World Première Recordings Ferdinand RIES (1784–1838) Sonatas for Violin and Piano, Vol. 2 Eric Grossman, Violin • Susan Kagan, Piano

This second volume of Ferdinand Ries’s violin sonatas furthers our exploration of music by a gifted composer who enjoyed a close and productive relationship with Beethoven as student, friend, and colleague. Filled with elegance and refinement, these three sonatas display the range of Ries’s creative gifts as a composer, skilfully synthesising the clarity and discipline of Mozart’s Viennese Classical style with the inventiveness and freedom of the new Romanticism developing in the early 19th century. Volume 1 (8.573193) was regarded as ‘simply too good to miss’ by MusicWeb International.

Key Features:

• Gifted and prolific in his output but always under the shadow of his friend and colleague Beethoven, Ferdinand Ries has enjoyed something of a revival in recent years, due in no small part to releases on the Naxos label that have included his piano concertos, chamber

music, and a complete edition of his piano sonatas with Susan Kagan. © Peter Schaaf • Volume 1 of these recordings of Ries’s Violin Sonatas (8.573193) was released in 2015 to wide critical acclaim. Camillo Togni stands as one of the most representative figures of 20th-century Italian music. His uncompromisingly independent creativity can be defined as the quest to strike a balance between exacting formal coherence and the broadest imaginative freedom, while composing with extraordinary craftsmanship. Togni was inspired to write numerous works for his friend the acclaimed flautist Roberto Fabbriciani, a musician as close as any to this composer’s complex, mysterious and deeply poetic musical language.

Key Features:

• Including première recordings, this release is something of a ‘who’s-who’ of acclaimed contemporary music specialists. This release is already stamped with authoritative interpretations through the involvement of flutist Roberto Fabbriciani, Togni’s long-time friend and artistic collaborator. English 8.573731 Playing Time: soprano Dorothy Dorow is something of a legendary figure in modern music, and pianist Massimiliano Damerini is Price Code: 53:02 © Silvia Lelli regarded as one of the leading interpreters of his generation, Roberto Fabbriciani NXP 7 47313 37317 8 with recordings such as the complete piano works of Salvatore Sciarrino available on the Dynamic label. May the revival start here!” The Ex Novo Ensemble recording includes pianist Carlo Orvieto, whose ongoing complete four-volume edition of Togni’s piano music (8.572990, 8.572991 & 8.573430) has 8.573748 8.573613 8.572922 8.572731 been considered “compelling and even beautiful… I have no idea why he is so neglected; this is very fine material in a broad range of styles.” (Fanfare)

His organ symphonies helped to blow spectacular new life into an instrument that had become sorely neglected, and it was in salons such as that of the organ builder Cavaillé-Coll that his chamber music was first welcomed with enthusiasm. Widor went on to work with leading players of his day, composing audition showpieces such as the Introduction et Rondo, the recently rediscovered and popular Sérénade with its rich harmonium sonorities, and the Suite, Op. 34 that far transcends the salon genre in its character and range. Key Features:

• Charles Widor is best known by far for his great organ symphonies, but in the past we’ve been keen to explore his lesser known work, including his songs or mélodies (8.572345), considered “…a major discovery” by Fanfare. Other than one or two recordings of his piano trios and piano quintet (8.555416), Widor’s music beyond the organ is very rarely heard indeed. • 8.573764 Playing Time: Some of the finest players active in the Netherlands and beyond Price Code: 62:16 have been assembled for this NXP 7 47313 37647 6 recording, including oboist Alexei Companion Titles – Companion Titles – Ogrintchouk, well-known for his

Restored by Mayr expert Frans Hauk from two extant manuscript versions and heard here in its world premiere recording, Simon Mayr’s Stabat mater in F minor was singled out by a contemporary biographer “for its marvellous effect” and “heavenly beauty”. Mayr himself frequently returned to this work, recycling one of its movements in his great Requiem (Naxos 8.573419-20). The song-like Ave maris stella builds on a hymn that dates back to the 8th century. Key Features:

• Franz Hauk’s revival of the music of Simon Mayr has for many years been a feature of the Naxos catalogue, now amounting to over 15 acclaimed recordings of masterpieces from Mayr’s forgotten or neglected bel canto craft. He has assembled his finest soloists for this recording, including soprano Andrea 8.573781 Playing Time: Lauren Brown, who “brings a strong mixture of vocal colors to the demanding role,” indeed the title role of Mayr’s Saffo Price Code: 59:55 © Silvia Lelli (8.660367-68), which also includes “the role of Phaon… Franz Hauk NXP 7 47313 37817 3 performed beautifully by the Korean soprano Jaewon Yun” (The Washington Post). Includes World Première Recordings Manuel BLANCAFORT (1897–1987) Complete Songs, Vol. 1 Anna Alàs i Jové, Mezzo-soprano • Miquel Villalba, Piano

Catalonian native Manuel Blancafort was largely self-taught as a composer. Taken under Frederic Mompou’s wing, he was introduced to the rich cultural life of 1920s and became part of a fertile aesthetic revolution that rejected Romanticism and marked a revival of Classicism and beauty, his concise, intimate and playful spirit connected to that of Grieg, Fauré and Satie. Always maintaining their Catalan roots, Blancafort’s songs evoke the past and dream of a country aspiring to become cultured and free from oppression. The clarity and simplicity of this message led one commentator to describe him as “the living synthesis of Catalan musical culture”.

Key Features:

• Manuel Blancafort’s music holds a quiet spell over those who discover it, and while not as widely known as those of contemporaries such as Poulenc, his songs are held in the highest regard in his native Catalonia. This is the first of a two-volume edition of Blancafort’s complete songs. Including world première recordings, it will be the definitive reference for these jewels in their genre. • Award-winning Catalan mezzo-soprano Anna Alàs Playing Time: 8.579012 i Jové has performed to great acclaim both at home Price Code: 61:08 and abroad. Ferruccio BUSONI (1866–1924) Piano Music, Vol. 9 Wolf Harden, Piano

All the works in this disc were composed when Busoni was between the ages of eleven and fifteen. Full of charm and wit, they reveal his precocious absorption of earlier models – principally Bach, Mozart, Weber and Schumann – as well as exceptional technical finesse. Una festa di villaggio charts the day’s events of a village festival whilst Suite campestre, one of his most distinctive early compositions, possesses moments of inwardness that presage the mature works to come.
