TRIBUTE TO MICHEL DIDISHEIM “I ENDEAVOURED TO LAY THE FOUNDATIONS OF AN ORGANISATION THAT HAD TO BE SUSTAINABLE AND RELEVANT TO SOCIETY”

It was with enormous sadness, at the start of this year, that we learned of the death of Count Michel Didisheim (b.1930). We would like to pay tribute to this exceptional man and to thank him most sincerely for having tirelessly devoted thirty years of his life to the King Baudouin Foundation.

BIOGRAPHY OF COUNT DIDISHEIM

• Born in Wimbledon (London), 18 April 1930. • Married to Countess Monika von und zu Trauttmansdorff-Weinsberg in 1956. The couple had three sons and two daughters. • From 1962 to 1986, he was Chief of Staff to Prince Albert, future King Albert II of Belgium. • In 1971, he co-founded Inter-Environnement – Bond Beter Leefmilieu, where he was President until 1976. • In 1976, he created the King Baudouin Foundation, where he was successively Secretary General (1976-1981), Managing Director (1982-1995) and President (1994-1999). He sat on the Board of Governors from 1982 to 2004. • In 1997, the King Baudouin Foundation United States was created. Michel Didisheim was its first president. • Honorary President of the King Baudouin Foundation. • Died in Forest (Brussels), January 6, 2020. With Luc Tayart, in 1993.

“Shortly after the death of the King – it must have been in 1994 or 1995, when I was both the Managing Director and President of the Foundation – Luc Tayart and I got together to think about the long-term future of the King Baudouin Foundation. We both felt that the Foundation needed to distance itself from the Palace and that it became independent and European. And that’s exactly what happened. The Foundation kept the name of King Baudouin, in honour of a great man, but it would not be a royal foundation.”
