Title of the project Gender Based Social Expectations: An analysis of the role of textbooks in primary school An Honors Society Project Gerta Ymeri Advisor: Venera Demukaj, PhD Second Reader: Edona Maloku, PhD candidate July 2020 1 Abstract This project analyzes the presence of gender stereotypes in the textbooks used in elementary school, with a special focus on the literature used for children in the first up to the fifth grade. This study is mainly focused on gender stereotypical signs in texts and illustrations on areas such as family roles, physical appearance, generic nouns and pronouns, and professions. It further showcases the impact that these textbooks, specifically women and men representation have on children on their future endeavors. The study represents existing evidence in Kosovo, including information on Kosovar education, legal framework, and similar research to this project. Research for this project was conducted by a combination of primary and secondary data. The secondary data was gathered from different sources; whereas, the primary data was gathered through semi- structured interviews as well as small scale experiments. The results gathered confirm that social expectations based on gender are present and they cover a great portion of space in school textbooks. The existing gender stereotypes in school textbooks play an important role on child development and enforcement of these stereotypes in the society overall. 2 Table of Contents Abstract .................................................................................................................................................. 2 Acknowledgments .................................................................................................................................. 5 List of Tables & Graphs ........................................................................................................................... 6 List of Figures .......................................................................................................................................... 6 1. Like in any other book, the abc-book has some types of names. The names on these abc-books compose an important and interesting field for studies. During this research we will focus at the onomastics of Albanian abc-books in Kosovo from the year of 1945 – 2012. This study of onomastics especially analyses the anthroponomastics or the personal names. The group of anthroponyms shall include these types of individual names: names from one Albanian word, Illyrian names, Catholic names, Slavic names, oriental names, anthroponyms that came from places, the form of names that came from the first and last part of the name and names from abbreviations and different cuttings etc. This research is a study that describes and compares names from one abc- book to another. By studying different types of names in the abc-books we open a window for knowledge to the abc-books as special books, we knowledge the value of educational names as well as the types of the names in the abc- books of different periods that our people had to go through. Essentially, the study of the names has special importance because it contributes to history of education and linguistics.

  • Einführung in Die Albanologie
Wilfried Fiedler Einführung in die Albanologie Meißen 2006 (Vorläufige Version; Unvollständig) Einführung in die Albanologie 1 I. Bibliographie Die erste "Albanesische Bibliographie" von Ing. Manek, Dr. G. Pekmezi und Ob.- Leut. A. Stotz erschien in Wien 1909.

INTRODUCTION Preservation and cultivation of national identity is a fundamental human right. First and most important sign of this identity is the mother tongue. Learning mother tongue in school means also learning about culture of the origin and its elements. Preservation and development of national identity is difficult in living conditions outside motherland1, and this is manifested much more in younger generations, especially among children born abroad. Therefore, the school is the most appropriate institution to developed and teach-learn linguistic and cultural competence with professional care, therefore, this school is already known as Albanian School of Supplementary Learning in Diaspora. Curriculum of Albanian School of Supplementary Learning in Diaspora, primarily is dedicated to Albanian children and youth (students) living abroad. This document is part of the permanent aim of new generation awareness raising in relation to the language and culture of origin, as an advantage, and in particular their personal and national identity, while on the other hand, a support for their integration in the society where they live.

  • Learning to Read and Spell in Albanian, English and Welsh: the Effect Of
Learning to read and spell in Albanian, English and Welsh: the effect of orthographic transparency Lorenc Hoxhallari This thesis is submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Psychology, University of Wales, Bangor, UK. May, 2006 iii Abstract Effects of orthographic transparency on literacy acquisition were examined by comparing data from children learning to read in Albanian, Welsh, and English. The Welsh and especially Albanian orthographies are extremely transparent, whereas the English orthography is notorious for its lack of transparency. In the pilot study, twenty Year I Albanian children were given a reading test consisting of a 100-word stratified sample of decreasing written frequency. These children were able to read accurately 80% of the words; reading latency was a direct effect of word length (R2 =. 89); and errors tended to be mispronunciations rather than real word replacements, with hardly any null responses. These results were compared with Ellis and Hooper (2001), where the same design was used with English and Welsh children of the same age, but with one more year of formal reading instruction. The Albanian children read more words than the English and Welsh children, but they had longer reading latencies. Like the Welsh children, but unlike the English children, the Albanian children made more nonword errors. These results suggest that children acquire reading faster the more transparent the orthography, and that shallow orthographies promote an initial reliance on a phonological recoding strategy. The main study examined reading, spelling, phonological and orthographic skills of 6-, 8- and 10-year old Albanian, English and Welsh children.
