Résumé : Cette étude propose d’explorer le XVIIIe siècle lyonnais sous l’angle des jeux, activité pratiquée par toutes les catégories de la société, très souvent de manière illicite, et conduisant à l’existence d’acteurs spécifiques tels que les tenanciers de tripot, les cartiers ou encore la police des jeux. Introduction Le jeu r’assemble tout : il unit à la fois Le turbulent marquis, le paisible bourgeois. La femme du banquier, dorée et triomphante, Coupe orgueilleusement la duchesse indigente. Là, sans distinction, on voit aller de pair Le laquais d’un commis avec un duc et pair. Et, quoyqu’un sort jaloux nous ai fait d’injustices, De sa naissance ainsi l’on vange les caprices. Ces vers prononcés à la scène V de l’acte III dans la pièce de théâtre intitulée Le joueur de Jean-François Regnard 1 sont ceux de Valère, un individu tiraillé entre sa passion du jeu et son amour pour Angélique. Dans cette comédie en cinq actes, représentée pour la première fois à Paris le 19 décembre 1696, Valère incarne le joueur échouant à dominer sa passion et perdant l’amour de son amante exaspérée par son comportement. À travers cet extrait, Valère résume bien l’attrait considérable du jeu dans la société du XVIIIe siècle. Aucune catégorie sociale n’est épargnée. Les deux derniers vers évoquent le désir de corriger sa fortune par le jeu, signifiant que jeu et argent vont de pair. En effet, les jeux d’argent gagnent les diverses couches de la société et envahissent l’espace urbain par le biais des cafés, des cabarets, des tripots clandestins, des jeux de paume et même de la rue. Olivier Grussi écrit d’ailleurs qu’« on jouait partout aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles »2, avec une nette préférence pour ces jeux de hasard et d’argent, sans pour autant délaisser totalement les autres. Le développement des pratiques du jeu dans la France du XVIII e siècle accompagne largement l’essor urbain du royaume. Au temps des Lumières, les

Among the Paris crowd, who are supposed to be so clever, there are some men who fancy themselves infinitely more attractive in uniform than in their ordinary clothes, and who attribute to women so depraved a taste that they believe they will be favorably impressed by the aspect of a busby and of military accoutrements. The countenance of this Captain of the Second Company beamed with a self-satisfaction that added splendor to his ruddy and somewhat chubby face. The halo of glory that a fortune made in business gives to a retired tradesman sat on his brow, and stamped him as one of the elect of Paris—at least a retired deputy-mayor of his quarter of the town. And you may be sure that the ribbon of the Legion of Honor was not missing from his breast, gallantly padded a la Prussienne. Proudly seated in one corner of the milord, this splendid person let his gaze wander over the passers-by, who, in Paris, often thus meet an ingratiating smile meant for sweet eyes that are absent. The vehicle stopped in the part of the street between the Rue de Bellechasse and the Rue de Bourgogne, at the door of a large, newly-build house, standing on part of the court-yard of an ancient mansion that had a garden.

Jeux de rôles et jeux d’argent dans La Cagnotte Florence Fix, Université de Lorraine e La Cagnotte, pièce du célèbre dramaturge comique de la fin du XIX siècle Eugène Labiche, est un vaudeville, une pièce en 5 actes qui contient des passages chantés, représentée pour la première fois à Paris au théâtre du Palais Royal le 22 février 1864 avec un très grand succès. La pièce tint l’affiche quatre mois et atteignit sa millième représentation en 1905, soit deux ans avant que la loi de 1907 autorise de façon limitée la présence de casinos dans les stations thermales et balnéaires. À l’époque de la pièce, dont l’action se situe « de nos jours », la France est encore sous le coup de la loi de 1836 qui prohibe les jeux d’argent et de hasard, au cœur d’une période de stabilité apparente vouée à l’exclusion de l’accidentel, du hasard et de l’impromptu dont le théâtre comique s’entend toutefois à restituer la saveur et la surprise.
