WAWRINKA, BERDYCH IN 2R ACTION; ZVEREV, MONFILS, ON CENTRE

 DAY 2 PREVIEW: There are 11 remaining first round singles matches on Tuesday’s schedule along with two second round matches, featuring No. 2 seed and No. 5 Tomas Berdych. There are also five first round doubles matches, including World No. 1 with countryman Nenad Zimonjic on Grandstand (second-on). This is Djokovic’s first tournament doubles appearance since last October in Beijing (w/brother Djordje).

In the first match on Centre Court, Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei takes on NextGen German teenage star Alexander Zverev, who is making his Rogers Cup debut. Zverev is coming off a semi- final in Washington and he is a career-high No. 25 in this week’s Emirates ATP Rankings. At 19 years, 3 months, Zverev is the youngest to rank in the Top 25 since (19y, 1m) on Aug. 15, 2005 at No. 15. Next on is No. 10 seed Gael Monfils against Joao Sousa of . Monfils has won two of the previous three meetings in in 2014. On Sunday, Monfils captured his sixth career ATP World Tour title in Washington, saving one match point in his 57 76 64 victory over Ivo Karlovic. The Frenchman’s best result in Canada is the quarter-finals in 2011. In the last match of the day session, another NextGen Croatian teenager Borna Coric looks to defeat Berdych for the first time (0-2) and break a nine-match losing streak against Top 10 opponents. His last win came over No. 3 Murray in the quarter-finals at 2015 Dubai. In the evening session, No. 2 Canadian faces Frenchman Jeremy Chardy for the first time. Pospisil, a semi- finalist three years ago, has slipped to No. 101 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, the first time he’s out of the Top 100 since July 7, 2013 at No. 103. Chardy is also a former Rogers Cup semi-finalist, reaching that round last year (l. to Djokovic). In the final match on, Russian brings a 3-2 head-to-head advantage against Wawrinka. Their first meeting came here in the 2R in 2007 and Youzhny won 64 64. The Russian won the last two meetings in 2010, both from a set down at ATP Masters 1000 Miami and the US Open.

In the opening match on Grandstand, qualifier Radek Stepanek, who is the oldest player in the singles draw (at 37y, 7m), squares off for the first time against No. 14 seed Benoit Paire. Djokovic and Zimonjic follow in their 1R doubles match against the wild card duo of and . The Canadian squad is looking for their first Rogers Cup match win. They have a combined 0-11 record. In the next match on, American plays Alexandr Dolgopolov for the third time (tied 1-1). Next up is , fresh off his fourth career ATP World Tour title in Umag on Sunday, against No. 15 seed , who is a career-high No. 21 in this week’s Emirates ATP Rankings. Johnson is 0-2 against the Italian. In the final match on, big-serving Ivo Karlovic takes on American teenager Taylor Fritz for the first time. Karlovic reached the final in Washington on Sunday, falling to Monfils after holding one match point.

CANADIANS START STRONG: Three of the four Canadian wild cards advanced to the second round on Monday, led by 17-year-old , who posted his first career ATP World Tour match win over No. 19-ranked 76 36 63. The No. 370-ranked left-hander was joined by and in the second round. Diez also posted his first career ATP World Tour match win over Kyle Edmund 36 63 62 while Polansky beat qualifier 46 63 60. The only Canadian to fall on opening day was to 76 64.
