THE AUSTRALIAN DAVIS CUP TENNIS FOUNDATION annual report 2011 3 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It is my pleasure to welcome all members to the fortieth Annual General meeting and with much pride I present to you for consideration and adoption the fortieth Annual Report of the Foundation incorporating the financial statements as at 30 June 2011.

This last year saw Australia participate in only one Davis Cup Tie and that was a World Group Play-off Tie against Belgium in on the weekend of 17-19 September, 2010. Unfortunately the team of , , , and was not successful against the versatile Belgians with winning both his singles and clinching the vital fifth rubber in straight sets.

This confined Australia, once again to the Asia Oceania Group 1 for 2011, and the draw gave Australia a bye in the first round. In November, 2010 retired as Captain after nine years with, no doubt, the highlight being a Davis Cup triumph in 2003 when Australia defeated in .

Shortly afterwards Patrick Rafter was appointed as Captain and he has started on a successful note by leading Australia back to the World Group Play off with a win over China in July, 2011.

Although it occurred after the close of the financial year under review, I should nevertheless congratulate Sam Stosur on her great victory in winning the US Open in the most trying of conditions. Her play was matched by her manner; absolutely magnificent and I am sure there is more success to come as the years roll by.

As reported in our recent newsletter the Board of the Foundation has undergone some significant changes with two long serving Directors retiring in recent months. Tennis administrator extra-ordinaire, having served at the State level, then the National level, becoming president of the LTAA in the 80’s, and then becoming president of the world body, the ITF for nine years before moving back to Melbourne and serving 10 years with the ADCTF. Des O’Brien our esteemed treasurer for 17 years also bowed out at a recent board meeting. Des is one of those officials who quietly goes about his business, working tirelessly behind the scenes but playing a very important part in the Foundation’s success. A Victorian who has been active in the local and state tennis scene, Des you have served the foundation diligently, now enjoy your retirement.

With retirements, replacements must come about! It is with great pleasure that I confirm that two long-standing tennis officials have accepted appointments as directors.

Robert Hinton , Partner in a legal firm in Melbourne has been in tennis administration for over 20 years and was President of Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club for a number of years. His expertise both on and off the court will be a welcomed addition to the Board.

Robert Jamieson , a former President of Australian Chess Federation has also had a wealth of experience in tennis administration and has taken up the position of Treasurer. Robert has quickly adjusted to the role and I am confident the Foundation will benefit from his experience.

The administration of the Foundation has been upgraded with the appointment of Robert Parker as a part time Marketing Administrator. Robert will work closely with Judy Pullyblank , who continues to well serve the Foundation with her pleasant and

THE AUSTRALIAN DAVIS CUP TENNIS FOUNDATION annual report 2011 4 courteous manner. With the support that Judy also receives from her husband Alan, I believe our support staff has strengthened the secretariat to be the best ever.

In thanking Judy for her wonderful and diligent work, I welcome Robert most heartily. His years of serving Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club as General Manager will no doubt be a significant help in his duties with the Foundation.

Two other men have contributed to the Foundation over the years, I refer to Rod May who handles the ticketing for our members and Ray Briggs who edits our Newsletters. I thank both gentlemen for a job well done.

Of course, the Foundation could not function without an Honorary Secretary and in Graeme Cumbrae-Stewart , we have one of the best. His knowledge, experience and attention to detail is invaluable, not only to the Board but also to the broader Membership. On behalf of all members I thank Graeme most sincerely for his dedication to his post.

In closing may I also extend my thanks to all other Directors for their support. Each and every one has contributed to the interests of the Foundation.

Neale A Fraser AO, MBE 22nd September 2011

THE AUSTRALIAN DAVIS CUP TENNIS FOUNDATION annual report 2011 5 MEDIBANK INTERNATIONAL, SYDNEY 2011 Malcolm Bergmann, our Membership Officer in New South Wales, has reported that members’ interest in this event remains high with an ever increasing number of applicants for the complimentary tickets which has so generously made available for the benefit of our Members who reside in NSW.

BRISBANE INTERNATIONAL, 2011 Once again, many of our members living in took advantage of the “Priority Access” booking facility by ordering their tickets for this event on-line through Ticketek before they officially went on sale to the general public. We are indebted to Tennis Australia for its tangible recognition of the support provided by the Foundation and its members throughout Queensland.

APPRECIATION Our President, , continues to provide inspirational leadership and it is indeed most appropriate that we should place on record our admiration of his total dedication to tennis, particularly Davis Cup tennis and even more so, to our Foundation.

It is also with sincere gratitude that we acknowledge the supreme efforts of Malcolm and Glenice Bergmann who once again worked so assiduously to allocate and distribute approximately 800 complimentary tickets for access to the first or second days’ play in the Medibank International 2011.

Finally, we remain forever grateful to Ian Jane for his continuing interest in the welfare and enjoyment of all who participate as a member of his much sought after touring parties that are associated with Davis Cup ties being played overseas.

NOTES ON THE DRAW FOR THE DAVIS CUP COMPETITION Extract from the regulations governing choice of ground: Regulation 22. Choice of Ground. (iii) If one Nation has been entitled to choice for its tie with another Nation in the 1970 Competition, or in any later Competition, the latter shall have the choice on the occasion of the next meeting with that Nation. If this is not applicable, then (iv) Choice shall be decided by lot (see regulation 19 (a)). (The foregoing will not apply in the next tie between Australia and India).

THE AUSTRALIAN DAVIS CUP TENNIS FOUNDATION annual report 2011 6 NEW MEMBERS

To those members who have joined the Foundation since this time last year, we say ‘thank- you’ and we take this opportunity to explain to you that the lion’s share of our annual income is represented by membership subscription income. This money, in turn, is included in the funds that we pass directly to Tennis Australia each year to offset the huge cost of conducting selected portions of its ambitious Junior Player Development programs.

Our Directors are pleased to welcome the following people who have applied for and been granted membership since the date of our last Annual Report:

BARNS John L HEADLAND Barry PARKER Robert W BLACK Margaret G HINTON Robert T PETALE Ozden BLACKSHAW Caroline J IACUONE Gina RICHARDS Steven BOYDELL Judith (Life Member) JAMIESON Robert M SYZDEK Alan P BURNS Karen JOHNSON Janette A TILEY Craig DAVIS Jon JOHNSON Valentine M TURNER John DUDDY Nicholas A KACHEL Chris P TURNER Rodney W FLEMING Donna KAIN David G WEARE Katy FROST Frederick J LAITMAN Anne WILLIAMS Geoffrey G FULLER Kel MARTIN Neal WOOLCOCK Jane M GOFFAGE Beryl M MASON William B WOOLCOCK Warren G GRAHAM Anna L NICOL Judy

RETIREMENT OF DIRECTORS Des O’Brien During the year our long serving Treasurer, Des O’Brien retired. He will be sorely missed. The quality of his work, the enthusiasm he brought to the Board Room, his dedication to his responsibilities and love of the Foundation, made Des O’Brien a great Office-bearer.

He is the ideal sports loving Australian who is willing to contribute on and off the sports field. His love of tennis combined with his interests in Athletics made Des an active sportsman. In his younger days he competed at Stawell’s Easter Athletic Carnival for a number of years and he tasted success in the 60’s by winning the prestigious Mile event.

Administrative positions were offered and terms as President of his local Church tennis club, SJCTC Heidelberg (over 20 years spread over two terms and still going), and Auditor of the Victorian Tennis Association 1980-2002 led to his appointment as Treasurer of our Foundation, a position he held for 17 years.

A great friend to many members and very popular with all which made Des one of the most respected Administrators to serve the Foundation.

Brian Tobin As a player, Brian was ranked among our top 10 in Australia from 1956-62 but his most lasting contribution to tennis occurred off the court where he helped take the game into uncharted waters. A visionary leader of the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia from 1983-89, he played a pivotal role in the development of a state-of-the-art tennis centre, revitalizing the and restoring it to world prominence. He served as

THE AUSTRALIAN DAVIS CUP TENNIS FOUNDATION annual report 2011 7 President of the International Tennis Federation from 1991-99, displaying superb diplomatic skills.

Brian brought these same skills and vision to our board where he served with distinction for over 10 years. His wise counsel and expertise will be greatly missed.

APPOINTMENT OF NEW DIRECTORS At the Foundation’s board meeting on 16 May 2011 two new members were appointed to fill the vacancies contemporaneously left by Brian Tobin and Des O’Brien.

Robert Hinton has been involved in Tennis Administration for over 20 years, at both Club and State level. He was a regular Pennant player with Royal South Yarra Tennis Club for over 18 years. Early in that time as a player he was invited onto the Club Captain’s committee. He became Captain, Vice-President and then President of the Club from 2006 until 2009.

During his time as Captain of Royal South Yarra, he guided the return of the Club to the top level of Victorian Tennis and saw both the Club’s men’s and women’s teams securing State Pennant victories. He also represented the Club on the Tennis Victoria Council for many years. Robert remains passionate about the encouragement and advancement of young tennis players, and during his time on Committee, he expanded the scholarship scheme at Royal South Yarra significantly.

Robert is a partner of a legal firm in Melbourne and is married with three daughters.

Robert Jamieson has joined the board to take over the role of treasurer. He is an experienced administrator who is currently treasurer of Eastern Region Tennis Inc. He is also a member of the Tennis Victoria Audit and Governance Committee, the Player Development Focus Group and the Disciplinary Tribunal.

Robert’s other interest is chess, at which he has been Australian champion and has served as President of the Australian Chess Federation.

THE AUSTRALIAN DAVIS CUP TENNIS FOUNDATION annual report 2011 16 FORMAT FOR DAVIS CUP With 110 years of tradition behind it, the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas is the premier team competition in tennis. The symbol of this prestigious competition is the beautiful silver Davis Cup trophy, donated by Harvard student Dwight Filley Davis in 1900. It now consists of four pieces; the silver Trophy and three wooden bases (total weight over 200kg).

In the early years, only two nations competed for temporary ownership of the Davis Cup trophy, the United States and the British Isles. Before the first World War, France, Belgium Austria, Australasia, Germany and Canada had joined the USA and Britain in competing for the Davis Cup.

The Davis Cup is a recognised institution in tennis. It will be as influential in the 21st century game as it was instrumental in the growth of tennis from 1900 until the present day. The simplicity of its Nation vs. Nation format has provided a framework for one of the most successful competitions in sporting history.

From its inception, Davis Cup has attracted all of the top Australian players. Rafter, Hewitt, Philippoussis, the Woodies, Stoltenberg and Arthurs are all modern day members of a century old club whose legends include Sir , , , Frank Sedgman, , Ashley Cooper, Neale Fraser, , , John Newcombe, and now Lleyton Hewitt, all winners of the greatest Event of them all – Wimbledon.

Each tie consists of five matches, four singles and one doubles, played over three days. On the opening day, the number two singles player for each nation plays the number one player for the opposing nation. On day two, the crucial doubles match is played. On the final day, the number one players face each other in the opening match while the number two players meet in the fifth match. All are played over best-of-five-sets with no tie break in the fifth set.

The pinnacle of the Davis Cup competition is the World Group. Sixteen nations are drawn against each other in a knock-out format leading up to the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Final. Nations that have gone on to win the Davis Cup title include the United States, Australia, Great Britain, France, Sweden, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, South Africa, Russia, Spain and Croatia. Each year’s World Group competition is made up of four rounds, scheduled throughout the year, culminating in the Davis Cup Final played in late November/early December.

Below the World Group, there are three regional zones, the Euro/African, American and Asia/Oceania Zones, in which Group I, II, III, and IV ties are played. The goal is to move up group by group until the World Group and possibly the title is achieved.

The eight winners of Zonal Group I competition are drawn with the eight World Group first round losers in September’s World Group Qualifying Round. Stakes are high as the winners will go on to compete in the World Group in the subsequent year. In the 2010 Davis Cup competition, 125 nations participated from Zonal Group IV through to the elite World Group.

Prize money was introduced to the Davis Cup competition for the first time in 1981, when the NEC Corporation joined the competition as its Title Sponsor. In 2002, BNP Paribas took over the Title Sponsorship. BNP Paribas is joined by six international Ancillary Sponsors – Hewlett Packard, Hugo Boss, NH Hoteles, Rolex, Turismo Madrid and Wilson – in supporting the Davis Cup competition on a worldwide basis.
