Information about the Conferment Ceremony for New Doctors during 2010/2011 at Stockholm University. Updated: 2010-09-27 Stockholm University will arrange a conferment ceremony for new doctors and inauguration of new professors on Friday 30 September 2011. The ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. in the Blue Hall of the Stockholm City Hall and will be followed by a banquet in the Gold Hall, with dancing in the Blue Hall. Invitation Those doctorates who have defended their doctoral thesis during 2010/2011 and who have received their doctoral degree, will receive an invitation to the ceremony in the middle of June 2011. The International Student Office is responsible for issuing the degree. If you have questions about your degree please contact their office. If you applied for your degree after the end of the term it is necessary to contact us if you wish to participate in the conferment ceremony. Registration will be made on www.su.se/doktorspromotion according to the information given on the invitation card. Persons who are not able to participate in the 2011 ceremony may be conferred a doctoral degree next year, in 2012. Please notify this in writing to the Event Manager, no later than 30 April 2012. This may be done by sending an e-mail to: [email protected] or by posting a letter to Stockholms universitet, Konferensservice, SE-106 91 Stockholm, Sweden. Insignia presented during the ceremony During the ceremony proceedings you will be presented with a doctoral hat if you are a lawyer or a laurel if you are from one of the other faculties. Those receiving a doctor’s degree will also receive a diploma. The organization committee will order both the hats and the laurels. On the registration form you must therefore indicate your hat size, which is measured by the circumference of your head in centimetres. If you are receiving a law degree you must also be precision sized for your particular hat. This can be done at a couple of places in the Stockholm area (see ”Other information” below). The conferment ceremony is purely voluntary and has no legal significance. Individuals who have defended their thesis and received a degree have the same right to purchase both a doctor’s ring and a hat, without the obligation of participating in the actual ceremony. Banquet At the invitation of the Vice Chancellor, recipients of the doctoral degree (promovendi) are invited to attend a banquet following the ceremony, free of charge. Guests to the ceremony and banquet Promovendi are allowed to invite one guest to the ceremony and banquet, in addition to two other guests who are welcome to attend only the ceremony. The cost for the banquet for your guest will be approximately 995 kronor, which should be paid to PG 15657-0 not later than the end of August 2011. Please refer to 2964503 and the order number found in the confirmation of registration. There is no charge for guests invited only to the ceremony, but a ticket is required. There is a possibility to put a number of additional guests to the banquet on a waiting list . Please choose number of guests on the registration form. You will be notified by e-mail in the end of August, when all registrations have been made, if there are seats available for additional guests. Academic advisors to the recipients of a doctoral degree receive a personal invitation for the ceremony and banquet after the candidate has applied to participate in the conferment ceremony. The subsidized banquet ticket for the Advisor will be approximately 495 kronor. Our recommendation is that children should not attend the conferment ceremony. The event is of little satisfaction to children since it requires that they sit still for 2 1/2 hours. Children who are restless or talkative may be perceived by some guests to be a nuisance. Dress Formal dress is required at the conferment ceremony and banquet reception. This may be either ”white tie and tails” with a white vest (may include orders/medallions) or an evening gown. There are no dress requirements for those guests who will only attend the conferment ceremony in the Blue Hall. Rehearsal An obligatory rehearsal will take place at 11 a.m. on the same day of the conferment ceremony in the Blue Hall at the City Hall. This usually takes about 1 1/2 hours. Photographing In order for the ceremony to be carried out as smoothly as possible, it is requested that no pictures be taken during that time. A professional photographer will be at hand to take pictures during the entire ceremony. Approximately two weeks after the ceremony a sample album will be made available to view pictures that can be purchased. The ceremony will also be recorded and a DVD will be sold at the Student Support in the University Library, and a live broadcast on the Internet will be made. Cancellations Please notify us as soon as possible on [email protected] . Payments for banquet guests will not be refunded if the cancellation is made later than one week before the ceremony.
