Ewing Reviewed by Kierra Toney 4 Issues in Race & Society | The Complete 2019 Edition Africana Demography Africana Demography: Lessons from Founders E. Franklin Frazier, W.E.B. Du Bois and the Atlanta School of Sociology Lori Latrice Martin ABSTRACT Four hundred years after the first settlement of enslaved people of Afri- can ancestry in Jamestown, Virginia, sociologists and demographers, using a host of techniques, are still trying to explain persistent dispari- ties between Black and White people in the United States, especially the lack of Black progress on a host of social and demographic outcomes. There are many theoretical and methodological challenges associated with understanding such issues as persistent antiblack violence (at the hands of both state agents and vigilantes), income and wealth inequal- ity, enduring asset poverty, school and residential segregation, the overrepresentation of Black children in under-resourced public schools, the criminalization and incarceration of Black bodies, the political dis- franchisement of Black communities, displacement through gentrifica- tion, distressed neighborhoods, and poor health outcomes for Black people across the life course, among others. What are some factors that explain the difficulties sociologists and demographers face in ade- quately studying these important social issues? Why haven’t sociolo- gists and demographers been more successful in influencing public policy to address the challenges facing Black people in America? In what ways has the inability of sociologists and demographers to posi- tively impact the lived experiences of Black people in America eroded public trust in these disciplines, and what can be done to (re)establish public trust in these disciplines? It is my contention that what is needed is a new intervention I call Africana demography, which builds upon the strengths of Black sociology and critical demography. The intervention proposed here should have the added benefit of affording recognition for many of the scholars denied their rightful place in the sociological and demographic canons.     The British Journal of Sociology 2017 Volume 68 Issue 1 W. E. B. Du Bois at the center: from science, civil rights movement, to Black Lives Matter Aldon Morris Abstract I am honoured to present the 2016 British Journal of Sociology Annual Lecture at the London School of Economics. My lecture is based on ideas derived from my new book, The Scholar Denied: W.E.B. Du Bois and the Birth of Modern Sociology. In this essay I make three arguments. First, W.E.B. Du Bois and his Atlanta School of Sociology pioneered scientific sociology in the United States. Second, Du Bois pioneered a public sociology that creatively combined sociology and activism. Finally, Du Bois pioneered a politically engaged social science relevant for contemporary political struggles including the contemporary Black Lives Mat- ter movement. Keywords: W. E. B. Du Bois; Atlanta School; scientific sociology; sociological theory; sociological discrimination and marginalization Innovative science of society There is an intriguing, well-kept secret, regarding the founding of scientific soci- ology in America. The first school of American scientific sociology was founded by a black professor located in a small, economically poor, racially segregated black university. At the dawn of the twentieth century – from 1898 to 1910 – the black sociologist, and activist, W.E.B. Du Bois, developed the first scientific school of sociology at a historic black school, Atlanta University. It is a monumental claim to argue Du Bois developed the first scientific school of sociology in America. Indeed, my purpose in writing The Scholar Denied was to shift our understanding of the founding, over a hundred years ago, of one of the social sciences in America.

Board, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Barrier of Segregation Annabella Li Junior Division Historical Paper Historical Paper Word Count: 2498 Introduction In the United States of the late 1870s to mid-1950s, signs proclaiming “COLORED” or “WHITE” in large block letters were commonly hung in public spaces, making clear the distinction between the two categories. Indeed, in a photo taken in May 1940, titled Bus Station in Durham, North Carolina, one such sign labeling a “COLORED WAITING ROOM” looms in the background of the stark black-and-white photo.1 On May 17, 1954, the racial segregation these signs represented was ruled illegal and unconstitutional in schools for the first time by the US Supreme Court in Brown v Board of Education. This landmark case overturned previous precedents supporting segregation, thus breaking down an important barrier not only physically and legally, but also psychologically and socially, to racial equality. Lacking this barrier of segregation, the racial classes of black and white were threatened. This led to violent backlash from white supremacists and failure of schools to integrate in many places, which influenced Americans nationwide and ultimately led to the Civil Rights Movement. Origins of Segregation Though existing for years beforehand in the North,2 widespread segregation in the United States is recognized to have started barely 75 years prior to when the picture in North Carolina was taken. At that time, the North’s victory in the Civil War and the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1865 brought freedom to slaves in the South.

    REPURPOSED OR UNPURPOSED? 1 Repurposed or Unpurposed? The Evolution of Chicago Public School Buildings Closed in 2013 Nora D. Sullivan The University of Chicago April 24, 2019 Presented to the Department of Comparative Human Development in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the B.A. Degree REPURPOSED OR UNPURPOSED? 2 Abstract In 2013, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) closed 50 schools, leaving 44 school buildings to be sold and repurposed for new uses across the city. This study investigates the process of repurposing school buildings in Chicago and the extent to which these 44 buildings are still serving their respective communities. Eighteen interviews were conducted with academics, journalists, CPS personnel, community members affected by closed schools, and buyers of school buildings. The findings of this study show that chief among the factors that influence the success of repurposing these school buildings are: (1) differences in the vested interests of stakeholders in the closings and repurposing process, (2) inadequate communication regarding the process of closing and repurposing, and (3) obstacles to successful sales and repurposing. This study concludes that the influence of these factors has prevented the majority of the 44 school buildings closed in 2013 from being successfully repurposed. Introduction Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is a district composed of 644 schools serving 361,314 students as of the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year (Chicago Public Schools, 2019). Nearly 20 years ago, the enrollment of students in CPS was over 435,000. Student enrollment has dropped by 16.9% over the past two decades. This trend of declining enrollment, which mirrors the declining population of the city of Chicago, is expected to continue into the near future (Emmanuel, 2019).

CRSO WORKING PAPER NO. 239 Copies available through: Center for Research on Social Organization University of Michigan 330 Packard Street Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109 CENTER FOR RESEARCH ON SOCIAL ORGANIZATION ANNUAL REPORT, 1980-81 On the surface, the year at CRSO has looked like previous years: plenty of activity, too many people for our aging space, a great variety of projects, and a sense of . mutual support and stimulation. Below the surface, we have felt a chill. The combination of financial stringency within the university and a dramatic cutback in federal funds for social research threatens our modus vivendi. The reason is simple. We have never been rich. But over the last few years we have managed to make the most of a few substantial federally-funded research and training projects, plus a number of small subsidies from different parts of the university. Careful shepherding of our resources has made it possible to provide a hospitable environment for research which is currently unfunded. The secret has been to make sure that money coming in multiplied its effects: providing opportunities for training and research to people who were not employees or supervisors of research projects, making expensive equipment widely available, and so on. A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN FAMILIES PORTRAYED IN BLACK FAMILY TELEVISION COMEDIES BETWEEN 1980 AND 2000 Committee Chair: Charmayne Patterson, Ph.D. Dissertation dated May 2018 Research shows that black people watch more television than any other race of people, and, given that television is the most influential media tool, the content of what may affect an audience’s behavior and beliefs deserves analysis. This study examines the black family, alleged pathology, strengths that are specifically associated with them, its portrayal on television, and how television is used as a tool for socialization and influence. A content analysis of the top thirty black family shows that appeared on major network television between 1980 and 2000 was conducted to determine if the family framed was portrayed realistically. Each show analyzed was found to portray some characteristic of strong black families, attributes some media and social critics had not previously recognized or acknowledged. This study suggests that further research is warranted from black family, cultural, and media scholars, as well as social policy and i program makers, and on how television influences entire cultures to shift socially and economically. ii IS THIS BLACK ENOUGH FOR YOU?
