COMMON NAMES FOR INSECTICIDES
Have you been confused by some of the new cornmon names for insecticides that you find in some recornmendations and most research papers? If so, the attached list of names may help you.
Most insecticides on the market today have several names. First they have a chemical name or chemical definition which describes in words, letters, numbers, and phrases the exact chemical structure of the compound. Chemical names of most insecticides are usually long and complicated. Therefore, the original manufacturer assigns the chemical a number while it is in the initial phases of research. Sometimes the Entomological Society of America will also assign a research number to an experimental compound. About the time the chemical is ready for market, the manufacturer will give the insecticide one or more trade names. By the time an insecticide is ready for use, it may have more than one coined name and number. Therefore the Entomological Society of America's Committee on Insecticide Terminology or the American Standards Association or the Interdepartmental Cornmittee on Pest Control will assign the chemical one cornmon name which is mandatory in manuscripts of research work submitted for publication in the Journal of Economic Entomology. Many of the connnon names chosen are the original trade name, such as malathion, chlordane, and others.
A good example of a compound with many names and numbers is trichlorfon.
Chemical name: dimethyl (2,2,2-trichloro-1-hydroxyethyl) phosphonate
Original manufacturers number: Bayer 113/59
Entomological Society of America number: ENT 19763
Trade names: Dipterex (fly bait and PCO insecticide) Dylox (crop insecticide) Anthon (horse wormer) Neguvon (animal systemic spray and pour-on)
Other common names: chlorophos trichlorophon
Official common name: trichlorfon
The following list includes most of the insecticides on the market today which have a familiar trade name that is different than the official cornmon name. Insecticides that have a trade name but do not have an official connnon name and insecticides with names that are the same or similar to the trade name have been omitted to save space.

Does not include trade-named products that have not as yet been given a connnon name. Trade names are in capital letters. Trade names for non-insecticidal uses are in parenthesis.
