PIXIE LOTT @ G-A-Y 08/03/14 WORDS BY Heaven, under The YAFEU-KHAMISI Arches, Villiers Street, RODWAY-BROWN Charing Cross, PHOTOS BY WC2N 6NG CHRIS JEPSON
PERHAPS BRITISH pop’s most sparkly-eyed, cheeky-smiling blonde was the star entertainment on Heaven’s main stage last weekend – and Pixie Lott was quite the picture! Looking like Glam Rock had laid a golden egg, Pixie emerged onstage in a furry pastel blue crop top and fringed hotpants – exchanging the thigh high boots, she made her starry entrance into the superclub with more practical footwear; purpose-made for high- octane Saturday night performances! So, with two ripped backing-dancers for good measure, the show began – a thrusting, hip-swaying, hair flipping sequence of Lott’s sassy hits including debut single ‘Mama Do’ as well as tracks ‘Boys And Girls’, ‘All About Tonight’ and of course her latest, note-scaling club anthem ‘N.A S.T.Y’. Here’s wishing Lott a lot of success with her latest release, with all the fierce ‘werq’ put into this weekend’s showcase – it’s well deserved!

DISH 08/12/14 WORDS BY East Bloc, 217 City Road, ANTHONY GILÉT Shoreditch, EC1V 1JN PHOTOS BY MARK STOREY
WHAT WITH SPRING officially here, and everyone boasting about their skimpy outfits on Dish’s Facebook page, we had made an executive decision; it was definitely time to break out the short shorts again. But even in outfits that would make a stripper gasp, we were sweating more than Putin at a Pride Parade. We felt sorry for the drag queens; synthetic weave frying, collagen melting, facial hair singeing. Everyone who’s anyone had turned out for the event. We limbered up to the bass served by Borja Pena, before unleashing some unholy moves in the Tapass room with Cathal. While Q Boy offered something that wasn’t on the menu... La Paquena, as the face - and moustache - of Dish, did what she did best by werqing the crowd. Ollywood and Ray Noir owned the Side Dish like professionals, as Master Chef Tom Stephan got the main room shaking like a twerker with epilepsy. A night of debauchery in Shoreditch’s favourite oven had left us royally cooked. But if you can’t take the heat get out of East Bloc; next time we’ll be in pants.

Club Tin Tin 07/03/14 Rise WORDS BY 1 Leicester Square, TOM REDKID WC2H 7BL PHOTOS BY MARK STOREY
ROBB WHITE RE-LAUNCHED Tin Tin big time at the aptly titled RISE perched high atop 1 Leicester Square right smack dab in the heart of the action! Kicked off as the cheerleading squad, Tin-Tin has returned as Queen of the Prom (not in the Carrie bloodbath way) but in joyous Tracy Turnblatt style. And mama, what a comeback! Rescued from toiling away in the cellar, this Cinderfella has gloriously flung open the doors to her new palace and welcomed in old fans and new friends in a stunning venue overlooking Leicester Square. “We’re thriled to be at Rise,” beamed Robb White sucking a deep drag on a fag whilst peering out the 5th floor at the spectacular view with the theatre lights blazing above and the multitudes swarming below. Proud he should be, cuz Dorothy and her rustproof Tinmen, DJs Eduardo Herrera and Kurt Potter gave more than a few squirts of their oil cans to slick up the dance floor so we could lick up the grooves. White, Herrera, Potter – the Father, Son and Holy Ghost of nu-disco soulfunk – christened their new Friday night digs in style luring a happy Haribo mix up five flights of stairs (!) to a classy layout with so much potential. GM Kenny Leahy whose sheepish Irish charm belies a sharp businessman knows there’s work afoot and doesn’t shy away from it. “I came on board two months ago after a hiatus. I know it takes time but I can bring this place back to where it was.” With this new team in place, we have every faith in him. No lookin back, only full steam ahead!

EPIC 07/03/14 Pulse 1 Invicta Plaza, WORDS AND PHOTOS BY Southwark, SE1 9UF CHRIS JEPSON
THESE DAYS the mantra for many promoters seems to be ‘bigger is better’, but increasingly we are finding the ‘experience’ actually gets more and more diluted and, dare we say it, ‘bigger is actually more mediocre’. Bucking the trend however, last weekend saw Pulse on the Southbank hark back to the days when putting on a party was so much more than just hiring an ‘in’ DJ and hanging some decor. From Minty, the legendary doyenne of the door, the EPIC experience was one of sensory overload on all fronts. A cast of fabulous characters paraded the arches in everything from painted tranny freak-wear to arse-out muscle fetish, the crowd was a cross section of the beautiful bearded Hoxtonites, the gym card carrying testosteronistas, some street-smart one look will fuck you up urbanites and a melange of London’s fabulous club royalty. The music on the other hand featured the best imports available on any continent including DmiTry StriGun, Serving Ovahness and Razor & Guido Osorio dishing up the hottest house and dance tracks on either side of the pond. Hosts Johanna Londinium, La Pequeña, La Menor et al raised the über glam stakes to stratospheric, making this easily one of the best parties of the year so far. Keep your eyes peeled for their second outing ‘cus you really don’t wanna miss it.

PECKER + NANCY’S 07/03/14 WORDS BY Dalston Superstore CHRIS JOHN 117 Kingsland Road, PHOTOS BY E8 2PB JOEL RYDER
QX CLUB NEWS hit the saucy streets of London’s fashionable Eastside as Dalston Superstore ramped it up for a Friday fiesta with the launch of brand new club nite, Pecker, last weekend. Featuring all those happening ‘Superstore antics we love, in a brand new guise, the gang drew in a rampaging crowd of hipster dudes and dudettes for two floors of blockbustin’ beats and a whole lot more at one of the hottest hangouts in town. Mindwarping action in the basement saw The Duchess of Pork taking on Dirtbox’s Gibson and Blu Peter for trip-tastic grooves that had us dancing round our clutch bags amidst the strange-haired melee. Meanwhile, John Sizzle and A Man To Pet rocked floor-length fashions at ground level for dazzling deck duties interspersed with karaoke-style numbers on the floor. Elsewhere, the proceedings spilled onto the smoking terrace as homos popped out for a fag and watched the weird and wonderful procession pass by on Kingsland Road, before heading back into the fray and partying into the small hours. The thrills continue at Dalston Superstore this weekend with Flhoston Paradise on Friday and Little Gay Brother on Saturday!

30 31 A new top for the Grand Dame There are few cities in the world that can rival London. Combining rich historical heritage with ultra-modern architecture we are a city that relishes the future, but revels in tradition. This week, rather discretly and without fuss, Soho was treated to a revival of history, of sorts, when Comptons of Soho received a facelift - literally! Already an imposing landmark on gay Soho’s main thoroughfare, she’s now bigger, bolder and better than ever. What’s more, as you’d expect from such a monumental building, the new look comes with a whole lot o’ history…

QX CHANNELLED Virginia Woolf and E.M. Forster amidst the literary-themed splendour of New Bloomsbury Set as the Marchmont Street landmark urged its urbane clientele to support Opening Doors London last Sunday. Aiming to meet the needs of vulnerable over-50s in the LGBT community with a range of services including befriending, social groups and activities, sadly, a large chunk of ODL’s funding will be coming to an end in April with the charity desperately needing to make up the shortfall. So, what better way to show our appreciation for what the previous LGBT generation fought for – and achieved – than with a regular monthly donation? On hand were the ODL ‘ambassadors’, armed with direct debit forms, to rustle up some financial commitment (£5 a month – the price of a drink) amongst the generous throng. Meanwhile, there was plenty more to keep the crowd occupied, with delightful DJ sounds, beguiling bar staff and a bijou ambience that keeps the New Bloomsbury Set regulars coming back week after week. Here’s to one of the capital’s loveliest watering holes and one of London’s worthiest of LGBT charities – we hope you get the all cash you need. CK6: CK GOES TO HOLLYWOOD 09/03/14 HALFWAY TO HEAVEN, 7 DUNCANNON STREET, WC2N 4JF WORDS BY JACKIE JOCKSTRAP PHOTOS BY ANGUS WHARTON PHOTOGRAPHY
WORD GOT OUT that there was red carpet and champagne being rocked out at Halfway to Heaven at 3pm for their CK6 event and so natch we were outside the door at 2.55pm, clutching our very own champagne glass we’d bought for the occasion. After sipping our way through an hour of free-flowing aperitifs, we were in a rather good mood for the fabulous CK taking to the stage for Part One with the first three awards handed out in-between songs, and by 6pm we had to be told to shush from singing our own champagne- inspired songs (we were taking everyone – mostly unwillingly – back to Paris circa Piaf) so that Part Two could get underway. Alexis St Claire recreating the dinner scene from ‘When Harry Met Sally’, Mitzi Macintosh performed a Hollywood medley, including a fantastic mash-up of Joan Crawford and Meredith Brooks’ ‘I’m a Bitch’, and finally Aaron Alexander showed us just why he’s CK’s favourite male singer. As the CK Disco descended from 7-8pm, we were strutting our feather- boa stuff like the rooster that’d swallowed the acid tab, until at 8pm the encore took over with Mrs Moore and Tanya Hyde! CK had the entire audience in their hands all day and when they presented two special awards to Kelly’s dad and Crystal’s dear friend Sam, the audience was in tears… “Who’d have thought that a single song sang at a charity event six years ago would lead to CK and the great time had by us on Sunday?” said Crystal, whilst Kelly added “a huge thanks to our special guest Aaron, Mitzi and Alexis, and of course to our lovely audience… We really are nothing without you!” Well, we’re already cracking open the corks for CK7!
