181 IN THE FAMILY... T

N At the 2001 US Open, the , Venus and Serena, helped shape one of the great - E

M est nights in women’s tennis history. They became the first sisters to play for a U.S. singles champi - O A F onship and did so in the first Grand Slam tournament final scheduled for a prime-time national N N I R

U network telecast. The match, which Venus Williams won, 6-2, 6-4, was the most-watched program

O on U.S. television on that September 8 night. T But while the Williamses may have staged the most famous sibling duel at the US Open, they are hardly alone. From the Atkinsons to the Maleevas and from the Halls to the Sanchezes, brothers and sisters have a long history of facing off at the US Open. And of teaming up. Serena and Venus also paired to win the women's doubles crown, and the storied American brother S &

pairing of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan have won a doubles title together and faced each other in D Y N T

N S HELLO MOTHER, HELLO FATHER

Since the beginning of the seeding system in 1927, only one mother-and-daughter combination has been R S E

able to earn seeding. Mrs. Bundy, the national T C A O singles champion in 1904 and first non-British titlist at T I R S D Wimbledon in 1905, was seeded in 1928 and 1929. Her T I S C

S daughter, Dorothy Bundy Cheney, was seeded 10 times & between 1937 and 1955. No father-and-son combinations have ever achieved the distinction of both earning seeds. However, at the 1998 US Open, put the Stolle men in the US Open record book. Stolle and partner defeated and Daniel R P Nestor for the 1998 US Open men’s doubles title. Stolle E L C A O

thereby joined his father, three-time U.S. doubles Y R E D champion Fred Stolle, to become the only father-son R combination to win U.S. doubles cham pion ships in their S careers. Dorothy Bundy “Dodo” Cheney

198 BEST FINISH BY WILD CARDS (OPEN ERA)

Wild cards are players who did not enter and/or whose ranking would not otherwise allow T O

them direct entry into the main draw (or into the qualifying event in the case of qualifying wild U R I N cards) and are included in the draw at the sole discretion of the respective tournament committee. N F A O M E

Men’s Singles N

Five-time US Open champion Jimmy Connors has the best showing of any men’s wild-card recipi - T ent a t the US Open, reaching the 1991 semifinals. Connors, whose ranking had sunk as low as No. 93 6 earlier in the year, did not gain direct entry into the main draw. Ranked No. 174 at the start of the US Open, Connors began his epic run with a five-set win over Patrick McEnroe after trailing two sets F to none. After straight-sets wins over Michel Schapers and No. 10 seed Karel Novacek, Connors w on G A R C

a tie-break in the decisive fifth set against Aaron Krickstein in the fourth round. He defeated Paul O I L U I

Haarhuis in the quarterfinals before losing to No. 4 seed in the semifinals. T N Y D

In 2005, became the only other man to advance to the quarterfinals of the US Open & S as a . Blake was ranked No. 107 at the time of the 2005 US Open entry deadline, but jumped up to No. 49 by the start of the tournament after reaching the finals of two Emirates Airline US Open Series events (winning New Haven and losing to Andy Roddick in , D.C.). He opened with a straight-sets win over No. 28 seed in the first round, then knocked off in the second. Blake posted the biggest win of his career in the third round when he A E C upset No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. He then knocked off No. 19 seed V T E I N in four sets to set up a quarterfinal meeting with No. 7 seed Andre Agassi. That match would go V T I T S down as one of the most exciting matches in the history of the US Open after Agassi rallied from a I

E & two-sets-to-none deficit to win, 3-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-6(6). (For more information on the Blake-Agassi S match, go to “On this Day in US Open History” for Sept. 7, in the Historical Records section.)

Ladies’ Singles In 2009, Kim Clijsters became the first-ever wild card to win the US Open singles title, defeat -

ing No. 3 Venus Williams in the fourth round, No. 2 Serena Williams in the semifinals and No. 9 H I S

Caroline Wozniacki in the final. Clijsters was the 2005 US Open women's singles champion but T O

retired in 2007 to start a family. She came out of retirement in July 2009 and had played only two R tournaments prior to the US Open. As such, she did not have a ranking and needed a wild card Y to gain entry into the main draw. Previously, the best finish by a women's wild card was shared by Frenchwoman Severine Bremond and two former champions, Serena Williams and Martina Hingis, all of whom reached the fourth round of the US Open. of the United States also reached the fourth round as a wild card in 2013. 213 TIE-BREAK MATCHES The tie-break made its US Open and Grand Slam debut in 1970 as a nine-point tie-break, with the T first player to 5 winning the tie-break and a winner-take-all point played at 4-4. The tie-break switched N E to its current form (known as the 12-point tie-break) in 1975, with the winner needing 7 points to M O A F secure the tie-break but having to win by at least two points. N N I R Since the introduction of the tie-break system in 1970, a maximum of 65 games is possible in a five- U

O set match (13 games per set including the tie-break) and a maximum of 39 games is possible in a T three-setter. Three men’s matches (two singles, one doubles) have approached the 65-game maximum and seven matches (two women’s singles, three men’s doubles, one women’s doubles and one mixed doubles) have reached the 39-game, three-set maximum. (Note: Men’s doubles switched to a best- of-three sets format in 1993, giving men’s doubles a 39-game maximum from that point forward.) S &

Seeding began at the U.S. Championships in 1922 as 16 American and seven international U R I N entrants were placed in the draw as seeds in the men’s tournament. Eight women were seeded in N F A O the 1922 women’s singles draw. M E

Men’s seeding at the U.S. Championships comprised both American and international seeds, N no more than eight in each category, until 1956, when separate seeding was eliminated. From T 1956 until the start of the Open Era in 1968, only eight men were seeded in the 128-player draw. In 1968, 16 men were seeded in the singles draw, a number that expanded to 32 seeds in 2001. The exceptions during this time were in 1970, when 20 players were seeded in a field of 108, and F in 1971, when only eight players were seeded in a field of 128. G A R C

Women’s seeding at the U.S. Championships also consisted of American and international O I L U seeds until 1956. From 1956 until 1963, the women’s singles draw consisted of eight seeds, while I T N Y D

the 1964 event featured 12 seeded women. From 1968 until 1975, eight women were seeded in & a singles draw of 64 participants. In 1976, the women’s singles draw expanded to 96 players and S the number of seeds increased to 16 for the first time. The US Open seeded 16 women from 1976 to 2000 with the lone exception of 1977, when there were only 12 seeds. The women’s draw increased uniformly to 128 players in 1981. 227 TOP TWO SEEDS MEETING IN FINAL MEN T N

E Since the introduction of regular seeding in 1922, there have been 35 matches in the men’s singles M

O final that have matched the two top seeds in some combination. The combination possibilities A F N N were presented because from 1922 to 1955, there were two separate seeding lists (except in 1940 I R

U and 1943). One was for U.S. players and the other for international. Some players residing in the O

T U.S. for some length of time appeared on both lists at different times ( being an example). In seven of the finals listed here, one or more of the players was on the international seed list. Twice, in 1926 and in 1933, the top two international seeds met in the final match. Including the two instances of the No. 1 international seed meeting the No. 2 international se ed in the final, No. 1 has won 16 of 30 matches against No. 2. The No. 1 U.S. seed and the No. 1 S &

D international seed met in the men’s final five times, with the U.S. No. 1 winning three times. Y N T I U L I O C R A G F 2013 – Rafael Nadal (2) d.
