These festivities include the public defence of a dissertation, the post-doctoral karonkka banquet, and the conferment. Lappeenranta University of Technology was established in 1969 and, compared to many other universities, does not have long-standing traditions in academic festivities and especially doctoral conferment ceremonies. The following dress code should be observed at academic events at Lappeenranta University of Technology to establish in-house traditions. The instructions may, in some respects, differ from those of other universities. For simplicity the information has been presented in four different books. Book 1 – Mythical to Viking Era (? – 1250) Book 2 – Folkunga Dynasty (1250 – 1523) Book 3 – Vasa Dynasty (1523 – 1751) Book 4 – Recent Royalty (1751 – Present) Book 4 covers the most recent history including the wars with Russia that eventually led to the loss of Finland to Russia and the emergence of Finland as an independent nation as well as the history of Sweden during World Wars I and II. A list is included showing our relationship with the royal family according to the lineage from Nils Kettilsson Vasa. The relationship with the spouses is also shown although these are from different ancestral lineages. Text is included for those which are highlighted in the list. Gemenskap och ambivalens Finsk-svenska möten i finlandssvenska läroböcker i historia NIKLAS AMMERT ”Svenskar äro vi inte, ryssar vilja vi inte bli, låt oss därför vara finnar”.1 Citatet är hämtat från den finlandssvenska historieläroboken Vändpunkter i Finlands historia, som återger vad den finländske akademikern Adolf Ivar Arwidsson sägs ha uttryckt. Avsnittet berättar om de nationalistiska idéer som florerade vid akademin i Åbo i början av 1800-talet. Bokens författare beskriver en ståndpunkt i relationen mellan Finland och Sverige. Samman- hanget signalerar att de finländska aktörerna skilde sig från de svenska. En sådan textpassus är inte unik på något sätt. Läroböcker är i många avseenden värdeladdade. Deras funktion är, utöver att förmedla kunskap, också att ut- trycka och överföra värden och att fostra eleverna.2 En specifik aspekt av vär- derande fostran är de uttryck för nationell identitet som förekommer i läro- böcker från flera olika länder.3 En sådan funktion bygger på kopplingen mel- lan historia och identitet. Lund Conference on Earth System Governance - Towards a Just and Legitimate Earth System Governance: Addressing Inequalities Lund April 18-20, 2012 Lund University has a long and vibrant history covering almost 350 years of teaching and research with currently around 47 000 students and a position of excellence in international teaching and research. At Lund University, the diversity is great and the opportunities endless. The wide range on offer within education and research, along with the compact nature of the university campus provides great potential for cross-disciplinary collaborations – collaborations that are necessary to meet global challenges and social problems now and in the future. LUCSUS, the Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies, was founded in 2000 as a cross-faculty LUCSUS organization, providing an interdisciplinary arena for Lund University Centre for research and education in sustainability science. LUCSUS Sustainability Studies employs about 35 researchers and support staff, and is also funding researchers at several other departments. In sustainability science we focus on questions related to local implications of the global challenges of development and environment. Our core consists of the trans-disciplinary international graduate school in sustainability science, comprising a Master’s program (www.lumes.lu.se) and a PhD program (www.lucid.lu.se). Our research covers wide-ranging themes such as the science/policy interface in connection with climate change; governance of water, land use and biodiversity in Africa and Latin America; gender and power in African development discourses; collective action and social entrepreneurship in Africa; food (in)security; sustainability assessment tools and methods. Funding of research projects is generated through large collaborative EU projects under FP-6 and FP-7 as well as Swedish research councils. -

charlotta wolff Noble conceptions of politics in eighteenth-century Sweden (ca 1740–1790) Studia Fennica Historica The Finnish Literature Society (SKS) was founded in 1831 and has, from the very beginning, engaged in publishing operations. It nowadays publishes literature in the fields of ethnology and folkloristics, linguistics, literary research and cultural history. The first volume of the Studia Fennica series appeared in 1933. Since 1992, the series has been divided into three thematic subseries: Ethnologica, Folkloristica and Linguistica. Two additional subseries were formed in 2002, Historica and Litteraria. The subseries Anthropologica was formed in 2007. In addition to its publishing activities, the Finnish Literature Society maintains research activities and infrastructures, an archive containing folklore and literary collections, a research library and promotes Finnish literature abroad. Ego etiam sum doctor scripturae: an historical and contemporary reflection on Luther’s life and work 145 Ego etiam sum doctor scripturae: an historical and contemporary reflection on Luther’s life and work as ‘doctor of holy scripture’ Dr Stephen Pietsch Stephen Pietsch is a pastoral theology lecturer at ALC, specialising in counselling and homilietics. Introduction ‘Doctor’ was arguably Luther’s most significant self-identification. Variants of the Latin phrase in the title of this essay, ‘I am also a doctor of scripture’, appear many times in Luther’s sermons and other writings, right through his career.1 It is the one designation which most closely captures Luther’s role in the three interconnected worlds he inhabited: university, local church and wider Reformation movement. He routinely signed his name ‘Doctor Martin Luther’ on letters and other documents, and in most of the documented references to Luther from his own time, even some of the unfavourable ones, he is named in the same way. Today’s egalitarian world refers to him simply by his name, but in the highly role-structured society of sixteenth century Germany, Luther was definitely ‘Herr Doktor’, even to most of his close associates and friends.2 It is a well-known part of the Luther story that he was awarded his doctoral degree at the University of Wittenberg in 1512. However, what is really known about this degree? How did Luther himself understand its value and importance? What did it mean in his world? How did Luther earn it? What role did it play in his reforming work? What insights from all this might be informative and even fruitful for us today, as Lutheran theological educators who stand on the threshold of the Reformation’s 500th anniversary and—at the same moment—look forward to a new millennium? Doctoral degrees in the 16th century In the early 16th century doctoral degrees were much rarer than they are today; they were a mark of high honour, and many important scholars were never awarded a doctoral degree.
