Issues of Image and Performance in the Beatles' Films
“All I’ve got to do is Act Naturally”: Issues of Image and Performance in the Beatles’ Films Submitted by Stephanie Anne Piotrowski, AHEA, to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English (Film Studies), 01 October 2008. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which in not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. (signed)…………Stephanie Piotrowski ……………… Piotrowski 2 Abstract In this thesis, I examine the Beatles’ five feature films in order to argue how undermining generic convention and manipulating performance codes allowed the band to control their relationship with their audience and to gain autonomy over their output. Drawing from P. David Marshall’s work on defining performance codes from the music, film, and television industries, I examine film form and style to illustrate how the Beatles’ filmmakers used these codes in different combinations from previous pop and classical musicals in order to illicit certain responses from the audience. In doing so, the role of the audience from passive viewer to active participant changed the way musicians used film to communicate with their fans. I also consider how the Beatles’ image changed throughout their career as reflected in their films as a way of charting the band’s journey from pop stars to musicians, while also considering the social and cultural factors represented in the band’s image. -

Q-X clubs t bars t cabaret t life No 1093 18 February 2016 EST. 1986 18 Suitable only for persons of 18 years and over QX wishes the Grande Dame a Happy 30th! RYNBHB[JOFDPNtRYHBZMPOEPO QX_1093_Cover.indd 1 16/02/2016 18:43 Comptons of Soho 30 YEARS AT THE HEART OF GAY SOHO As we celebrate the Grand Dame of Soho’s 30th birthday as an offical gay venue, we have a chat with some of her nearest and dearest. They know her best and they, in addition to their hundreds of regulars, make her what she is. Happy Birthday old girl! Neil Hodgson, Landlord Comptons as a gay bar was evolving long before the 1980’s and there are reports of metropolitan police warnings about sodomy on the premises as early as the 1940’s. It was 1986 that bar was officially declared as gay. I’ve been fortunate enough to have been General Manager here for 17 of those 30 years. Together we have witnessed and survived a lot together, bombings, hate crimes, riots, the loss of some very special people and places over the years including an economic recession and the ongoing gentrification of Soho. Despite my keenness to dress up in uniforms I still only very much remain a caretaker of an institution that belongs to the people that support it also who have made it the solid institution it is today and still she continues to grow. Comptons to me is a real place and its people, it’s also my work and my home. -

Freemuse-The-State-Of-Artistic-Freedom
THE STATE OF ARTISTIC FREEDOM 2018 FREEMUSE THE STATE OF ARTISTIC FREEDOM 2018 1 Freemuse is an independent international organisation advocating for and defending freedom of artistic expression. We believe that at the heart of violations of artistic freedom is the effort to silence opposing or less preferred views and values by those in power – politically, religiously or societally – mostly due to fear of their transformative effect. With this assumption, we can address root causes rather than just symptoms – if we hold violators accountable. Our approach to artistic freedom is human rights-based as it provides an international legal framework and lays out the principles of accountability, equality and non-discrimination, and participation. ©2018 Freemuse. Un Traductor Directed by Rodrigo & Sebastián Barriuso Un Traductor
Un Traductor Directed by Rodrigo & Sebastián Barriuso Un Traductor Logline A Russian Literature professor at the University of Havana is ordered to work as a translator for child victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster when they’re sent to Cuba for medical treatment. Based on a true story. Synopsis In the wake of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, Malin, a Russian literature professor at The University of Havana, is sent to translate between Cuban doctors and children sent from the USSR for medical treatment. Torn from the abstract world of academia and forced into the relentlessly real world of medicine, Malin becomes increasingly depressed. When he meets a child who tells him a story, Malin connects with the kids and finds his way through. Just as he adapts to his new job, the Berlin Wall falls and Cuba enters the deepest economic crisis the island has ever known. But Malin is now so entrenched in the lives of the Chernobyl Children that he doesn’t notice his young family suffering. He must find his way back to his wife and child through the lessons he learns at the hospital – and become a better person on the way. Here Comes CHRISTMAS!

The Kings Cross Steelers kick-off the QX festive countdown! print + web iPad + iPhone ings of KChristmas This week’s cover stars are the drop-dead gorgeous Kings Cross Steelers! Why? Well, take a look… we simply couldn’t (and wouldn’t) say ‘no’… boys wearing the smallest swimwear I’ve ever witnessed. Did I mention it’s a real drag working with them? Once we managed to get Rose’s posture to look like something under the age of 90 and to stop talking, the shooting of this week’s QX front cover was a hoot. Look closely, the stocking covering the bits of the guy next to me was often discarded between takes… not that I looked, of course. Over the last few weeks, to help these great lads promote this calendar has been so much fun. Reenacting all the calendar poses live onstage at the Two Brewers was a pleasure! I tried to stop Tom Whitaker taking all his clothes off, but he just insisted on flashing his bubble butt to the world. One thing, which will stay with me forever, is recreating Trisha’s shower picture. Photo by Felipe Tozzato Felipe Photo by Drenching him in ice cold water as he grinded around in pants was a dream. Until he then decided to pin me against the wall of the stage Few can argue that La Voix works hard rugby guys, we had to move downstairs as the and simulate everything from sex to a blowjob! for the money… and never more-so than floor was giving way! A real ground-breaking This would have been more enjoyable had my when she’s working The Steelers for a bit group of guys! I was going to suggest we used parents not happened to be visiting that weekend of on-stage nudity! Rose Garden as a support beam, but she was and came to watch the show! Awkward! busy in the toilets.
