Il faut avouer que je suis content de dire au public que vous avez encouragé l’auteur à l’écrire, et que vous avez jugé intéressant le sujet dont il s’est occupé. Si le public n’est pas de votre avis, me voilà autorisé à lui reprocher son indifférence. Par-dessus le marché, vous êtes un joueur acharné, et, à ce titre, vous devez me servir de parrain. La cette épître : postérité l’apprendra par Béranger , en sa verte vieillesse , a joué un nombre incalculable de piquets à écrire ce jeu l’ennuyait fort et il revenait , y t tous les soirs. Entrée en matière. 11 y a sur la terre une race d’hommes qui s’y promènent sans se soucier des dissertations que messieurs les érudits ont fabriquées pour avoir l’air d’expliquer leur origine. Je veux parler des Bohémiens. Sorciers, bateleurs ou filous, Gais Bohémiens, d’où venez-vous? leur demande la chanson du maître; et elle ré- pond de leur part : D’où nous venons? L’on n’en sait rien. On ne sait pas très-nettement d’où ils viennent, et c’est fâcheux; si on le savait, on saurait du même coup d’où nous sont venues les cartes. Eh quoi! les dictionnaires et les encyclopédies trompent donc le public, lorsqu’ils lui affirment que les cartes ont été inventées sous Charles VI par un miniaturiste attaché à la cour et nommé Gringon- neur? Les dictionnaires et les encyclopédies trom- pent le public, cela est très-certain. Il est donc nécessaire, avant de marcher plus avant, que tout lecteur français se démunisse d’une certaine quantité de son patriotisme et qu’il renonce à croire aveuglément que les cartes à jouer sont une invention nationale, imaginée à l’effet d’amuser Charles VI dans ses jours de folie \ Il y a une con- solation attachée à ce sacrifice, celle de savoir que nul autre peuple d’Europe n’a de meilleures raisons à donner pour sa part, et celle aussi de pouvoir affirmer que la France a, comme en toutes choses, tiré le meilleur parti de l’invention étrangère, l. C’est le P. Ménestrier, dans les dernières années du siècle de Louis XIV, qui, trouvant dans les comptes de Charles VI lenom du peintre Gringonneur, et une mention de jeux de cartes enlu- minés par lui, a rédigé une dissertation dans laquelle il a enchâssé sa trouvaille. Depuis le P. Ménestrier, les savants ont découvert des cartes bien plus anciennes, ou plutôt des témoignages bien plus anciens; mais les savants seuls ont vu que leur devancier avait commis une bévue, et le vulgaire vit toujours sur l’opinion qui a été accréditée et qu’on n’a pas suffisamment contredite. Digitized by Google LES CARTES A JOUER. 3 qu’elle y a réglé le désordre et qu’elle y a mis de l’esprit. La vérité est que les cartes à jouer nous viennent de l’Asie, comme les échecs, et que leur origine remonte à la plus haute antiquité. Nous allons nous en convaincre. Une autre vérité, c’est que les cartes ont été intro- duites en Europe par les Bohémiens, vers la fin du xme siècle, et qu’elles ont été connues dans les con- trées méridionales avant d’être répandues en France. Ces cartes, venues de si loin, ne ressemblaient guère à celles dont nous nous servons aujourd’hui, et qui, en effet, sont de création française. C’é- taient des images symboliques combinées mysté- rieusement par la sagesse de l’Inde , et plutôt des- tinées à l’interprétation des volontés de la divinité inconnue que préparées pour l’amusement des profanes. Nos cartes à nous sont bien différentes. On n’a malheureusement pas conservé les échan- tillons des premiers jeux de cartes connus en Eu- rope, et on ne peut s’en faire une idée que d’a- près les cartes-tarots, qui les représentent plus au vif que nos cartes. On joue encore aux tarots en Suisse et en Allemagne; on y joue même en Alsace et dans la Franche-Comté. Mais les Parisiens ne connaissent pas les tarots, et c’est pourtant la seule image qui nous reste des cartes antiques , telles que les Bohémiens les ont apportées en Europe. Peut-être un jour, en fouillant le sol de l’Asie, trouvera-t-on des monuments enfouis qui vien- dront servir de base à l’histoire des temps héroï- ques du jeu de cartes. En l’incertitude où nous sommes aujourd’hui, qu’il à faire c’est de pas ce y a de mieux , ne nous égarer au milieu d’hypothèses aventureuses. Nous connaître moitié la ne pouvons qu’une de vérité ; mais, cette moitié-là, cherchons du moins à la dégager de notre mieux. Ainsi, peu importe ce qu’ont été les cartes en Asie aux temps fabuleux de leur origine. Nous ne les connaissons que du jour où les Bohémiens les introduisent en Europe, et leur histoire certaine ne peut être que le récit de leurs aventures sur la terre européenne. II. Origine orientale des cartes. Les cartes sont venues de l’Orient et ont été in- troduites par les en Europe Bohémiens. Soit ; mais il faudrait d’abord prouver cela. O mes lecteurs, et vous surtout, ô mes lectrices, vous ne vous doutez pas des ennuis que je vous évite en lisant pour vous les pièces du procès. En face, sous ce poudroiement de rayons, les maisons de la rue de Rome se brouillaient, s' effaçaient, légères. à gauche, les marquises des halles couvertes ouvraient leurs porches géants, aux vitrages enfumés, celle des grandes lignes, immense, où l' oeil plongeait, et que les bâtiments de la poste et de la bouillotterie séparaient des autres, plus petites, celles d' Argenteuil, de Versailles et de la ceinture ; tandis que le pont de l' Europe, à droite, coupait de son étoile de fer la tranchée, que l' on voyait reparaître et filer au-delà, jusqu' au tunnel des Batignolles. Et, en bas de la fenêtre même, occupant tout le vaste champ, les trois doubles voies qui sortaient du pont se ramifiaient, s' écartaient en un éventail dont les branches de métal, multipliées, innombrables, allaient se perdre sous les marquises.

    The Human Comedy Scenes from Parisian Life Part VII By Honore De Balzac COUSIN BETTY One day, about the middle of July 1838, one of the carriages, then lately introduced to Paris cabstands, and known as Milords, was driving down the Rue de l’Universite, conveying a stout man of middle height in the uniform of a captain of the National Guard. Among the Paris crowd, who are supposed to be so clever, there are some men who fancy themselves infinitely more attractive in uniform than in their ordinary clothes, and who attribute to women so depraved a taste that they believe they will be favorably impressed by the aspect of a busby and of military accoutrements. The countenance of this Captain of the Second Company beamed with a self-satisfaction that added splendor to his ruddy and somewhat chubby face. The halo of glory that a fortune made in business gives to a retired tradesman sat on his brow, and stamped him as one of the elect of Paris—at least a retired deputy-mayor of his quarter of the town. And you may be sure that the ribbon of the Legion of Honor was not missing from his breast, gallantly padded a la Prussienne. Proudly seated in one corner of the milord, this splendid person let his gaze wander over the passers-by, who, in Paris, often thus meet an ingratiating smile meant for sweet eyes that are absent. The vehicle stopped in the part of the street between the Rue de Bellechasse and the Rue de Bourgogne, at the door of a large, newly-build house, standing on part of the court-yard of an ancient mansion that had a garden.

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. ---------------------------- Lara Fiorani 2 ABSTRACT This thesis reviews Roberto Calasso’s Le nozze di Cadmo e Armonia (1988) and demonstrates that thematic and formal elements of this text allow us to to cast a post- modern and poststructuralist light on his theorization of ‘absolute literature’ – a declaration of faith in the power of literature which may appear to clash with the late twentieth century postmodern and poststructuralist climate responsible for concepts such as la mort de l’auteur. The importance of these findings lies in their going against Calasso’s claim that he never needed to use the word ‘postmodern’ and his complete silence on contemporary literary criticism, as well as on most contemporary authors. Calasso’s self-representation (interviews, criticism and the themes of the part-fictional work-in-progress) acknowledges as influences ancient Greek authors, both canonical and marginal; French décadence; the finis Austriae; Marxism; Nietzsche; Hindu mythology and Aby Warburg. These influences are certainly at work in Le nozze, however they may be employed to subvert Calasso’s self-presentation. I have explored in detail the representations of literature emerging from Le nozze, and shown that they allow the identification in Calasso’s texts of elements confirming his fascination with poststructuralism, in particular with the thought of Jacques Derrida, despite the complete silence on this philosopher throughout Calasso’s work.
