INTRODUCTION MINENT CROAT HISTORIANS and national tribunes E have noted that throughout its history, Croatia never had the wherewithal to be independent. Hrvastka nije umjela nikada postati jezgrom i privlacilom za vece drzavne tvorevine. Size, location, and history has combined to transform the Croats into a subordinate nation without a conscious role in history. Croatia was always too small to form an independent political entity and too weak to resist foreign domination. Croatia’s existence and survival as a dependent poltical-geographic entity appear to be based on the ability to opportunistically adapt to changes in the balance of power in Central Europe and serve as a useful base for lesser and greater imperial expansions in the Balkans. • With rare exceptions, we Croats are a nation of opportunists: today, boisterous malcontents; tomorrow, chirping sychophants. In any event, my friend, the Croatians have lived this way for centuries—so they are not about to disappear in they continue in this manner (Franz Racki, 1877). • Regardless of his social background, the Croat is by nature, by every measure, completely unreliable. He cannot conceive or understand a straight political course. He is always oriented to negative criticism, without being clear as to what he actually wants, and, instead, as is 9 his nature and habit, carries on in the most opportunistic manner (Vice Admiral Werner Lowisch, Kommandierrender Admiral Adria, 7 February 1944). • You see, in the Second World War, the Croats won twice and have no reason to apologize to anyone . We won twice and everyone else only once. We won on 10 April [1941] when the Axis Powers recognized Croatia as a state and we won again after the war because we sat and dined with with the winners at the winner’s table (President Stjepan Mesic, 1991). As elsewhere in early 19th century Hungary, Croatia is a multinational entity, especially in its towns and cities, where foreigners are dominant in social, economic and cultural affairs. Not surprisingly, urban and literate non-Croats take a leading role in formulating a national narrative and creating a Croat nationality opposed to assimilation in Hungary. On one level, the foreign and non-Croat fact of the national revival in Hungary is a non-issue and a matter of common knowledge in educated Croat circles. A recent 2007 case in point is Zeljko Poljak’s discussion of medical terminology in Croatia. The Croatian revival movement was mainly initiated by foreign, or rather Croatianized foreigners such as the Czech Ljudevit Gaj, Slovene Stanko Vraz, Tzintzar Dimitrije Demeter, Hungarian Ljudevit Vukotinovic (alias Farkas, meaning wolf in Hungarian), German Ferdo Livadic (alias Wiesner von Wisenfeldt), Ignaz Fuchs (alias Vatroslav Lisinski), Czech August Senoa, not to mention the first great Croatian opera singer, Countess Sidonija Rubido-Erdody. All this is readily substantiated by looking at the figures presented in Bukovac’s Croatian Revival painting in the Croatian

Abstract - The author presents two small pottery assemblages from two sites explored by the “Circolo Speleologico e Idrologico Friulano” of Udine at the beginning of 20th century: the fortified settlement of Galleriano (Lestizza, Udine) and the village of Castions di Strada (Udine) originally surrounded by embankments. These sites, locally named “castellieri”, have been established in the Middle Friuli Plain during the Bronze Age. The pottery from Galleriano is dated to Late Bronze Age. The ceramic from Castions is classified in three assemblages corresponding to the building and the two different development phases of the banks (transitions from the Middle Bronze Age to the Late Bronze Age, the Late Bronze Age and from the Final Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age).

“THE DOUBLE BIND” OF 1989: REINTERPRETING SPACE, PLACE, AND IDENTITY IN POSTCOMMUNIST WOMEN’S LITERATURE BY JESSICA LYNN WIENHOLD-BROKISH DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2010 Urbana, Illinois Doctorial Committee: Associate Professor Lilya Kaganovsky, Chair; Director of Research Professor Nancy Blake Professor Harriet Murav Associate Professor Anke Pinkert Abstract This dissertation is a comparative, cross-cultural exploration of identity construction after 1989 as it pertains to narrative setting and the creation of literary place in postcommunist women’s literature. Through spatial analysis the negotiation between the unresolvable bind of a stable national and personal identity and of a flexible transnational identity are discussed. Russian, German, and Croatian writers, specifically Olga Mukhina, Nina Sadur, Monika Maron, Barbara Honigmann, Angela Krauß, Vedrana Rudan, Dubravka Ugrešić, and Slavenka Drakulić, provide the material for an examination of the proliferation of female writers and the potential for recuperative literary techniques after 1989. The project is organized thematically with chapters dedicated to apartments, cities, and foreign lands, focusing on strategies of identity reconstruction after the fall of socialism. ii To My Family, especially Mom, Dad, Jeffrey, and Finnegan iii Table of Contents Chapter One: Introduction: “We are, from this perspective,

  • Count Ivan Anž Frankopan, the Royal Steward of the Estate in Sweden 1426 - 1434
COUNT IVAN ANŽ FRANKOPAN, THE ROYAL STEWARD OF THE ESTATE IN SWEDEN 1426 - 1434 Mladen Ibler Within the framework of medieval history of Europe and its own geostrategic location, Scandinavian royalties and nobility entertained contacts with central and western Europe. Less known however, is the relationship between Eric of Pomerania, the King of the three Scandinavian realms and the Croatian nobility of Frankopans. This paper attempts to provide the short description of the conditions in Croatia and Scandinavia at the beginning of XV century, the relationship between Eric of Pommerania and count Ivan Anž Frankopan, and the role of the Republic of Dubrovnik (Ragusa) during King Eric’s travel on his way to the Holy Land 1424-5. Based on Dubrovnik, Budapest, Vatican, and Scandinavian sources, a special emphasis is beeing given to the events surrounding Ivan Anž Frankopan’s visit to Sweden. In Venetian and Scandinavian sources, he is reffered to under the name of Gian Franchi and Johan Franke. Due to this reason, historians have been unaware of the real identity of King Eric’s steward of the estate (fief) Stegeborg in Sweden 1426-34, count Ivan Anž Frankopan. Key words: Frankopan, Ivan Anž; the King Eric of Pommerania; Stegeborg; Kalmar Union I. The Kingdom of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia has been in personal union with Kingdom of Hungary since 1102. Its main parts, Dalmatia and Croatia were governed by a viceroy (Ban), and Slavonia, as the third part, was governed by its own viceroy. In the beginning of the fifteenth century the Kingdom was the object of fight between King Ladislas of Naples and his rival Sigismund of Luxemburg.
