MME’s agricultural quarantine offices inspect 5,577 imported shipments in February

THE Ministry of Municipality and Environment’s (MME) agricultural quarantine offices inspected 5,577 imported shipments weighing 101,373 tonnes of vari- ous types of imported agricultural consignments, such as plants and production inputs, at all customs ports in the country in February. The quarantine offices destroyed 85 shipments weighing more than 30 tonnes for violating the agri- cultural quarantine law and for certain damages. The agricultural quarantine is the first line of de- fence for protection from agricultural infections. The preventive procedure aims to protect the country’s agricultural wealth from foreign-originated pests. It also requires that all plants, agricultural products and any other materials shall be subject to phytosanitary regulations for its procedures and to ensure that other agricultural production inputs are in conformity with the conditions and specifications. Screening for bowel cancer on rise in Qatar, says PHCC official

TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK DOHA

THE Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) is partnering with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) and Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) to raise people’s awareness of colorectal cancer and the screening programmes available in Qa- tar, and also educate them on the importance of pre- vention and early detection. Catherine Gillespie, director of the National Cancer Program at the ministry, highlighted the need for all healthcare providers to work together during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March. She said: “The Na- tional Cancer Program team continues to work with all cancer care providers across the country to empower the public to make informed choices regarding lifestyle which can help reduce the risk of developing cancer.’’ Dr Shaikha Abu Shaikha, manager of Screening Programs at PHCC, said: “Over the past three years the dedication of the Screen for Life team has resulted in a unified vision of reaching out to people in larger num- bers through creating awareness of the importance of timely screening of cancer. In 2018, 10,803 people were screened for bowel cancer and since the launch of this programme more than 25,000 people have been screened. During March, which is celebrated as Bowel Cancer Awareness month, we have planned several initiatives to further deliver on our promises and make Qatar a healthier country.’’ Dr Mohamed Abunada, lead colorectal surgeon at HMC said: “The risk of colorectal cancer can be reduced through lifestyle changes and detected at a very early stage with routine screening. We hope that during this awareness month, people can be encouraged to undergo this potentially lifesaving measure and immediately take the initiative to discuss their screening options with their healthcare provider.” Hiba Nasser, head of the Health Education Depart- ment at QCS, said: “In our continuous efforts to reduce the burden of cancer on the community, we launched the ‘Your food…Your health’ campaign, which aims to raise awareness about the risk factors of colorectal cancer and focuses on the importance of early detection and preven- tion through lectures and workshops.” Colorectal cancer, also known as bowel cancer, usu- ally starts from polyps in the colon or rectum. Over time some polyps can transform into cancer. These polyps can be found through screening tests and removed before they turn into cancer. Environmental conditions, family history of colorec- tal cancer, personal history of inflammatory bowel dis- ease and poor diets rich in fat are among the major risk factors that can lead to colorectal disease.
