Stoga sam sa svojim suradnicima još 2005. godine pokrenuo ulaganja u obnovu i konzervaciju frankopanskih kaštela, a onda smo i s projektom „Kulturno-turistička ruta Putovima Frankopana“ nastavili u tom pravcu, s ciljem valorizacije i revitalizacije ovih vrijednih baštinskih zdanja. Ujedno, bit će to velik poticaj razvoju našega zaleđa i Gorskoga kotara, jer se većina sadržaja nalazi izvan turistički atraktivnih obal- nih područja. Borislav Grgin Filozofski fakultet sveučilišta u Zagrebu PreCeeDing the TRIPLEX CONFINIUM – the battLe oF krbava FieLD, sePteMber 9th, 1493 In this paper the attempt has been made to present a rounded view and oer some new interpretations re- garding one of the most recognizable and dramatic moments during the late medieval Croatian history. e Battle of Krbava Field, September 9th, 1493, dramatically shook the very foundations of medieval Croatia’s political and social structures. It stimulated creation of various texts written by its contemporaries and later commentators, who were discussing political, military and symbolical elements of the battle. e battle left a signicant imprint even in the collective memory of the Croatian people, thanks to the older historians of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the interpretations of the battle in school manuals and teaching. e Krbava Battle, due to its real and symbolic signicance in Croatian˝history, still remains an interesting and challenging topic for the historians and for the wider public. erefore, it is not surprising that, due to incomplete and sometimes conicting and contradictory information in the sources, the interest for the battle and various interpretations reemerged during the last two decades and a half, after Croatia gained its independence. Key words: Krbava, Croatia, Ottomans, Late Middle Ages, Battle here are few events or moments in Croatian medieval history that are today present in Tnational collective memory. • A Unique Type of Archaic Oral Poetry
Oral Tradition, 6/2 3 (1991): 200-224 Bugaršćice: A Unique Type of Archaic Oral Poetry Josip Kekez Historical and Geographical Defi nition In the context of oral literature, bugaršćice1 represent an important and unique genre in many respects. They are, among other things, striking proof that oral literature is not simply a discovery of the nineteenth century—as was long maintained in South Slavic regions—and that two literatures, oral and written, were in contact from the earliest times in a number of ways, including the manner of their recording and study. On the other hand, we would know nothing of the genre in question and its aesthetic values if interest in oral literature had not existed from the beginning; many passages in the early literature of Croatia would have forever remained obscure, while Croatian poetry of the present day would have assumed a different profi le. Scholars have not so far taken suffi cient account of the fact that the poetic system of the bugaršćica is distinctly indigenous and in many of its features remote from other verse forms of oral literature; nor is there evidence that it existed at any time or in any national community or setting other than those discussed below. Apart from one or two examples, all bugaršćice have been recorded on the eastern Adriatic strip from Istria in the north to the Gulf of Kotor in the south, so that they are geographically strictly defi ned. One poem was recorded on the western side of the Adriatic, in southern Italy, but it was sung in their own language by settlers from the eastern side of the Adriatic.

Christian-Muslim Relations A Bibliographical History History of Christian-Muslim Relations Editorial Board David Thomas, University of Birmingham Sandra Toenies Keating, Providence College Tarif Khalidi, American University of Beirut Suleiman Mourad, Smith College Gabriel Said Reynolds, University of Notre Dame Mark Swanson, Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago Volume 24 Christians and Muslims have been involved in exchanges over matters of faith and morality since the founding of Islam. Attitudes between the faiths today are deeply coloured by the legacy of past encounters, and often preserve centuries-old negative views. The History of Christian-Muslim Relations, Texts and Studies presents the surviving record of past encounters in authoritative, fully introduced text editions and annotated translations, and also monograph and collected studies. It illustrates the development in mutual perceptions as these are contained in surviving Christian and Muslim writings, and makes available the arguments and rhetorical strategies that, for good or for ill, have left their mark on attitudes today. The series casts light on a history marked by intellectual creativity and occasional breakthroughs in communication, although, on the whole beset by misunderstanding and misrepresentation. By making this history better known, the series seeks to contribute to improved recognition between Christians and Muslims in the future. The titles published in this series are listed at brill.com/hcmr Christian-Muslim Relations A Bibliographical History Volume 7. They arrived in an organized manner to the eastern Adriatic coast and the re- gion bordered by the Drina, Drava and Danube rivers in the first half of the seventh century, during the time of major Avar-Byzan- tine Wars and general upheavals in Europe. In the territory where they settled, they organized During the reign of Prince themselves into three political entities, based on the previ Branimir, Pope John VIII, ous Roman administrative organizations: White (western) the universal authority at Croatia, commonly referred to as Dalmatian Croatia, and Red the time, granted (southern) Croatia, both of which were under Byzantine su Croatia international premacy, and Pannonian Croatia, which was under Avar su recognition. premacy. The Croats in Pannonian Croatia became Frankish vassals at the end of the eighth century, while those in Dalmatia came under Frankish rule at the beginning of the ninth century, and those in Red Croatia remained under Byzantine supremacy.

MENTAL MAPS IN THE SERB-CATHOLIC IMAGINATION IN DUBROVNIK Abstract This article describes the experience of the community of Serb-Catholics living in Dubrovnik in the early twentieth century. It is based primarily on an investigation of the literary and cultural periodical Srdj (1902–08). This study focuses, fi rstly, on the conceptual ambivalence resulting from efforts to apply linguistic criteria to determine Serbian identity and, secondly, on the efforts to construct a mental map that would serve projections of Serbian symbolic territory. While the presence of the Serb-Catholic milieu in the city was short-lived (from the mid-nineteenth century to the First World War), it nevertheless left traces on the urban landscape that typifi ed the ambivalent formation of national identity along religious lines, as Croatians were associated with Catholicism and Serbs with Orthodoxy. Keywords: Serb-Catholics, Dubrovnik, Dalmatia, nation-building, Serbia, Habsburg monarchy I INTRODUCTION A glance at the map of the Habsburg Monarchy following the Aus- tro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 reveals emphatically just how peripheral a place Dalmatia (offi cially the Kingdom of Dalmatia) had in the Empire. Dubrovnik had an even less important position. This once wealthy commune that had competed with Venice in terms of status was now located at the periphery of a periphery, squeezed into a narrow isthmus between the Adriatic and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Owing to its exceptionally rich culture – which is evident both in the cultural landscape (architecture) and in writing (in documents from the past and in literature) – Croatians and Serbians alike, as well as Italians http://dx.doi.org/10.12775/APH.2020.121.07 144 Maciej Czerwiński in some sense, have staked claims to Dubrovnik.
