Murumets President and Chief Executive Officer Kelly Murumets assumed the role of President and CEO of Tennis Canada in March 2014. She joined Tennis Canada after serving for seven years as President and CEO of ParticipACTION, the national voice of physical activity and sport participation in Canada. Prior to her role with ParticipACTION, Ms. Murumets was president of a publicly traded U.S. telecommunications company, where she oversaw the integration of four bankrupt/nearly bankrupt companies into one thriving organization that ranked 7th in Deloitte’s Technology Fast 50 Pro- gram. Throughout her career, she has advised leaders from Canada, the United States, South America and Europe on how to develop focused strategies and realize results within their organizations. Ms. Murumets is a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO-WPO) as well as a member of the Wilfrid Laurier University Board of Governors. She has worked and volunteered for the Children’s Aid Society and Covenant House, and speaks regularly to organizations around the world. She holds an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, a Master of Social Work from Wilfrid Laurier University and a BA from Bishop’s University. Among her many recognitions, Ms. Murumets was named as one of CAAWS Most Influential Women in Sport and Physical Activity (2007, 2009, 2011 and 2012), CBC’s 10 Most Influential Figures in Sport (2012), and Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 (2009) and is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2013). Ms. Murumets brings her passion for sport and physical activity to her personal pursuits. She enjoys tennis, skiing and scuba diving, and has summited Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Rainier. She resides in Toronto, Ontario with her partner, Roy Graydon. Eugène Lapierre Senior VP, Quebec Professional Tennis and Tournament Director, Rogers Cup presented by National Bank Montreal Tournament Director of Rogers Cup presented by National Bank in Montreal since 2001, Eugène Lapierre is responsible for professional tennis in Quebec. Recently, he was named one of the 25 most influential Quebecers in the world of sport by the Journal de Montréal. Mr. Lapierre has been involved with tennis since his youth. As a player, he dominated the province of Quebec in the U16 category (1972) and U21 category (1974) in addition to ranking No. 4 in the open division. He has also acted as a coach and club professional. For the last 20 years, he has played a role in all of the major tennis events in Quebec. 8 From 1983 to 1993, Mr. Lapierre was the Technical Director for Tennis Quebec. In 1987, he launched a mini-tennis project that allowed kids to play tennis in schools by providing all necessary equipment (mini racquets and balls). He then took over the reins of national and international tournaments in Quebec until 1988. After being named Co-Tournament Director of the Canadian Open Tennis Championships in 1991, he became the lone man in charge in 2001, taking over from Richard Legendre. Since joining the Tennis Canada team, Mr. Lapierre has overseen numerous initiatives that have contributed to the growth and popularity of tennis in Quebec as well as the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank. In 2001, he was responsible for the addition of 2000 seats and 13 corporate suites inside Uniprix Stadium, he also had 4 brand new indoor courts built and spearheaded the construction of the new National Bank Court in 2004 (4,500 seating capacity). The new secondary court made the Montreal event the only tournament outside the Grand Slams to sell tickets for a second show court. Since being named tournament director of the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank, tournament attendance has grown from 155,000 to over 200,000 spectators. He was recently honored by Tourism Montreal, who presented him with the “Grand Ulysse” prize, an award that recognizes a Montreal personality who has greatly contributed to the growing influence of the city on an international scale. A native of Granby, Mr. Lapierre lives in Montreal with his daughter Éléonore. Hatem Mcdadi Senior Vice-President, Tennis Development Hatem McDadi has been senior vice-president, tennis development since 2012. He joined Tennis Canada as director of player development in 1999 and moved to become the vice-president, tennis development in 2004. Mr. McDadi came from the private sector where he was the co-founder of a top Canadian tennis academy and director / part owner of Club Management Group (CMG) Tennis Inc., a tennis club manage- ment company based in Brampton, Ontario that ran two indoor clubs and a number of outdoor summer community clubs. Mr. McDadi is responsible for all facets of sport development including high performance, coaching, community, facilities, wheelchair, offi- ciating and competitive structure. A key liaison with the provincial tennis associations, Mr. McDadi has been part of a team that helped in the development of Tennis Canada’s strategic plan that has seen historic growth in high performance results, community and club participation. A certified Level IV coach, Mr. McDadi was a member of the Canadian coaching team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics when the team of Daniel Nestor and Sebastien Lareau captured the gold medal. He also served as Nestor’s and Rene Simpson’s personal coach over the years. Mr. Mc- Dadi was Canada’s Fed Cup coach from 1992-98.

Each year the activities and events of the European Handball Federation get bigger and greater. 2005 saw an intense year of competitions, events, meetings, courses, projects, activities and new initiatives. The 2005 EHF Annual Report takes us back over the highlights of the European handball year, focusing on the wide-spectrum of activities within the EHF event compendium. Introduction The modern version of the game (official name of Lawn Tennis) as we recognize it today was designed and patented by Major Walter Clopton Wingfield in 1873. Two years later in 1875, the official rules of the game were drawn up by Marylebone Cricket Club, and two years later in 1877, Wimbledon began on a grass surface as the first official championships. All four grand slam events have been played on a grass surface. Wimbledon is the only grand slam event played on a grass court today and has always been played on a grass court surface. The French Open began in 1891 on a grass surface and remained on grass until 1928 when the surface was changed to clay. The US Open began in 1881 on a grass surface; until it was changed to clay from 1975-1977 and from 1978 has been played on a hard court surface. Finally, the Australian Open began in 1905 on a grass surface and remained on grass until 1988 when the surface was changed to a hard court. There has been a change in the proportion of tournaments played on different court surfaces from 1877 to 2010. Firstly, for the first 14 years of the game, all tournaments (grand slam and non grand slam) were played on grass. Secondly, for the first 101 years of the game all tournaments were played on the natural surfaces of grass and clay. Thirdly, according to the ITF, until the early 1970’s, the majority of tournaments were played on grass including three out of the four grand slams.

    HOW CHINESE NEW MEDIA CONSTRUCT ELITE FEMALE ATHLETES: GENDER, NATIONALISM, AND INDIVIDUALISM by QINGRU XU (Under the Direction of Dr. Peggy J. Kreshel) Around the world, sport is principally organized around masculinity. Women are often afforded limited access to sports participation, situated as “others” in a male-dominated domain. This gender inequality is mirrored in sports media; selective representations have a tremendous influence on people’s perception and understanding of sport, athletes, and society. In this study, I examined media representations of two Chinese female athletes of different status—specialized athlete, Ding Ning, and professional athlete, Li Na— in China, a nation in the midst of political/economic/cultural transformation and a sports reform initiative. Analyzing stories drawn from two Chinese web portals, I focused particularly on how gender, nationalism, and collectivism/individualism entered into media representations to determine if there were differences in the portrayals of these two female athletes. The portraits that emerged were very distinctive. A textual analysis revealed significant differences in each of the three conceptual areas. A fourth theme, which I have identified as “monetary value” also emerged. Possible explanations for and implications of differences in the media portrayals of the two athletes at this particular historical moment in Chinese society were provided.
