After a brief survey of the range of penalties avail- able in Classical Athens (capital punishment, exile and outlawry, disenfran- chisement, financial penalties, imprisonment, corporal penalties), it proceeds first to examine their nature (as they frequently fail to meet our criteria of punishment), and then to map them on the substance vs. procedure controversy regarding the Athenian legal system. The last two sections of the paper are devoted to the manner in which penalties were imposed (summary punish- ment, punishment by sentence, “automatic” punishment) and executed (private vs. public execution of court verdicts; coercive measures etc.). Royal Power, Law and Justice in Ancient Macedonia Joseph Roisman In his speech On the Crown Demosthenes often lionizes himself by suggesting that his actions and policy required him to overcome insurmountable obstacles. Thus he contrasts Athens’ weakness around 346 B.C.E. with Macedonia’s strength, and Philip’s II unlimited power with the more constrained and cumbersome decision-making process at home, before asserting that in spite of these difficulties he succeeded in forging later a large Greek coalition to confront Philip in the battle of Chaeronea (Dem.18.234–37). [F]irst, he (Philip) ruled in his own person as full sovereign over subservient people, which is the most important factor of all in waging war . he was flush with money, and he did whatever he wished. He did not announce his intentions in official decrees, did not deliberate in public, was not hauled into the courts by sycophants, was not prosecuted for moving illegal proposals, was not accountable to anyone. In short, he was ruler, commander, in control of everything.1 For his depiction of Philip’s authority Demosthenes looks less to Macedonia than to Athens, because what makes the king powerful in his speech is his freedom from democratic checks. Nevertheless, his observations on the Macedonian royal power is more informative and helpful than Aristotle’s references to it in his Politics, though modern historians tend to privilege the philosopher for what he says or even does not say on the subject. Aristotle’s seldom mentions Macedonian kings, and when he does it is for limited, exemplary purposes, lumping them with other kings who came to power through benefaction and public service, or who were assassinated by men they had insulted.2 Moreover, according to Aristotle, the extreme of tyranny is distinguished from ideal kingship (pambasilea) by the fact that tyranny is a government that is not called to account. -

The Roles of Solon in Plato’s Dialogues Dissertation Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Samuel Ortencio Flores, M.A. Graduate Program in Greek and Latin The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Bruce Heiden, Advisor Anthony Kaldellis Richard Fletcher Greg Anderson Copyrighy by Samuel Ortencio Flores 2013 Abstract This dissertation is a study of Plato’s use and adaptation of an earlier model and tradition of wisdom based on the thought and legacy of the sixth-century archon, legislator, and poet Solon. Solon is cited and/or quoted thirty-four times in Plato’s dialogues, and alluded to many more times. My study shows that these references and allusions have deeper meaning when contextualized within the reception of Solon in the classical period. For Plato, Solon is a rhetorically powerful figure in advancing the relatively new practice of philosophy in Athens. While Solon himself did not adequately establish justice in the city, his legacy provided a model upon which Platonic philosophy could improve. Chapter One surveys the passing references to Solon in the dialogues as an introduction to my chapters on the dialogues in which Solon is a very prominent figure, Timaeus- Critias, Republic, and Laws. Chapter Two examines Critias’ use of his ancestor Solon to establish his own philosophic credentials. Chapter Three suggests that Socrates re- appropriates the aims and themes of Solon’s political poetry for Socratic philosophy. Chapter Four suggests that Solon provides a legislative model which Plato reconstructs in the Laws for the philosopher to supplant the role of legislator in Greek thought. -

DEWALD, CAROLYN, Narrative Surface and Authorial Voice in Herodotus' "Histories" , Arethusa, 20:1/2 (1987:Spring/Fall) p.147 NARRATIVE SURFACE AND AUTHORIAL VOICE IN HERODOTUS' HISTORIES CAROLYN DEWALD It is a topos nowadays that an author does not just construct his text but also encodes into it a narrative contract: he writes into the text the rules by which his audience is to read it, how we are to under stand his performance as author and our own responsibilities and legitimate pleasures as readers. 1 Judged by the standards of later historical prose, the narrative contract that Herodotus establishes be tween himself, the author, and ourselves, his readers, is a peculiar one. Its rules are very odd indeed. Here I would like to explore two aspects of those rules: the construction of the narrative surface and of the authorial "I" within it. Both these aspects of Herodotus' rhetoric have generally been evaluated against the standard practices of history writing. But if we look at Herodotus' narrative surface and authorial voice on their own terms, the contract they suggest is not (at least in some essentials) a historical one. The Herodotus I would like to pro pose here is a heroic warrior. Like Menelaus on the sands of Egypt, he struggles with a fearsome beast - and wins. The antagonist that He rodotus struggles with is, like many mythic beasts, a polymorphously fearsome oddity; it consists of the logos, or collection of logoi, that comprise the narrative of the Histories. What Herodotus, like Mene laus, wants from his contest is accurate information. -
Citations in Classics and Ancient History
Citations in Classics and Ancient History The most common style in use in the field of Classical Studies is the author-date style, also known as Chicago 2, but MLA is also quite common and perfectly acceptable. Quick guides for each of MLA and Chicago 2 are readily available as PDF downloads. The Chicago Manual of Style Online offers a guide on their web-page: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html The Modern Language Association (MLA) does not, but many educational institutions post an MLA guide for free access. While a specific citation style should be followed carefully, none take into account the specific practices of Classical Studies. They are all (Chicago, MLA and others) perfectly suitable for citing most resources, but should not be followed for citing ancient Greek and Latin primary source material, including primary sources in translation. Citing Primary Sources: Every ancient text has its own unique system for locating content by numbers. For example, Homer's Iliad is divided into 24 Books (what we might now call chapters) and the lines of each Book are numbered from line 1. Herodotus' Histories is divided into nine Books and each of these Books is divided into Chapters and each chapter into line numbers. The purpose of such a system is that the Iliad, or any primary source, can be cited in any language and from any publication and always refer to the same passage. That is why we do not cite Herodotus page 66. Page 66 in what publication, in what edition? Very early in your textbook, Apodexis Historia, a passage from Herodotus is reproduced. -

This is particular ly true for the classical period wnere the sources are few and scattered. For the archaic period the situation has been somewhat better. One of the first attempts toward the study of Corinthian 1 history was made in 1876 by Ernst Curtius. This brief art icle had no pretensions to a thorough investigation of the subject, merely suggesting lines of inquiry and stressing the importance of numisihatic evidence. A contribution of 2 similar score was undertaken by Erich Wilisch in a brief discussion suggesting some of the problems and possible solutions. This was followed by a second brief discussion 3 by the same author. -
Women in Xenophon's Anabasis
For there were many hetairai in the army: Women in Xenophon's ~4.nabasis 1 The mercenaries of Cyrus, the CyreaiLS, whose story Xenophon recounts in his Anabasis, are familiar figures to students of ancient warfare. 2 The women who accompanied the Cyreans for much of their march, in contrast, have so far received scant attention from historians more often interested in the details of tactics and leadership. 3 Nor is such neglect solely the fault of old~ fashioned military types, for even those who focus on the political and social aspects of the Anabasis army largely ignore its women4 What is more, although women make repeated appearances in Xenophon's narrative, scholars of women's roles and status in the ancient Greek have scarcely noticed their presence 5 This last omission appears all the more strildng, given the amount of scrutiny accorded recently to the category of the hetaira, and given that Xenophon several times describes women amongst the Cyreans as hetairai. 6 The histories of women and of warfare, it would seem, are not supposed to mix. Such an artificial boundary clearly invites brealdng, and the Anabasis provides invaluable material for the task. This essay examines Xenophon' s testimony on the origins and number of women amongst the Cyreans and the extent of their participation in the social life of the army. His narrative, as we shall see, indicates that at least some of the women who joined the Cyreans in the retreat from Cunaxa to the sea and thence to Byzantium became integral members of the soldiers' community. -

Ammianus Marcellinus on the Geography of the Pontus Euxinus
Histos () – AMMIANUS MARCELLINUS ON THE GEOGRAPHYOF THE PONTUS EUXINUS “Das eitle Bemühen um Allwissenheit, wie es der Fluch aller encyclo- pädischen Bildung ist, und vor allem der Fluch jener unseligen, auch auf dem geistigen Gebiet, in der Trümmerwelt einer grössern Vergang- enheit kümmerlich hausenden Generationen war, zeigt sich bei Ammian … auf diesem Gebiet …” This quotation of more than a century ago by Theodor Mommsen expresses a harsh verdict on Ammianus Marcellinus’ acquaintance with the geogra- phy of the world as it was known in his days (it is geographical knowledge which is meant by “diesem Gebiet”). In this field Ammianus had a “schein- haftes Bescheidwissen” and empty words had to conceal his “Unkenntniss”, according to the same Mommsen. Mommsen’s article, written in reaction to V. Gardthausen’s Die geographischen Quellen Ammians , which expressed a more positive opinion, had a great impact. Soon Mommsen’s unfavourable view of Ammianus’ knowledge of geography was widely accepted and has for a long time not been seriously disputed. The Res Gestae of the fourth-century historian Ammianus Marcellinus started where Tacitus had left off, that is in the year C.E. with the reign of Nerva, and ended at the year . The work originally consisted of books, but the first books have unfortunately been lost. The extant books cover only some twenty-five years of Roman history, namely the years from to . Thus Ammianus wrote the history of his own time, of which he himself was not only a part but also an eyewitness, since he was present at several important events of this period.
