DJOKOVIC, MURRAY, RAONIC HEADLINE BUSY DAY TWO

 DAY 2 PREVIEW: Three former champions return to Rogers Cup action on Tuesday as 16 singles and two doubles matches feature on Tuesday’s Order of Play. World No. 1 and three-time champion (2007, ’11-12) will hope to win the 250th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 match of his career against , while No. 2 seed and 2009-10 champion opens his Montreal campaign against . Defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who beat four Top-10 players (Djokovic, Murray, Dimitrov, Federer) en route to the 2014 title, faces Croatian teen Borna Coric, the youngest player in the draw in a match held over from Monday’s schedule. There are six other seeds in singles action today: No. 8 No. 11 , No. 12 , No. 13 , No. 14 and No. 16 as well as Canadian wild cards and . Reigning U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic is in doubles action (w/Lindstedt) while former world No. 1 makes his final appearance at the Rogers Cup (w/Kyrgios vs Monfils/Tsonga).

th  MASTERING THE MASTERS: Djokovic is one win away from his 250 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 match win. The Serb has been the standout player at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 level in recent times, winning the last five he has contested – (’14), Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo and (withdrew from ). Since falling to Federer in the SFs in last year, Djokovic is undefeated in his last 26 ATP Masters 1000 matches. The 28-year-old, who also captured his fourth Barclays ATP World Tour Finals title in November, has 24 Masters 1000 crowns, surpassing Federer (23) and second only to Nadal (27). The three-time Rogers Cup champion is the top seed in Canada for the fifth straight year. A semi-finalist in 2013 and 2010, Djokovic has a 26-5 career record in Canada, winning in Montreal twice (2007, 2011) and once (2012). The Serb has been No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings since winning the Wimbledon title in 2014; his current 58 consecutive weeks at No. 1 ties John McEnroe’s career-best streak for ninth-longest No. 1 streak and is bettered by five players – (237), Jimmy Connors (160, 84), Ivan Lendl (157, 80), (102, 82) and Lleyton Hewitt (75). This is Djokovic’s 159th week overall at No. 1, which is sixth-best. He first became No. 1 on July 4, 2011. He is looking to finish No. 1 for the fourth time in five years (2011-12, ’14).

 THIEM IN TOP FORM: will be looking to extend his recent run of form in Montreal this week. The Austrian broke into the Top 20 for the first time on Monday at No. 18 following back- to-back ATP World Tour titles at Umag (d. Sousa) and Gstaad (d. Goffin) with a semi-final run in Kitzbuhel (l. to Kohlschreiber), snapping a 10-match unbeaten run. The 21-year-old has a 29-19 record this season (7-7 on hard). Thiem reached the quarter-finals of an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event for the first time in Miami earlier this season (l. to Murray). He lost on his debut appearance in Canada last year (l. to Simon). Thiem faces qualifier and often practice partner in their third meeting of the season with the Austrian winning in Rottedam (1R) and (QF). Thiem overall leads 3-0. The duo shares the same coach, Gunther Bresnik.

 MURRAY’S GREAT ESCAPES: Tommy Robredo’s first-round victory over fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez sets up a showdown with No. 2 seed Andy Murray, who saved a combined 10 match points against the 33-year-old to win back-to-back titles in October 2014 (Shenzen, ). Murray survived five match points in both finals against Robredo, and will be keen to bounce back after losing his opening match of the North American hard court season in Washington (l. to Gabashvili in 2R).  ACE IN THE PACK: After beating in the first round, Ivo Karlovic now has 9,982 career aces to his name and needs 18 more to become just the second player since ATP records began in 1991 to reach 10,000 aces. Fellow Croatian Goran Ivanisevic currently holds the record for career aces at 10,183 in 895 matches; Karlovic is now 201 aces behind his countryman having played 526 matches, averaging 19 aces per match. Only Roger Federer (9,279 aces in 1224 matches) and (9,074 aces in 780 matches) have also passed the 9,000-ace mark. Earlier this season in Halle 36-year-old Karlovic set a new record for the most aces in a three-set match, hitting 45 past Tomas Berdych to reach the semi-finals (l. to Federer).  Verdasco is making his eighth appearance at the Rogers Cup, and his first since 2011 (l. 2R to Tipsarevic). He reached 3R in 2006 (l. to Gasquet), ‘07 (l. to Dancevic) and ‘09 (l. to Roddick). th  Verdasco is looking for his 100 career ATP World Tour Masters 1000 match win. His current record stands at 99-95, including one final appearance (2010 Monte-Carlo, l. to Nadal).  Verdasco arrives in Montreal after consecutive first-round defeats on clay in Bastad (l. to Almagro) and (l. to eventual champion Nadal).  Verdasco reached semi-finals in Quito (l. to F Lopez) in February and Houston in April (l. to Querrey), both on clay. He reached his first ATP World Tour final in Estoril in May and beat Milos Raonic en route to 4R at Wimbledon (l. to Gasquet in both).  Kyrgios is 2-3 against Top 10 opposition in 2015 (3-8 career), registering wins against No. 2 Federer (Madrid 2R) and No. 8 Raonic (Wimbledon 3R).  Kyrgios ended his breakthrough 2014 season as one of two teenagers (also No. 91 Coric) in Top 100, finishing at No. 52 – up from No. 186 the previous year.

 Coric is making his Rogers Cup debut. He is the youngest player in the Montreal singles draw.  Coric will be looking to bounce back today after consecutive defeats by in July, in Umag (QF) and Hamburg (1R).  Coric is the highest-ranked of the four teenagers the Emirates ATP Rankings (No. 36; also Chung, Kokkinakis and Zverev). His 19 Tour wins to date are the best of any teenager this season.  The 18-year-old’s performance of the year came in Dubai, where he beat world No. 3 Andy Murray 6-1 6-3 in the QF before losing to Roger Federer. It was Coric’s second win against Top 5 opposition (d. Nadal in 2014 QF).  Coric finished the 2014 season as the youngest player (18) and one of two teenagers (Kyrgios) in the Top 100 Emirates ATP Rankings after rising 276 places during year.  Tsonga reached the SF on three of his four visits to the Rogers Cup, exiting in the final four in 2009 (l. to Murray) and 2011 (l. to Djokovic) before winning in 2014 (d. Federer), a run that saw the Frenchman beat four Top 10 players (3R Djokovic, QF Murray, SF Dimitrov, F Federer).  Tsonga is the first Frenchman to win the Canadian title in its history, dating back to 1881, also becoming the first ATP Masters 1000 winner ranked outside the Top 10 since No. 26 Ivan Ljubicic at Indian Wells in 2010.  Tsonga’s 2014 victory ended a decade of dominance in Canada from the Big Four of Novak Djokovic (champion in 2007, ’11-12), Roger Federer (2004, ‘06), Andy Murray (2009-10) and (2005, ‘08, ‘13). It was the Frenchman’s second ATP Masters 1000 triumph (Paris 2008, d. Nalbandian).  On his only other outing in 2012 he fell to fellow Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in his opening match.  Tsonga returns to action for the first time since playing QF for vs Great Britain (l. to Murray).  After missing the Australian Open with an arm injury, Tsonga reached the SF at Roland Garros for the second time in his career (l. to Wawrinka; also 2013).  Tsonga finished 2014 as the No. 1 Frenchman and inside the Top 15 for the seventh year in a row.

 Djokovic is the top seed in Canada for the fifth straight season. The world No. 1 and three-time former champion (2007, ’11-12) lost to eventual champion Tsonga in 3R in 2014. th  Djokovic can win his 250 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 match today. Only Roger Federer (321) and Rafael Nadal (294) have more ATP Masters match wins. th  Djokovic’s ATP Masters 1000 title in Rome was 24 of his career, surpassing Federer’s 23 titles and leaving only Nadal, with 27, ahead of him. The Serb is bidding to win a record-equaling fifth ATP Masters 1000 title of season (Djokovic 2011, Nadal 2013).  Djokovic has won the last five ATP Masters events he has entered (2014 Paris, 2015 Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo and Rome – withdrew from Madrid). th  Djokovic claimed the 50 ATP World Tour title of his career in Indian Wells (d.  Karlovic, the oldest player in the singles draw in Montreal, is playing his seventh Coupe Rogers (5-6) since making his debut in 2004. Opened with 18 aces in 64 76 win over Jerzy Janowicz on Monday. The Croat’s best result came in 2011 when he reached 3R (l. to Berdych). Last year reached 2R (l. to Gasquet).  Karlovic has the most aces to his name of any active player (9,982, second only to Goran Ivanisevic’s 10,183) since the ATP began keeping aces in 1991. Has most aces on tour in 2015 (987), and in Halle in June hit the most aces in a three-set match (45 in a QF win over Berdych).  Karlovic has reached the semi-finals or better at five events in 2015, reaching the final in Newport (l. to Ram) and winning his sixth career title in Delray Beach (d. Young).  Karlovic is one of only three players to beat Djokovic in 2015 (also Federer, Wawrinka), downing the world No. 1 in the QFs of the season opener in Doha.  Karlovic ended 2014 as the oldest player in year-end Top 50, finishing in the Top 30 for the first time since 2008.  Raonic reached the final the last time the Rogers Cup was played in Montreal (2013, l. to Nadal). Playing his sixth Rogers Cup (8-5), the Canadian No. 1 has reached QF or better in past three seasons (2012, l. QF to Isner; 2014, l. QF to F Lopez).  Raonic is playing for first time since his 3R Wimbledon exit (l. to Kyrgios). The Canadian No. 1 withdrew from Roland Garros in May after undergoing surgery May 13 for a pinched nerve in his right foot.  Raonic reached final of his first event of the season in Brisbane, losing to Federer in what proved to be the Swiss’s 1,000th ATP World Tour match win.  Raonic has a 2-7 record against Top 10 opposition in 2015, with wins over No. 5 Nishikori (Brisbane QF) and No. 3 Nadal (Indian Wells QF).  Raonic became the first Canadian to end a season in the Top 10 in 2014 after winning a personal- best 49 matches and capturing a sixth career title – and first at ATP 500 level – in Washington (d. He has never advanced past 3R, reaching that round in 2003, ’05, ’14)  Robredo arrives in Canada after losing to Benoit Paire in back-to-back tournaments (Bastad in final and Hamburg 2R).  Robredo ended 2014 at No. 17 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, his highest finish to a season since No. 10 in 2007. He reached three finals (Umag, l. to Cuevas; Shenzen, Valencia, both l. to Murray) and posted his 500th career win (d. Chardy in Shenzen SF).  Robredo is one of seven ATP World Tour Masters 1000 winners in Montreal this week. The Spaniard won the 2006 Hamburg title (d. Stepanek). Qualified into main draw over the weekend, winning two three setters (d. Sela, Falla)  Dolgopolov arrives in Montreal having reached the 3R in Washington (l. to Zverev).  Dolgopolov’s season to-date has been highlighted by a SF appearance in Nottingham (l. to Querrey) and QF runs in Delray Beach (l. to Young) and Acapulco (l. to Nishikori).  Dolgopolov finished 2014 as the No. 1 Ukrainian at No. 23 in the rankings, ending the season in the Top 25 for the third time in past four years.  Dimitrov, last year’s semi-finalist (l. to champion Tsonga), is playing his third Rogers Cup (3-2).  Dimitrov arrives in Montreal following a 2R exit in Washington (l. to Johnson), his first tournament since splitting with coach . Johan Ortegren began working with Dimitrov on a trial basis in Washington.
