1 THE ACADEMIC PROCESSION The centuries-old pageantry of the academic procession comes from ancient tradition, rooted in the early universities. The solemn procession before you is the college’s way of giving depth and distinction to the commencement of these men and women.

Academic caps, gowns and hoods date back to the twelfth century, developing gradually from the long flowing robes that the teachers wore to protect themselves from the cold of the medieval buildings. Since the scholars of the time were usually clerics, their robes differed little from those used by the church orders. Slowly, certain styles were designated for the universities and these, with minor modifications, are the costumes worn today. Hoods were originally fashioned after the monk’s cowl; the mortarboard cap, with its tassels, evolved from the skull caps of the scholar-monks.

In France, where the degree program probably began, wearing the cap and gown marked the for- mal admission of the “licentiate” to the body of masters. In our country, caps and gowns have been used since colonial times. , or King’s College as it was then called, began this custom at an early date. New York University, the University of and others followed, and in 1894 a com- mission representing the leading American colleges met to discuss academic ceremonies. A year later, the intercollegiate code was adopted. Today, more than 700 colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Turkey and others follow this code. Standard styles in caps, gowns, and hoods for Doctors, Masters and Bachelors were established.

In recent years, distinctively colored gowns have been authorized for specific schools. For example, the Columbia gown is slate gray, the New York University gown is violet, the Yale gown is blue, the Harvard is crimson and The City University of New York gown is navy blue. The hoods worn over the shoulders and down the backs of the members of faculty reveal the degrees and institutions of the wearers. The velvet binding or edging is distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains. The silk lining of the hood is in the color or colors of the institution granting the degree. The shortest hood is the Bachelor’s; the longest and broadest is the Doctor’s; and the Master’s is midway between these in size. In the colors of the colleges, there is much duplication and it would be useless to identify them. However, there is a standard color for the subject and the degree, indicated by the velvet edging which shows in front and over the shoulders, and the most common of these are given below:

COLOR CODE FOR HOODS Arts, Letters, Humanities...... White Medicine...... Pink Commerce, Business...... Drab Music...... Silver Gray Economics...... Copper Pharmacy...... Olive Green Education...... Light Blue Philosophy...... Dark Blue Engineering...... Orange Physical Education...... Sage Green Fine Arts...... Brown Public Administration...... Peacock Blue Law...... Purple Science...... Golden Yellow Library Science...... Lemon Social Work...... Citron Medicine...... Green Theology...... Scarlet

THE MACE The mace, a traditional part of every academic ceremony, is a heavy staff used as a symbol of . It is carried by the leader of the procession, who is referred to as the Mace Bearer or the Grand Marshal.

In early Roman days the mace, carried by officers called lictors, consisted of a bundle of rods known as fasces that showed the authority of the magistrates. In medieval times, the mace was wielded in legislative assemblies to protect officials.

In the United States House of Representatives the mace is about three feet long, made of ebony rods with a band of silver. A silver globe stands on a protruding rod, and a silver eagle with wings outspread sits on top of the globe.

The John Jay College mace was created in 1968 by Anthony T. Muratore, a student and police detective. It is 29 inches long, in blue and gold, and bears the of the College and the seal of The City University of New York at its pinnacle. 2 COLLEGE PRESIDENTS

7 THE HONORARY DEGREES John Jay College of Criminal Justice honors two distinguished individuals who have enlightened society by their commitment to the principles of academic excellence and understanding for all.

MARIO-JOSE MOLINA Doctor of Sciences

Dr. Mario-Jose Molina shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995 for his work linking the en- vironmental release of chlorofluorocarbons to the destruction of the atmosphere’s ozone layer. Due in large part to Dr. Molina’s groundbreaking discoveries, the United States enacted a ban on aerosol-based CFCs in 1978 and led the effort to adopt a global ban on all CFCs in 1985. As Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California-San Diego, Dr. Molina oversees a research group concerned with laboratory studies of atmospheric chemical processes, as well as science-policy issues related to urban and regional air pollution and to global change. He has built a long and distinguished career based on his deep commit- ment to the environment and the problems – often human-based – that threaten it. Since win- ning the Nobel Prize 19 years ago, he has brought the full weight and prestige of the Nobel to his mission of cleaner and safer air. As a boy, he pursued a fascination with science in a laboratory he created in a converted bath- room, stocked with toy microscopes and chemistry sets. As a young man, Dr. Molina earned his PhD in Chemistry at the University of California-Berkeley, and then moved on to UC-Irvine for a postdoctoral fellowship. It was there that he began the course of scholarship that would lead, ultimately, to the Nobel Prize and his assured place among the ranks of the leading scientists of his day. His work at Irvine is also a testimony to the enduring power of mentoring. Working under Professor F. Sherwood Rowland, he helped to develop the CFC ozone depletion theory, a breakthrough of such consequence that they made a conscious effort to announce their find- ings outside the normal scientific community, informing policy makers and the news media of their work. Rowland was a co-winner of the Nobel Prize along with Dr. Molina. Since then, Dr. Molina has himself trained scores of graduate and postgraduate students in en- vironmental chemistry. Moreover, Dr. Molina donated most of the money from his share of the Nobel Prize to scientists and science educators working in developing countries. He also cre- ated the Mario Molina Center for Strategic Studies in Energy and the Environment, located in Mexico City, where important, cutting-edge research is conducted into complex environmental problems facing major cities, particularly in the developing world. The approach is dynamic, it- erative and educational, and aimed at improving both the process and the institutional capacity for environmental decision-making. In addition to the Nobel Prize, Dr. Molina has received numerous honors and awards for his work. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the National Academy of Science. He has also been honored by the American Chemical Soci- ety, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the United Nations, and in 2013 was named as a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. Dr. Molina’s work as a research scientist and educator epitomizes the values and vision of John Jay College of Criminal Justice. For his trailblazing scientific advocacy, and his tireless commitment to sound environmental policy worldwide, John Jay College of Criminal Justice confers upon Mario Molina the degree of doctor of sciences, honoris causa.

8 CHARLES FIGLEY Doctor of Letters

Dr. Charles Figley is a psychologist, family therapist and pioneer in the fields of post-traumatic stress and traumatology. He holds the Paul Henry Kurzweg, M.D., Distinguished Chair in Disas- ter Mental Health and is the Graduate School of Social Work Professor at Tulane University. His experience as a Vietnam War veteran and antiwar advocate set the stage for what would become a long and distinguished career dedicated to alleviating human suffering. Dr. Figley was attending a massive 1971 antiwar rally in Washington, D.C., where he heard a succession of veterans speak of their fears, rages, nightmares, substance abuse problems and dif- ficulties with a variety of life issues. This led him to graduate and post-graduate study in the field of psychology so that he could better understand, and help, his fellow veterans. He went on to found the Consortium on Veteran Studies, and to develop the diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The holder of a doctorate from Pennsylvania State University, in the interdisciplinary field of human development, Dr. Figley has applied his visionary scholarship to such specialized areas as combat stress, natural disasters, shootings and terrorist incidents, and much more. Following the 1995 bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City, Dr. Figley founded the Green Cross proj- ect, an international humanitarian organization that has provided consultation, training, counsel- ing and other emergency traumatology service in response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, the December 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka and the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007. He also provided extensive consultation to officials in Colorado in response to the 1999 Columbine High School shootings. Dr. Figley is also co-founder, along with his wife, Dr. Kathy Regan Figley, of the Figley Institute, which seeks to alleviate human suffering resulting from traumatic life experiences by providing professionals and lay people with cutting-edge traumatology training. As Director of the Tulane University Traumatology Institute, which he founded while at Florida State University, Dr. Figley is editor in chief of Traumatology, the leading independent, peer- reviewed, scientific/medical journal in its field. He was founding editor of the Journal of Trau- matic Stress, and is editor of the Routledge Psychosocial Stress Book Series. His scholarly output includes 20 books and 114 refereed journal articles. Among many professional honors, he has received the Pioneer Award from the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, which recognizes traumatologists for lifetime achievement that has significantly advanced the field. He received the 1997 Family Psychologist of the Year award from the American Psychological Association, and was a co-recipient, along with his wife, of the Distinguished Service to Families Award from the National Council on Family Relations for their post-9/11 response work. For his work as a pioneering traumatologist, which speaks directly to the values and vision of this institution, and for his tireless commitment alleviating human suffering, John Jay College of Criminal Justice confers upon Charles R. Figley the degree of doctor of letters, honoris causa.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA NATIONAL ANTHEM

O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,

What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming,

Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight

O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,

O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
