Warblington School Message from Mike Hartnell, Headteacher At the start of term, I spoke to the students about making ‘first impressions’ and how we only ever get once chance to make that first impression. I write this week with real pride in the staff and students of Warblington School. Open Evening on Tuesday was a resounding success with so many positive comments about the staff being so welcoming and the students, who were described on a number of occasions as being a “real credit to the school”. A great first impression made. The tour guides from Years 10 and 11 did a fantastic job and my thanks go to them and the many others who gave up their evening to help showcase the school. On Thursday we welcomed Colin Rainford, head of The Hayling College, to walk the school with me. He was impressed with how well students could articulate their learning to him and how keen they were to share what they had achieved. They showed real pride in their school. I have to pass comment on Years 10 and 11 too – they have made a really great start to the year. Having been in many of their lessons this week is has been clear the bar of expectation is high for them and they are rising to that challenge well and are doing their best to achieve big things. I have encouraged Year 11 to break all records come next August and they have started on that journey really well! The maths department held their annual Maths Challenge this week, with our student helpers contributing to a highly successful event, won by Emsworth Primary. Well done to the Year 10 football team who went over to the Isle of Wight on Wednesday and beat Sandown Bay 2-1. Congratulations! Once again, thank you for your continued support and if you are a Twitter user, our new twitter account of @warblingtonsch will go live very shortly where you will be able to keep up to speed with all the good things that go on here. Finally, please read the letter from the Havant Federation of schools together with the three joint statements which can be found on our school website. Enjoy the weather and have a good weekend. And while also unable to better former British number one and two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray in getting his hands on a title at SW19, Bowden, 13, insists it has only fuelled his desire to come back to the venue again. The Warblington School student said: ‘It was nice – a lot nicer than the grass I normally play on! ‘The grounds are amazing and it was lovely to get the chance to play at Wimbledon. ‘I knew I was good enough to play having won qualifiers so that gave me confidence. ‘I’ve come as a fan five or six times and managed to see Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal play. ‘It’s a weird feeling to know you’ve played on the same court but really good to know they also hit the same shots as you.’ Continued overleaf…. The Road to Wimbledon began in 2002 and expanded initially to India in 2014. It has since added qualifying events in China, Hong Kong, India and Japan. Juniors participate in the UK in England, Scotland and Wales, starting in their club, park or school, with players qualifying for the county finals and then the national finals. Each year more than 10,000 youngsters take part in the series of national tennis tournaments, helping to inspire the next generation of Wimbledon stars. Former British number one Tim Henman was also in attendance for finals day and he admitted he had been impressed with what he had seen. ‘This event has been taking place for 15 years and the kids that come to Wimbledon make some amazing memories,’ he said. ‘The Championships is the biggest and best tournament in the world, so giving people the opportunity to experience the facilities and the grass is special. ‘The standard is getting better all the time. When we first started it was about participation but as the event has grown, we’ve attracted some really top-quality players.’ Each year more than 10,000 youngsters take part in the series of national tennis tournaments, helping to inspire the next generation of Wimbledon stars. Mrs Griffin, PE Year 7 Reading Project Year 7 are currently undertaking a very exciting reading project. Each tutor group are reading a different book each term and every book has got different questions and work attached to it, so during the course of the term, each tutor group works their way through the work. Students in Year 7 have been given reading journals where they can record what books they have read and once they hit certain targets, they earn badges for their reading! 7A took their reading outside on Thursday and enjoyed reading quietly in the sunshine! Every bike must be locked within the bike sheds with a secure bike lock. Solid D shaped bike locks are a good example of a solid secure bike lock. If your child arrives late to school for any reason on their bike, they will need to notify Reception who will be happy to get the bike sheds unlocked for them to store their bike securely during the school day. Today there are 130 bikes in our bike sheds, 26 of those bikes are not locked and some of them have locks attached to them but are not being used. Keep your bike safe and secure! Governments must provide good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment so that children can stay healthy. Richer counties must help poorer countries achieve this.
