W. E. B. Du Bois at the Center: from Science, Civil Rights Movement, to Black Lives Matter
The British Journal of Sociology 2017 Volume 68 Issue 1 W. E. B. Du Bois at the center: from science, civil rights movement, to Black Lives Matter Aldon Morris Abstract I am honoured to present the 2016 British Journal of Sociology Annual Lecture at the London School of Economics. My lecture is based on ideas derived from my new book, The Scholar Denied: W.E.B. Du Bois and the Birth of Modern Sociology. In this essay I make three arguments. First, W.E.B. Du Bois and his Atlanta School of Sociology pioneered scientific sociology in the United States. Second, Du Bois pioneered a public sociology that creatively combined sociology and activism. Finally, Du Bois pioneered a politically engaged social science relevant for contemporary political struggles including the contemporary Black Lives Mat- ter movement. Keywords: W. E. B. Du Bois; Atlanta School; scientific sociology; sociological theory; sociological discrimination and marginalization Innovative science of society There is an intriguing, well-kept secret, regarding the founding of scientific soci- ology in America. The first school of American scientific sociology was founded by a black professor located in a small, economically poor, racially segregated black university. At the dawn of the twentieth century – from 1898 to 1910 – the black sociologist, and activist, W.E.B. Du Bois, developed the first scientific school of sociology at a historic black school, Atlanta University. It is a monumental claim to argue Du Bois developed the first scientific school of sociology in America. Indeed, my purpose in writing The Scholar Denied was to shift our understanding of the founding, over a hundred years ago, of one of the social sciences in America. -
A History of Mixed-Race Women in the United States During the Early Twentieth Century

Abstract Often homogenised into broader narratives of African-American history, the historical experience of mixed-race women of black-white descent forms the central research focus of this thesis. Examining the lives of such women offers a valuable insight into how notions of race, class, gender and physical aesthetics were understood, articulated and negotiated throughout the United States during the early-twentieth century. Through an analysis of wide-ranging primary source material, from letters, diaries and autobiographies to advertisements, artwork and unpublished poetry, this thesis provides an interdisciplinary contribution to the field of Critical Mixed Race Studies, and African- American history. It builds on existing interpretations of the Harlem Renaissance by considering the significance of mixed-racial heritage on the formation of literature produced by key individuals over the period. Moreover, this research reveals that many of the visual and literary sources typically studied in isolation in fact informed one another, and had a profound impact on how factors such as beauty, citizenship, and respectability intersected, and specifically influenced the lives of mixed-race women. -

Es profesor de Sociología e integrante del Committee on Social Thought en la Universidad de Chicago. También es miembro titular de la Berlin-Branderburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften y participante no residente del Swedisch Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences. Fue investigador del Instituto Max Planck de Berlín, del Indiana Institute for Advanced Study y del Wissenschaftskolleg de Berlín. In accordance with the procedure established for petitions addressed to the Council of the League of Nations under Article 147 of the Germano-Polish Convention of May 15th, 1922, concerning Upper Silesia, the Secretary-General forwarded this petition with twenty appendices, on December 21st, 1931, to the German Government for its observations. A fter having obtained from the Acting-President of the Council an extension of the time limit fixed for the presentation of its observations, the German Government forwarded them in a letter dated March 30th, 1932, accompanied by twenty-nine appendices. It is the rst of a two-part sequence required of rst year Ph.D students in the sociology department. It is a not a general introduction to the history of social or political thought. For the purposes of the course, “social theory” is work that has been inuential within the discipline of sociology. Even if you may not see much of this work directly “used” in current work, a good understanding of it is necessary for graduate students hoping to have any sort of informed understanding of how people in the discipline think, and why they think that way. Indirectly, we will also try to self-consciously develop habits of reading, thinking, and discussing the material that are intellectually productive rather than sterile, generative rather than merely “critical”, and on the whole scholarly rather than stupid. UMI 300 North Zeeb Road Ann Arbor, MI 48103 COPYRIGHT BY TERRY DALE THOMPSON 1996 ABSTRACT God's Special Way examines the relationship between Halle Pietism and the Hohenzollern monarchy in order to discern the nature and effect on Brandenburg-Prussia of that alliance. Halle Pietism was a reform movement within the Lutheran church in 17th and 18th century Germany that believed the establishment church had become too concerned with correct theology, thus they aimed at a revival of intense Biblicism, personal spirituality, and social reform. The Pietists, led by August Hermann Francke (1662-1727) , and King Friedrich Wilhelm I (rl7l3-l740) were partners in an attempt to create a Godly realm in economically strapped and politically divided Brandenburg-Prussia. In large measure the partnership produced Pietist control of Brandenburg- Prussia'a pulpits and schoolrooms, despite the opposition of another informal alliance, this between the landed nobility and the establishment Lutheran church, who hoped to maintain their own authority in the religious and political spheres. -

Berkeley: University of California Press, 2004, 314 pp. (incl. index), $24.95 ISBN 0520235959 (pbk); $65.00 ISBN 0520235940 (hbk) For many years now, Jeffrey Alexander has been – together with Richard Münch – the most fervent proponent of a neo-Parsonian approach in social theory. More than Münch, however, Alexander has distanced himself from Parsons’ own understanding of culture and attempted to integrate recent developments of cultural theory and the potential of the late-Durkheimian writings into his work. More than Parsons’ former co-author Edward Shils, Alexander is sensitive to the disruptive sides of charisma (or the sacred) and the openness of situations in which its repercussions are felt. Whereas Shmuel Eisenstadt, together with Robert Bellah perhaps the greatest student of Parsons, has devoted his life to a thorough revision of Parsonianism in the light of historical sociology, Alexander’s work focuses on the present and the recent past, on the conditions which enable the functioning of civil society and on the ‘social construction’ of moral universalism in the 20th century.1 The keyword for the most recent development of his work is ‘cultural trauma’. This concept, which is by no means plausible without further discussion, is not just seen as a useful addition to the conceptual arsenal of sociology, but as the core assumption of a far-reaching research programme.
