Das ist doch nicht mehr so. Also war es in der alten Welt anders, als in der jetzigen. Die Apostel Jesu hatten die Gabe, Wunder zu thun, nie gelernte fremde Sprachen zu reden, und diese Gabe andern mitzutheilen. Das alles haben wir Prediger nun nicht mehr. Das wunderbare Gute der vormaligen Welt ist nicht mehr; und das wunderbare Böse derselben sollte jetzt noch da seyn?1 Heinrich Gottlieb Zerrenner, qui fut certes un disciple de l’emblématique théologien des Lumières allemandes Semler, est sans doute légitiment tombé dans l’oubli de l’histoire des idées. Pourtant, il appréhenda en 1784 les changements culturels de son temps en des termes qui ne sont pas sans rappeler la grandiose synthèse wébérienne embrassant l’histoire de l’Occident sous l’angle d’un processus de rationalisation entamé bien involontairement par les auteurs de l’Ancien Testament2. S’adressant à une population peu instruite, Zerrenner reprenait pour sa part la sémantique et l’argumentation déployées par le théologien cartésien Balthazar Bekker presqu’un siècle avant lui3. Five years ago I pin-chased from an eminent French publisher some tasteful wood-engravings, illustrative of the History of Playing Cards. These, with the small work in which they originally appeared, were placed in the hands of the late Rev. Ed. S. Taylor, of Onnesby St. Margaret, Great Yarmouth, as mate rial for a History of Playing Cards, English and Foreign, which he had offered to undertake for me. The readers of Notes and Queries will remember this gen tleman as the valued contributor of many curious articles to that useful periodical. His knowledge was wide and varied, although his tastes were of that peculiar kind which delights in the careful exploration of the bye-ways, rather than the high roads, of learning. The first part of the work was soon in the printers' hands, but ill-health followed, and the book proceeded slowly up to the time of the Editor's decease, two years ago. It was deemed necessary to mention this fact, as some of the references are to matters long since passed, although they are stated as of the present day. IV PREFACE. Il ne songe qu’à son affaire et gagne où les autres perdent. Il ne néglige rien, il profite de tout, il n’est point distrait ; en un mot sa bonne conduite défie la fortune.
