On behalf of the Brookings Project on U.S. Relations with the Islamic World, housed within the Saban Center for Middle East Policy, we welcome you to the 2011 U.S.- Islamic World Forum. For the first time in its eight-year history, we are delighted to be able to host the Forum here in Washington, DC. In partnership with the State of STEERING COMMITTEE Qatar, Brookings convenes this Forum annually under the gracious auspices of HRH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar. STEPHEN R. GRAND Director In recent months, we have witnessed dramatic events unfold throughout the Middle Project on U.S. Relations East and North Africa. From Tunisia to Egypt to Yemen, citizens are demanding re- with the Islamic World form and clamoring for change. This is a historic moment, with implications for Mus- lims around the globe and for the United States. Among the issues to be addressed are the recent wave of political uprisings that have swept through the Middle East and North Africa, the continued extremist violence in Pakistan, and the Arab-Israeli conflict. How should the U.S. view this remarkable dynamism in the region and what, if any, is the appropriate role for the United States? Wednesday, April 13 Bottom-Up Change: Civil Society, Youth, and Social GRAND BALLROOM 11:00am-12:45PM Entrepreneurship In light of recent events in the Arab world, what role do bottom-up processes play in effecting change, economic development, and political reform? How can the private sector and civil society address the socio-economic challenges that Muslim-majority countries continue to face? How are community devel- opment efforts and macro-level policies linked and in which areas can they be strengthened? How can the U.S. foster these developments appropriately? Are there resources that can be shared through NGO actors? While examin- ing these issues globally, countries of focus will include Egypt, Indonesia, and Morocco. Thursday April 14 The Role of the Media in Shaping Perceptions GRAND BALLROOM 11:00am-12:45PM This plenary session will bring together influential journalists from the U.S. and Muslim-majority countries to discuss the role of the media and the pub- lic in shaping perceptions. Issues to be examined include how the media shapes the public view, just as public appetite may influence the stories that receive coverage. For example, how does the media affect public perception of conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan? Does the media focus too much on in- flammatory stories, and if so, how does this shape public perception? How do different societies view these issues? And in particular, what is the public perception of the American Muslim community? 2011 U.S.-ISLAMIC WORLD FORUM Y E ar of C H A NGE 4 ROUNDTABLE SESSIONS Tuesday, April 12, 2011 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM SESSION The Role of Religious Leaders in Development: Case Studies from Asia This session, convened by the Asia Foundation, will examine the role of religious leaders in development. The Asia Founda- tion and leaders of religious organizations in Bangladesh, Malaysia, and the Philippines will draw from their experiences in Asia to explore how Muslim leaders are well placed to contribute to national and community development efforts. The session will also examine the potential for religious leaders to leverage their stature, respect, and influence to help drive governance and social reform. A Candid Assessment: The Status of the Middle East Peace Process The Arab-Israeli peace process, despite a short-lived resumption of direct talks between Palestinians and Israelis seven months ago, is at a standstill. Meanwhile, popular upheaval around the region, along with escalating violence between Israelis and Palestinians, threaten to sideline hopes for a peaceful settlement. How can the parties overcome the current impasse? And what role can the United States play in facilitating negotiations in the short-term and ending the conflict in the long-term? The Obama Administration’s Engagement with Global Muslim Communities In his 2009 Cairo speech, President Barack Obama sought to create a better relationship between the United States and global Muslim communities. This session will feature key administration officials who are integral to President Obama’s outreach to these communities. The panelists will speak about the kinds of projects they are working on and the global partnerships they have been engaged in. Panelists will also examine how effective this engagement has been and what chal- lenges still lie ahead. The Role of Youth in the Arab Upheaval Youth activists have played a leading role in the recent protests taking place across the Middle East and North Africa. This session will explore the relationship between youth mobilization and the changing political dynamics of the region. Can youth activism, whether through grassroots mobilization or civic engagement, be sustained? If so, what does this phenom- enon mean for the future of the region and for U.S.-Muslim world relations? This session will feature youth activists who have been on the front lines of the Arab uprisings. Looking at One Another: How U.S. and Muslim Perspectives Have Evolved Over the Last Decade* How has public opinion in the United States and in global Muslim communities changed since the events of 9/11? Has public opinion in global Muslim communities changed since President Obama came into office? What are the most critical issues, here in the U.S. and abroad, that influence public opinion and shape the public discourse? This session will feature public opinion experts and journalists who can speak to these issues.

During the first three decades of the twentieth century, Japanese society underwent significant changes in a short amount of time. After the intense modernizations of the late nineteenth century, the start of the twentieth century witnessed an increase in overseas militarism, turbulent domestic politics, an evolving middle class, and the expansion of roles for women to play outside the home. As such, the early decades of the twentieth century in Japan were a crucial period for the formation of modern ideas about femininity and womanhood. Before, during, and after the rule of her husband Emperor Taishō (1879-1926; r. 1912-1926), Empress Teimei held a highly public role, and was frequently seen in a variety of visual media.

    Professor Peter Piot’ Biography Baron Peter Piot KCMG MD PhD is the Director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and the Handa Professor of Global Health. He was the founding Executive Director of UNAIDS and Under Secretary-General of the United Nations (1995-2008). A clinician and microbiologist by training, he co-discovered the Ebola virus in Zaire in 1976, and subsequently led pioneering research on HIV/AIDS, women’s health and infectious diseases in Africa. He has held academic positions at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp; the University of Nairobi; the University of Washington, Seattle; Imperial College London, and the College de France, Paris, and was a Senior Fellow at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He is a member of the US National Academy of Medicine, the National Academy of Medicine of France, and the Royal Academy of Medicine of his native Belgium, and is a fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences and the Royal College of Physicians. He is a past president of the International AIDS Society and of the King Baudouin Foundation. In 1995 he was made a baron by King Albert II of Belgium, and in 2016 was awarded an honorary knighthood KCMG. Professor Piot has received numerous awards for his research and service, including the Canada Gairdner Global Health Award (2015), the Robert Koch Gold Medal (2015), the Prince Mahidol Award for Public Health (2014), and the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize for Medical Research (2013), the F.Calderone Medal (2003), and was named a 2014 TIME Person of the Year (The Ebola Fighters).

    ATPU102.2 Public Theology: Characteristics from the Multireligious Neighborhood Lucinda Allen Mosher* Given the multireligious neighborhood as its context, Lucinda Al- len Mosher argues that Christian public theology is characteristi- cally multidisciplinary, incamational, cognizant of other faiths and cultures, supportive of civil discourse, collaborative, And transformational. Specialists who address the specifically inter- religious concerns of the multifaith neighborhood in faith-rooted terms indeed function as public theologians. Keywords: multifaith, neighborhood, incamational, multidisci- plinary, global, civil, collabortive, transformational, public, dis- course, fear, interfaith Because I am a theologian who specializes in addressing multi- faith concerns, I often speak of the multireligious neighborhood or religious manyness when talking about the context in which I work. These terms name a state of affairs—a construction zone (to borrow an image from Terrence Tilley) calling for a theological response.*1 In the twenty-first century, that response has been answered by scholars from many religious traditions. Page 1 of 13 PEER REVIEWED ARTICLE: The Appeal of Sami Yusuf and the Search for Islamic Authenticity By Christian Pond A quick glance at the top 40 most requested songs on the Web site for the popular Arabic music video channel Melody Hits TV reveals the latest and greatest from stars such as Lebanon’s Nancy Ajram—infamous for her sexually suggestive videos—as well as others like America’s rapper Eminem and Egypt’s crooner Tamer Hosny. Next to each song’s title and number is also displayed a picture of the artist. At number 32, next to her hit Megamix, is a picture of Britney Spears staring at the viewer with the fingers of her right hand resting suggestively on her bottom lip. At number 35, popular rapper 50 Cent is shown in front of an expensive sports car wearing a fur coat, diamond-studded chain and black bandana. Wedged between the two at number 34 is the British Muslim singing phenomenon Sami Yusuf with his latest hit Hasbi Rabbi.(1) Well-dressed, sporting a fashionably cut, close-cropped beard and preferring tailored black suits to traditional dress, he is famous for his glitzy religious CDs and music videos. Born in 1980 to Azerbaijani parents, Sami Yusuf grew up in London and first studied music under his father, a composer. From a young age he learned to play various instruments and at the age of 18 was granted a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London.(2) In 2003, Yusuf released his first album entitled Al Mu’allim (The Teacher).

    Tribute | 101 Tribute: Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf and Her ‘Jihad’ of the Heart (December 1952–September 2015) Maryam Uwais MFR Born December 2, 1952 in Kano, Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf passed away on the 24th of September 2015, in the process of performing the Holy Pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. In the years between, she accomplished so much that it would be foolhardy to attempt to capture even the essence of her many achievements in one short tribute. Hajiya Bilkisu graduated in 1975 with a BSc degree in Political Science from the Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria, and, after an MA in political science from the University of Wisconsin in the United States, went on to become a journalist par excellence. She obtained an advanced diploma in journalism and international relations at the Moscow Institute for Journalism and International Relations, and became the first female editor of a daily newspaper and weekly magazine in Northern Nigeria. A devout Muslim, a loving mother of two children, an accomplished woman and role model, Hajiya Bilkisu was known for so much more than journalism. Her abiding passion for social justice and public service was manifest in the very many vocations that she successfully facilitated and engaged in over the years. She founded the Girl Child Concern (GCC), advocating for girl-child education to curb the many deprivations that diminish girls’ opportunities and potential, particularly in Northern Nigeria. GCC was a pioneer and shining example of what could be done for adolescent girls: from offering scholarships to indigent girls to organising summer camps, mentoring, skill acquisition and networking activities.
