.,1638. Robert Hussey,of Duxbury,Ma ss.,1643. Probably died there in 1667. William Hussey(Hazzey),May 3,1665, in list of Freemen, Boston. Robert Hussey,Ma.y 15,1690, in list of Freemen, Boston. Robert Hussey, of Dover, N.H., on the tax list, 16590 Richard Hussey, of Dover, N. H., on the t.s..x list, 1690. (From lj_ttle and The New England Historical and Genealogical Regi ster, vols 3 & 4.)

There is doubt about the history of Richard Hussey. Charles W. Tibbetts states ( Geneal ogical Record, 1904), 11 It is certain that Richard was not a descendent of Christopher, of Hampton; i t is doubtfUl that he was a son of Robert, of Dover; he was the . emigrant according to t radition." Ezra s .Stearns asserts (Genealog ical and Family History of the State of New Hampshire, 1908), 11 t he records fail to show what if any relation any of the other settl ers bore to Richard. 11 These conclusions were accepted by Little ,1 909 , and by Henry S. Webster (N.H.G.Record,1909). E.H.Hussey, whose "History of the Richard Hussey Family," 1954, forms t he basis for my own history, follows Webster in stating that Richard "probabl y emigrated from .mgland or Ireland .. "

A different conclusion was reached by Rev. Alonzo H• . Quint,D. D. 1 of Dover,N.H. Writing on "The Hussey l\.ncestry of the Poet Whittier," (N.::.;: .H.&G.Reg. vol. 50, ( 1896 ) ,p 295), Rev. Quint st ates, "The records e.re ample which show that Whittier's mother, Abigail Hussey, was descended in a direct line , not from Christopher Hussey, of Hampton, (as Whittier had claimed), but from Robert Hussey, who was of Dove r as early as 1659.

11 Between Christopher Hussey and Robert Hussey, no wills, deeds, or any other papers, and no similarity of Christian names , have ever suggested any connection in the slightest degree.

11 Some years ago, in my wor k upon Dover hi story, and also from my warm love toward the poet, I made a thorough investigati on of the mother's ance stry. She was born in old Dover. I found her father's will, and traced back the pedi gree in its every step by public and Friends' records. To my su.rprize I found that the family ancestor was Hobert Hussey,

"Two or three years ago,, T found in the Boston Transcript 2

(Mar.3,1894, Query No .70), a complete and elaborate statement of· the pedigree, with full names and dutes, made by a gentleman of the Whittier name and blood. He had gone over the scme ground which I had traversed, although entirely i gnorant of my own labor: and our results, equally elaborate and complete, were exact l y alike". Rev . Quint had pr eviously contributed a family record of Robert Hussey, in which Richard Hussey 1-ras listed as a son. (N.E. H. W- . Reg.7:157). Another Richard Hussey has recently been added t o tho above list of Hussey ancestors. The Daughters of the Americe.n Revoluti on, in their book, 11 Mt. Hope Cemetery Re cords, Ma ine, D.. A. R., Bangor, Ma ine". ( 1961), have the following record on pages 1&3 of the section, 11 Hussey and Allied Lines, Albion Branch": Richard Hussey, born about 1644. To Dover,N.H.,1690. Re~ided Dover,N.. H., in 1695. We c: ver. Di ed 1710. Wife di ed 1729. The first genealogy of· the Richard Hussey Family wMaine , which was published in.N. H.G.Record, • • Vols. 6&7,1909. This record cover ed families of t he first three generGti ons. It was not compl eted because publication of that • quarterly magazine was abr uptl y ended. Data collected by Mr.Webster ' was used by Mr . l!: .H.Hussey in his 11 History of the Richard Hussey Family". Mr.Hussey also used additional data which was furnished :. by Mrs ,Frank Holmes and by himself. Thi s book is in the Maine Historical Society library in Portland, Naine.

Tracing my Mat ernal ancestors was easy, My mother was a Batchelder; her mother was a Peabody; her mother was a Bradstreet, and , the :immigrant, married Anne Dudley, Their families settled here in ~ ssex County and their family historie s have all been published. I consul ted these histories at the ~ssex Institute in Salem, Mass. This history is limited to my branch of the families involved and several collateral branches thc>.t contain a special interest. I have omitted the full pedigree of many f amilies, showing only the direct lines of descent. This work was begun several years ago when my daughter Louise asked me about our family hist ory.. I re cal led that, many yec:.rs ago, my mother told us children that there were Governors of early Massachusetts in her family tree. These ancestors are now revealed as Governors Thomas Dudl ey and Simon Bradstreet,. of Hassachuset ts Bay Colony. It was interesting t o diseover that John Greenleaf \.!hitti er's mother was J\bi gail Hussey; ·1. 'at Nat hani el Hawthorne married Sophia Amelia Peabody; that Ruth Hussey, the movie actre ss, is another cousin; and that Anne Dudl ey, ~he first American poet of either sex was a direct ancestor • •.• 1

APPEND I X B

Anne Dudley Bradst reet

Anne Dudley Bradstreet was born under very favor able c-..X-cumstances. Her father , Thomas Dudley, wh o had fough t for Queen Elizabeth against Philip II, was chief steward for the young Earl of Lincoln on his vast estates in in the east of England. Anne took advantage of the Earl 1 s large library, in her love of books , a nd absorbed the writings and ideas of many of the modern writers of the day. She was thus well prepared, amids t her duties as a housewife in a new l and to :'write a book that would be the sensation of its own age and one of the delights of ours."

Anne 1 s first volume of poems was published in London in 1650 . She was the mother of eight children, of whom sh e wrote in 1656 :

"I had ei ght birds hatch t in one nest, Four Cocks there were, and Hens the r est, I nurst them up with pain and care, Nor cost, nor l abour did I spare, Tell at the last they felt their wing , Mounted the Trees , and l earn'd to sing; ( Chief of the Brood then took ·his fligh t , (Dr. Samue l) To Regi ons far, and l eft me quite : My mournful chirps I aft er send, Till he r e turn, or I do end , Leave not thy nest, ·thy Dam and Sire, Fly ba~k and sing amidst thi s Quire . My second bird aid t ake hor flight, (Dorothy) And with her mate flew out of s i ght; Southward they both their course did be nd, And Seasons twain they t h ere did spend : Till aft er blown by Southern gal es , They Norward steer'd with f illed sayles . A prettier bird was no where seen, Al ong the Beach amo ng the treen. I have a third of colour white, (Sarah) On whom I plac' d no small delight; Coupled with mate loving and true, Hath a lso bid her Dam adieu : And where Aurora first app ears , She now hath percht, to spend her years; One to the Academy flew (Rev. Simon) To chat amo ng that l earned crew: Ambition moves s till in h is brest That h e might chant above the rest, Sti:±ving for more than to do well , That nigh t ingal es h e mi ght excell. My fifth, whose dmm is yet scarce gone (Col . Dudley) I s 1mongst the shrubs and bushes f lown, And as his wings increase in s tre ngth, On high er bough he ' l pearch at lenght . 20

Anne Dudley Bradst r eet (Cont ' d)

My other three, still with me nest, (Hannah, Mercy, & John) Until they'r grown, then as the r est, Or her e or there, they 1 1 take their flight, 1 As i s ordain'd, so shall they light. ; c (From Robert Hutchinson, Poems of , (New Yor k : Dover Publications, Inc ., 1969 , 222 pp . ) pp 1, 47 . ) 11 11 1\eeve 13eem:, eeHsielereel fl.er eest 5 is eat;itleQ. Anne's husband, Simon Bradstr eet, was one of the founders of Har l!a.rd College in 1636, the first college in America. It is not supris ing , ther efor e , that many of their children graduated from Harvard College.

** To My Dear and Lovi ng Husband If ever two were one , t hen surely we, If ever man were loved by wife, then thee. I f ever wife was happy in a man, Compar e with me , ye women , if ye can. I prize they love more than whole mines of go l d Or all the riches that th e East doth hold, My love is such th at rivers cannot quench, Nor aught but love from thee can r ecompense. Thy love i s s uch I can no way repay; Th e heavens r eward thee manifol d, I pray. Then, whil e we live , in l ove let ' s so persever, That while we live no more we may live forever .

This is the l ast s t anza of a poem addressed t o Mrs . Bradstreet ' s dead father, Thomas Dudley, onetime govern'Or of Massachusetts .
