Constantin I. Karadja in the Collections of the Romanian Academy Library
Constantin I. Karadja in the Collections of the Romanian Academy Library 1. Introduction The title of this talk contains the names of three distinctive entities, namely : a) Constantin I. Karadja, b) the Romanian Academy Library , and c) the collections . The main emphasis of the talk will be laid upon the documents associated with the name of Constantin I. Karadja in the Library’s collections. To set the stage for describing this collection, a few data about his personality and the Library will be given first. Then a sample of several items out of Kardaja funds shall follow. More copies of documents shall be displayed in the exhibition and an almost permanent trace of the material is to be found on the website of the Library (http://www.biblacad.ro/ ). 2. C. I. Karadja Today we pay homage to an outstanding European inter-war diplomat, a great historian and a passionate bibliophile, an exquisite collector and a generous donor, Prince Constantin Jean Lars Anthony Démétrius Karadja (1889-1950). Honorific Member of the Romanian Academy (AR) since 1946, he embodies the figure of an erudite called to raise the spirit of his time and the standards of diplomacy. Of a Phanariote-Romanian and Swedish origin, after graduating the Law Faculty Inner Temple in London to become a barrister specialized in economics, conversant in 12 languages, he entered diplomacy, but kept alive his enthusiasm for culture all his life. The impressive fact is that, although hardly naturalized Romanian in 1920, after his marriage to Marcella Karadja, Constantin Karadja felt at home only in Romania. -

Heritage, Landscape and Conflict Archaeology
THE EDGE OF EUROPE: HERITAGE, LANDSCAPE AND CONFLICT ARCHAEOLOGY by ROXANA-TALIDA ROMAN A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology School of History and Cultures College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham May 2019 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT The research presented in this thesis addresses the significance of Romanian WWI sites as places of remembrance and heritage, by exploring the case of Maramureș against the standards of national and international heritage standards. The work provided the first ever survey of WWI sites on the Eastern Front, showing that the Prislop Pass conflictual landscape holds undeniable national and international heritage value both in terms of physical preservation and in terms of mapping on the memorial-historical record. The war sites demonstrate heritage and remembrance value by meeting heritage criteria on account of their preservation state, rarity, authenticity, research potential, the embedded war knowledge and their historical-memorial functions. The results of the research established that the war sites not only satisfy heritage legal requirements at various scales but are also endangered. -

The Behavioural Dynamics of Romania's Foreign Policy In
THE BEHAVIOURAL DYNAMICS OF ROMANIA’S FOREIGN POLICY IN THE LATE 1990s: THE DRIVE FOR SECURITY AND THE POLITICS OF VOLUNTARY SERVITUDE Eduard Rudolf ROTH Abstract. This article investigates the nature, the magnitude and the impact of the exogenously articulated preferences in the articulation of Romania’s foreign policy agenda and behavioural dynamics during the period 1996-2000. In this context, the manuscript will explore Romania’s NATO and (to a lesser extent) EU accession bids, within an analytical framework defined by an overlapped interplay of heterochthonous influences, while trying to set out for further understanding how domestic preferences can act as a transmission belt and impact on foreign policy change in small and medium states. Keywords: Romanian foreign policy, NATO enlargement, EU enlargement, Russian-Romanian relations, Romanian-NATO relations, Romania-EU relations 1. Introduction By 1995 – with the last stages of the first Yugoslav crisis confirming that Moscow cannot adequately get involved into complex security equations – and fearing the possible creation of a grey area between Russia and Western Europe, Romanian authorities embarked the country on a genuinely pro-Western path, putting a de facto end to the dual foreign policy focus, “ambivalent policy”,1 “double speak”2 or “politics of ambiguity” 3 which dominated Bucharest’s’ diplomatic exercise throughout the early 1990s. This spectral shift (which arguably occurred shortly after Romanian President Iliescu’s visit in Washington) wasn’t however the result of a newly-found democratic vocation of the indigenous government, but rather an expression of the conviction that such behaviour could help the indigenous administration in its attempts to secure the macro-stabilization of the country’s unreformed economy and to acquire security guarantees in order to mitigate the effects of the political and geographical pressures generated by the Transdniestrian and Yugoslav conflicts, or by the allegedly irredentist undertones of Budapest’s foreign policy praxis. -
The Parthian Shot Newsletter of the British Horseback Archery Association
The Parthian Shot Newsletter of the British Horseback Archery Association Issue 3, November 2010 Welcome to the Parthian Shot, occasional newsletter of the BHAA. This is the third issue ... and yes I know we didn’t manage to get four out in a year as promised. However, hopefully that has meant there has been no compromise on quality and once again thanks to all those who have submitted articles over the last 12 months. The focus for this issue are the Dark Ages - and notably the infamous Huns. Described in history books as “the scourge of God” they were the original bad-boys of horse archery ... or were they? Dark Age Horse Archers by Rick Lippiett During the Dark Ages Central Eurasia and Central Europe underwent a series of complicated, and seemingly endless migrations, invasions, conquests, reconquests and occupations. This was in contrast to Greater Persia which enjoyed some relative stability for 400 years under the Sassanid Empire (which had fairly seamlessly replaced the Parthian Empire). The situation was otherwise in the lands occupied by modern day Ukraine, Turkey, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and the Balkans. Hun Nomad Horse Archer - Horse and Hun Rider taking a break. Note slung bow & straight sword During the Dark Ages (roughly from 100AD - 600AD) an area of Central Europe became a prominent powerbase and would remain so much like the Mongol Tribes and Clans 1000 As they were later described, ‘The Scourge of for at least the next 500 years. The Romans years later. Amongst these Sarmatian tribes God’ would sweep out of the East in an unholy named that region Pannonia, and indeed for were also the Saccae (the former Greek name whirlwind of violence and destruction and some of the time it was considered a province for the Scythians), Roxolani, Iazyges, Siraces, completely overwhelm most of the nomadic of the Roman Empire.
