The fleet engages in fishing coastal stocks along the extensive shoreline of Greece’s mainland and numerous islands. The largest segment of the fleet (96.52%) is made up of vessels fishing multiple species near the coast using static gear. -

Saint Alexius SAINT OF THE DAY 17-07-2021 Saint Alexius of Rome (4th-5th centuries) has been over the centuries a source of inspiration for men of letters and artists. Over time, various hagiographic versions of his figure have emerged, united by a fundamental trait: his renunciation of everything in order to follow God, obtaining the hundredfold promised by Jesus. His life is known through three traditions, one Syriac, one Greek and one Latin. The Syriac version, dating back to the end of the 5th century, is the oldest. It tells of a rich young man originally from Constantinople, the “New Rome”, who secretly boarded a ship the night before his wedding and reached Syria. That young man then continued on his way to Edessa (in what is now southern Turkey), a city with a large Christian community that for centuries guarded the Mandylion, a cloth bearing the Face of Jesus and identified by several scholars with the Shroud of Turin. There he lived begging for alms and in the evening he distributed to the poor what he had collected during the day, keeping for himself only the bare minimum to survive. Prayer and penance filled his days and because of his asceticism, the people called him Mar Riscia, that is “man of God”. After 17 years spent in Edessa, feeling close to the moment of death, he revealed that he belonged to a noble Roman family and had renounced marriage to consecrate himself to God. We have been touring in the United States and Ireland since 1997. We are multi-instrumentalists and vocalists who play a variety of musical styles on over 30 instruments from around the World. Around the World in 30 Instruments is a multi-cultural educational concert presenting Traditional music from Ireland, Scotland, England, Medieval & Renaissance Europe, the Americas and India on a variety of musical instruments including hammered & mountain dulcimer, mandolin, mandola, bouzouki, Medieval and Renaissance woodwinds, recorders, tinwhistles, banjo, North Indian Sitar, Medieval Psaltery, the Andean Charango, Irish Bodhran, African Doumbek, Spoons and vocals. Our program lasts 1 to 2 hours and is tailored to fit the audience and specific music educational curriculum where appropriate. We have performed for libraries, schools & museums all around the country and have presented in individual classrooms, full school assemblies, auditoriums and community rooms as well as smaller more intimate settings. During the program we introduce each instrument, talk about its history, introduce musical concepts and follow with a demonstration in the form of a song or an instrumental piece. Our main objective is to create an opportunity to expand people’s understanding of music through direct expe- rience of traditional folk and world music. I have only included a few contributions to the reading and interpretation of old finds as well as a small selection of publications that adduce inscriptions for the study of religious phenomena. The Ghikas House on Hydra: From Artists’ Haven to Enchanted Ruins HELLE VALBORG GOLDMAN Norwegian Polar Institute We sat on the terrace under the starry sky and talked about poetry, we drank wine, we swam, we rode donkeys, we played chess—it was like life in a novel. (Ghikas, quoted in Arapoglou 56) Introduction The Greek island of Hydra has become known for the colony of expatriate painters and writers that became established there in the 1950s and 60s (Genoni and Dalziell 2018; Goldman 2018). Two ‘literary houses,’ the homes of several of the island’s most well-known foreign residents during that era—the Australian couple, writers George Johnston and Charmian Clift, and Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen—have become places of pilgrimage for aficionados of Australian literature and popular music. Visitors wend through the maze of car- less, stone-paved lanes, asking for directions along the way, in order to stand outside the objects of their quests. Standing in the small public courtyard in front of the Johnstons’ house, or the tight laneway fronting the Cohen house, there is not much to see—the houses are quiet, the doors closed, the stone and white-washed walls surrounding the properties, which are typical of Hydra, are high. This doesn’t keep people from coming. They can picture in their minds’ eyes what is on the other side of the walls, having seen photographs of the writers at work and leisure inside the houses, and having read the books and listened to the songs that were written while the Johnstons and Cohen were in residence. -

Sprague 2007 The Parthenon frieze has been the subject of many debates and the interpretation of it leads to a number of problems: what was the subject of the frieze? What would the frieze have meant to the Athenian audience? The Parthenon scenes have been identified in many different ways: a representation of the Panathenaic festival, a mythical or historical event, or an assertion of Athenian ideology. This paper will examine the Parthenon Frieze in relation to the metopes, pediments, and statues in order to prove the validity of the suggestion that it depicts the Panathenaic festival just preceding the battle of Marathon in 490 BC. The main problems with this topic are that there are no primary sources that document what the Frieze was supposed to mean. The scenes are not specific to any one type of procession. The argument against a Panathenaic festival is that there are soldiers and chariots represented. Possibly that biggest problem with interpreting the Frieze is that part of it is missing and it could be that the piece that is missing ties everything together. The Parthenon may have been the only ancient Greek temple with an exterior sculpture that depicts any kind of religious ritual or service. Because the theme of the frieze is unique we can not turn towards other relief sculpture to help us understand it.
