From Alienated To Connected: An Examination Of Religion In The Literature Of Su Xuelin, Bing Xin, And Xu Dishan Abstract The literature of Bing Xin 冰心 (birth name Xie Wanying 谢婉莹) (1900-1999), Su Xuelin 苏雪林 (1897-1999), and Xu Dishan 许地山 (1893-1941) concerning religiosity is dismissed in previous scholarship by C.T. Hsia, Lewis Robinson, Marian Galik, Chen Weihua, and Yang Jianlong as reflecting simply the personal experiences of the authors themselves rather than as political or social commentary. I argue for a reading of these three authors’ literature that acknowledges its efforts to engage with contemporaneous debates on the relationship of religion and modernization. Using close-reading and intertextual analysis, I argue that within the narratives of these three authors’ literature, identifying as religious or participating in religious cultural phenomena is for protagonists linked to cultivating the skill of focusing on the well-being of others. This practice in turn leads to greater happiness and contentment on an individual level for the protagonists, who form deeper connections with others and overcome their sense of social alienation. I conclude that the category “religion” is used in the narratives of Bing Xin’s, Su Xuelin’s, and Xu Dishan’s literature to frame certain skills important to forming connections with other people as “other” than social, in other words as ostensibly existing outside of the social realm that is causing protagonists to feel alienated in the first place. This then allows protagonists to turn to these skills as a set of allegedly objective guidelines for overcoming their social alienation and becoming happier and more contented on an individual level. Xu Associate Professor Rania Huntington, University of Wisconsin at Madison Abstract From a comparative standpoint, the American Protestant missionary enterprise in China was built on a paradox in cross-cultural encounters. In order to convert the Chinese—whose religion they rejected—American missionaries adopted strategies of assimilation (e.g. learning Chinese and associating with the Chinese) to facilitate their work. My dissertation explores how American Protestant missionaries negotiated the rejection-assimilation paradox involved in their missionary work and forged a cultural identification with China in their English novels set in China between the late Qing and 1930. I argue that the missionaries’ novelistic expression of that identification was influenced by many factors: their targeted audience, their motives, their work, and their perceptions of the missionary enterprise, cultural difference, and their own missionary identity. Hence, missionary novels may not necessarily be about conversion, the missionaries’ primary objective but one that suggests their resistance to Chinese culture, or at least its religion. Instead, the missionary novels I study culminate in a non-conversion theme that problematizes the possibility of cultural assimilation and identification over ineradicable racial and cultural differences.

Dr. Hong-Sen Yan, vice president of NCKU, hosted the conference, in which he shared his experience in planning and preserving NCKU’s historical heritage. A university should identify its distinctive characteristic and grow with it to achieve excellence in education, said Dr. Yan, adding that it takes time and effort to keep the artifacts with historical significance. Dr. Kuang-Nan Huang, minister without portfolio of the Executive Yuan, Academician Ovid Tzeng of Academia Sinica, and Mr. Chen-Yu Nien, deputy director of Bureau of Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Culture, were present at the conference on behalf of their organizations. They praised NCKU for its resolution and dedication to preserving the school’s historical assets. Many world-renowned universities have their archives to keep the non-current records of the university, allowing the tradition and the spirit to pass down, according to Tzeng, who said NCKU’s aspiration to enlighten the students with the historical heritage is admirable. A powerful concept which, in the case of China’s modern history, evokes the most controversial reactions, ranging from intercultural exchange to the imposition of alien concepts and the outright imposition of colonial superstructures. Barbara Hoster’s doctoral research topic is, however, of a distinctly different nature. Rather than analysing the impact of Western missions overseas, Hoster dissects the mind of a young woman, who had arrived during the 1920s in France as a student and whose profuse writings focused on the encounter of different cultural, political and not least gender-related discourses in the shape of people who became part of the young author’s life. “Conversion to Christianity in modern Chinese literature: Su Xuelin’s novel Jixin (Heart of Thorns, 1929)” thus describes the tribulations of a young woman who felt at odds with the ‘progressive’ winds which were sweeping the intellectual landscape of the 1920s, and who reacted by seeking solace in the spiritual world which she encountered during her sojourn at the Institut Franco-Chinois in Lyon during the early 1920s.

    Notes Introduction: Women and Feminism in the Literary History of Early-Twentieth-Century China 1. These various renderings of “feminism” can be found in texts from the period covered in this study. While often used interchangeably, they carry slightly dif- ferent connotations. 2. In addition to calling for a radical transformation of Confucian social mores and values prejudicial to women, early feminists also demanded concrete recognition of women’s social and political rights. Prominent among these were the eradication of foot binding, equal rights in inheritance, access to edu- cation and the professions, marital freedoms, including the right to choose one’s own partner and to divorce, the right to vote and be elected to public office, and the abolition of the practice of child-brides, concubinage, and prostitution. 3.
