Generations of heroes The Argonautica of Apollonius Rhodius brings emphatically to the attention of its readers the distinction between the generation of the Argonauts and the heroes of the Trojan War in the next genera- tion. Apollonius initially highlights this emphasis in the episode of the Argonauts’ departure, when the baby Achilles is watching them, at AR 1.557-5581 σὺν καί οἱ (sc. Chiron) παράκοιτις ἐπωλένιον φορέουσα | Πηλείδην Ἀχιλῆα, φίλωι δειδίσκετο πατρί (“and with him his wife, hold- ing Peleus’ son Achilles in her arms, showed him to his dear father”)2; he does so again in 4.866-879, which describes Thetis and Achilles as a baby. More specifically Jacqueline Klooster (2014, 521-530), in discussing the treatment of time in the Argonautica, distinguishes four periods of time to which Apollonius refers: first, the time before the Argo sailed, from the beginning of the cosmos (featured in the song of Orpheus in AR 1.496-511); second, the time of its sailing (i.e. the time of the epic’s setting); third, the past after the Argo sailed and fourth the present inhab- ited by the narrator (both hinted at by numerous allusions and aitia). -

This is particular ly true for the classical period wnere the sources are few and scattered. For the archaic period the situation has been somewhat better. One of the first attempts toward the study of Corinthian 1 history was made in 1876 by Ernst Curtius. This brief art icle had no pretensions to a thorough investigation of the subject, merely suggesting lines of inquiry and stressing the importance of numisihatic evidence. A contribution of 2 similar score was undertaken by Erich Wilisch in a brief discussion suggesting some of the problems and possible solutions. This was followed by a second brief discussion 3 by the same author. -

Timeline of Ancient Greece As we go through the notes, fill in the important events for each date on your timeline. 20 points- TEST GRADE! 776 BC Discus Throw Crown of (painted on Olive pottery) Leaves The year of the 1st Olympic games 776 BCE • The games were held every 4 years in Olympia, in honor of the god Zeus. • Some of the sports included wrestling, jumping, javelin and chariot racing. • A crown of olive branches was awarded to the winner. 650 BCE Statue of Chest of Kypselos (or Periander Cypselus) The 'city-state' Corinth was taken over by Kypselos and he made himself the ruler. 650 BCE • Kypselos (or Cypselus) was a tyrant, or an absolute ruler who governs without restrictions. • When Kypselos died, his son Periander took over the role of tyrant. 508 BCE Democracy began in Athens. 508 BCE • We still use this term today meaning 'ruled by the people'. • Male citizens were given the chance to vote in order to decide how the city-state should be run. • This is often said to be one of the Ancient Greek’s greatest ideas. 500 BCE The Painting on Parthenon in Greek pottery 2008 The start of the 'Classical Period' in Greece. 500 BCE • At this time there was a lot of interest in arts, imagination and buildings - especially in the city-state Athens. • This period continued until 323BC. 490 BCE Painting of the Battle of Marathon The Greeks defeated Persian invaders at the battles of Marathon (490BCE) and Salamis (480BCE). • The Persian empire was led by a powerful king, Darius, and controlled most of the Middle East. -

This thesis surveys the earliest versions of Medea’s myth to establish a basic narrative and furnish a range of variations. In particular, I examine the use of similar scenes in tragedies by Euripides and Seneca for contrasting representations of Medea. Individual analyses of Medea’s representation by each playwright demonstrate how her character is altered and what the activation of different mythical variants means in their cultural contexts. Medea’s gender plays a prominent role in her myth and this thesis analyzes its affect on her representation and perception. By demonstrating the manipulability of a specific mythical character based on a playwright’s preference or societal perception, this thesis explores the organic and dynamic nature of myth. -

From thence they again migrated to Dryopis; and having passed from Dryopis into Peloponnesus, they were called the Doric race.” This connected account cannot be considered as derived immediately from ancient tradition; but can only be viewed as an attempt of the father of history to arrange and reconcile various legends. Nor indeed is it difficult to discover and examine the steps of the argument which led him to this conclusion.
