  • CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS of FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and Counting…
5 JAN 18 1 FEB 18 1 | 5 JAN 18 - 1 FEB 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and counting… As you’ll spot deep within this programme (and hinted at on the front cover) January 2018 sees the start of a series of films that lead up to celebrations in October marking the 40th birthday of Filmhouse as a public cinema on Lothian Road. We’ve chosen to screen a film from every year we’ve been bringing the very best cinema to the good people of Edinburgh, and while it is tremendous fun looking back through the history of what has shown here, it was quite an undertaking going through all the old programmes and choosing what to show, and a bit of a personal journey for me as one who started coming here as a customer in the mid-80s (I know, I must have started very young...). At that time, I’d no idea that Filmhouse had only been in existence for less than 10 years – it seemed like such an established, essential institution and impossible to imagine it not existing in a city such as Edinburgh. My only hope is that the cinema is as important today as I felt it was then, and that the giants on whose shoulders we currently stand feel we’re worthy of their legacy. I hope you can join us for at least some of the screenings on this trip down memory lane... And now, back to the now.

  • Issues of Image and Performance in the Beatles' Films
“All I’ve got to do is Act Naturally”: Issues of Image and Performance in the Beatles’ Films Submitted by Stephanie Anne Piotrowski, AHEA, to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English (Film Studies), 01 October 2008. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which in not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. (signed)…………Stephanie Piotrowski ……………… Piotrowski 2 Abstract In this thesis, I examine the Beatles’ five feature films in order to argue how undermining generic convention and manipulating performance codes allowed the band to control their relationship with their audience and to gain autonomy over their output. Drawing from P. David Marshall’s work on defining performance codes from the music, film, and television industries, I examine film form and style to illustrate how the Beatles’ filmmakers used these codes in different combinations from previous pop and classical musicals in order to illicit certain responses from the audience. In doing so, the role of the audience from passive viewer to active participant changed the way musicians used film to communicate with their fans. I also consider how the Beatles’ image changed throughout their career as reflected in their films as a way of charting the band’s journey from pop stars to musicians, while also considering the social and cultural factors represented in the band’s image.

  • “The Gospel According to Sting” Proper 17C (September 1, 2019
1 “The Gospel According to Sting” Proper 17C (September 1, 2019) Rev. Dr. David A. Kaden >>Put a hand on our shoulder and point us in the right direction. Put our hand on someone’s shoulder and let it matter. Amen<< On July 10th, NPR’s “All Songs Considered” released a special called the “Tiny Desk Concert,” which featured two musicians performing together: Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner - also known as “Sting,” once the lead singer of the band The Police - and reggae star Orville Richard Burrell - also known as “Shaggy.”1 Sting and Shaggy - an Englishman and a Jamaican. The two have collaborated on projects before - they put out an album together in 2018 and went on tour - and they’re buddies. Shaggy affectionately calls Sting, “Sting-y.” On the day they sat down together at NPR’s Tiny Desk, which looks like a set in a Barnes and Noble store, they played several songs, including Sting’s Englishman in New York. That song was first released in February of 1988, and it has a little something for everyone: a reggae beat for reggae fans; a saxophone for jazz fans; strings for classical music fans; Sting’s voice for Police fans; it’s light-hearted for pop fans; and it was performed most recently in an NPR studio for….NPR fans. The song’s lyrics tell a story about living in the U.S. but being from a different country - living as an Englishman in New York. Sitting in NPR’s Tiny Desk studio, Sting played the guitar, Shaggy clapped the beat, and Sting sang these words: I don’t take coffee, I take tea, my dear / I like my toast done on one side / And you can hear it in my accent when I talk / I’m an Englishman in New York / See me walking down Fifth Avenue / A walking cane here at my side / I take it everywhere I walk / I’m an Englishman in New York When Shaggy took over the lyrics he changed the words and sang, “I’m a Jamaican in New York,” delighting the small crowd of fans in the NPR studio that day.

  • Imagine... John Mortimer
john mortimer owning up at 80 john mortimer owning up at 80 In the year he celebrates his 80th birthday, John Mortimer, the barrister turned author who became a household name with the creation of his popular drama Rumpole of the Bailey, is about to publish his latest book, Where There’s a Will. Imagine captures him pondering on life and offering advice to his children, grandchildren and in his own words “anyone who’ll listen”. John Mortimer’s wit and love of life shines through in this reflection on his life and career. The film eavesdrops on his 80th birthday celebrations, visits his childhood home – where he still lives today – and goes to his old law chambers. There are interviews with the people who know him best, including Richard Eyre, Jeremy Paxman, Kathy Lette, Leslie Phillips and Geoffrey Robertson QC. Imagine looks at the extraordinary influence Mortimer has had on the legal system in the UK.As a civil rights campaigner and defender par excellence in some of the most high-profile, inflammatory trials ever in the UK – such as the Oz trial and the Gay News case – he brought about fundamental changes at the heart of British law. His experience in the courts informs all of Mortimer’s writing, from plays, novels and articles to the infamous Rumpole of the Bailey, whose central character became a compelling mouthpiece for Mortimer’s liberal political views. Imagine looks at the great man of law, political campaigner, wit, gentleman, actor, ladies’ man and champagne socialist who captured the hearts of the British public..

  • Professor Robert Beveridge FRSA, University of Sassari
Culture, Tourism, Europe and External Relations Committee Scotland’s Screen Sector Written submission from Professor Robert Beveridge FRSA, University of Sassari 1. Introduction While it is important that the Scottish Parliament continues to investigate and monitor the state of the creative and screen industries in Scotland, the time has surely come for action rather than continued deliberation(s) The time has surely come when we need to stop having endless working parties and spending money on consultants trying to work out what to do. Remember the ‘Yes Minister’ Law of Inverse Relevance ‘ ‘The less you intend to do about something, the more you have to keep talking about it ‘ ‘Yes Minister’ Episode 1: Open Government Therefore, please note that we already know what to do. That is: 1.1 - Appoint the right people with the vision leadership and energy to succeed. 1.2 - Provide a positive legislative/strategic/policy framework for support. 1.3 - Provide better budgets and funding for investment and/or leverage for the same. (You already have access to the data on existing funding for projects and programmes of all kinds. If the Scottish Government wishes to help to improve performance in the screen sector, there will need to be a step change in investment. There is widespread agreement that more is needed.) 1.4 Give them space to get on with it. That is what happened with the National Theatre of Scotland. This is what happened with MG Alba. Both signal success stories. Do likewise with the Screen Industries in Scotland 2. Context Some ten years ago the Scottish Government established the Scottish Broadcasting Commission.
