Box 1346 Ann Arbor. Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT This is a study of twentieth century Chinese women writers’ autobiographies as they were written and received both in China and in the West. This dissertation fills a significant gap in modem Chinese literature and in the global study of autobiography by providing a full-length discussion of the autobiographical texts written by Su Xuelin, Lu Yin, Xie Bingying, Yang Buwei, and Chen Hengzhe. In this dissertation I place their autobiographies in the historical and cultural contexts of their writing / translation while engaging in critical analysis and close reading. I treat their texts theoretically as autobiography. Therefore I question their previous use by critics as biographical material in interpreting the authors’ fictions. Through tracing where their autobiographies are continuous with and where divergent from traditional Chinese life writings, this study at once brings out the embeddedness of these texts in the historical circumstances of twentieth-century China and their intricate connections with autobiographical conventions in the West. I also discuss the presence of Western autobiographical discourse in the formation of these texts in order to highlight that these texts are cross-cultural products. By engaging with both autobiographies written for Chinese audiences and those written / translated for Western audiences, this dissertation addresses issues that are relevant to literary studies, women’s studies, gender studies as well as autobiography criticism and theorizing. One hundred and forty thousand soldiers all took off their armor, How is it that there was not even one who was a man?” Lady Fei1 Introduction On February 23rd, 965, Meng Chang 孟昶, the king of Shu 蜀, surrendered to a Song army under the command of Wang Quanbin 王全斌. The Song army had conquered the Shu kingdom (modern Sichuan) in a month, a surprisingly short time given the natural bar- riers that protected it. Although the Shu government fell quickly, the depredations of the Song army that followed instigated widespread rebellion. To make matters worse, part of the Song army mutinied when the generals imposed new discipline on it. In order to protect Chengdu 成都 from the rebellion, Wang ordered the massacre of 27,000 surrendered Shu soldiers camped within the city. A further 60,000 Shu men were killed in the course of suppressing the rebel- lion and putting down the mutiny. My focus in the discussion that follows is on the effect that con- quest and rebellion in Sichuan had upon the Song court during the reign of the first emperor, posthumously known as Taizu 太祖.     oxford world’s classics THE FIRST EMPEROR Sima Qian’s Historical Records (Shiji), from which this selection is taken, is the most famous Chinese historical work, which not only established a pattern for later Chinese historical writing, but was also much admired for its literary qualities, not only in China, but also in Japan, where it became available as early as the eighth cen- tury ad. The work is vast and complex, and to appreciate its nature it is necessary to make a selection of passages concerning a particu- lar period. To this end the short-lived Qin Dynasty, which unified China in the late third century bc, has been chosen for this transla- tion as a key historical period which well illustrates Sima’s method. Sima himself lived from 145 bc to about 86 bc. He inherited the post of Grand Historiographer from his father, and was so deter- mined to complete his work that he suffered the penalty of castra- tion rather than the more honourable alternative of death when he fell foul of the Emperor. Raymond Dawson was an Emeritus Fellow of Wadham College, Oxford. He was Editor of The Legacy of China (1964) and his other publications include The Chinese Chameleon: An Analysis of European Conceptions of Chinese Civilization (1967), Imperial China (1972), The Chinese Experience (1978), Confucius (1982), A New Introduction to Classical Chinese (1984), and the Analects (Oxford World’s Classics, 1993). In 2000, Bu defeated the Azerbaijani chess talent Teimour Radjabov by 6½-1½ in an eight-game Future World Champions Match organized by Garry Kasparov and was considered a super talent for future world champion contender. In 2004, Bu became the chess champion of China.

I argue that the fluidity of satiric writing in the 1930s and 1940s undermines the certainties of the “satiric triangle” and gives rise to what I call, variously, self-satire, self-counteractive satire, empathetic satire and ambiguous satire. It has been standard in the study of satire to assume fixed and fairly stable relations among satirist, reader, and satirized object. This “satiric triangle” highlights the opposition of satirist and satirized object and has generally assumed an alignment by the reader with the satirist and the satirist’s judgments of the satirized object. Literary critics and theorists have usually shared these assumptions about the basis of satire. I argue, however, that beginning with late-Qing exposé fiction, satire in modern Chinese literature has shown an unprecedented uncertainty and fluidity in the relations among satirist, reader and satirized object.

    What Maketh the Man? Towards a Psychobiographical Study of Lin Yutang Roslyn Joy Ricci School of Social Science/Centre for Asian Studies University of Adelaide November 2013 Abstract Dr Lin Yutang, philologist, philosopher, novelist and inventor was America’s most influential native informant on Chinese culture from the mid-1930s to the mid-1950s. Theoretical analysis of Lin’s accomplishments is an ongoing focus of research on both sides of the North Pacific: this study suggests why he made particular choices and reacted in specific ways during his lifetime. Psychobiographical theory forms the framework for this research because it provides a structure for searching within texts to understand why Lin made choices that led to his lasting contribution to transcultural literature. It looks at foundational beliefs established in his childhood and youth, at why significant events in adulthood either reinforced or altered these and why some circumstances initiated new beliefs. Lin’s life is viewed through thematic lenses: foundational factors; scholarship and vocation; the influence of women; peer input; and religion, philosophy and humour. Most of his empirical life journey is already documented: this thesis suggests why he felt compelled to act and write as he did. In doing so, it offers possible scenarios of why Lin’s talents developed and why his life journey evolved in a particular manner, place and time. For example, it shows the way in which basic beliefs—formed during Lin’s childhood and youth and later specific events in adulthood—affected his life’s journey. It analyses how his exposure to the theories of Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism affected his early childhood basic belief—Christianity—and argues that he accommodated traditional Chinese beliefs within Christianity.

    Chinese Women in the Early Twentieth Century: Activists and Rebels Remy Lepore Undergraduate Honors Thesis Department of History University of Colorado, Boulder Defended: October 25th, 2019 Committee Members: Primary Advisor: Timothy Weston, Department of History Secondary Reader: Katherine Alexander, Department of Chinese Honors Representative: Miriam Kadia, Department of History Abstract It is said that women hold up half the sky, but what roles do women really play and how do they interact with politics and society? In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Chinese women reacted in a variety of ways to the social and political changes of the era. Some women were actively engaged in politics while others were not. Some women became revolutionaries and fought for reform in China, other women were more willing to work with and within the established cultural framework. Discussion of reforms and reformers in the late nineteenth-early twentieth centuries are primarily focused on men and male activism; however, some women felt very strongly about reform and were willing to die in order to help China modernize. This thesis explores the life experiences and activism of five women who lived at the end of China’s imperial period and saw the birth of the Republican period. By analyzing and comparing the experiences of Zheng Yuxiu, Yang Buwei, Xie Bingying, Wang Su Chun, and Ning Lao Taitai, this thesis helps to unlock the complex and often hidden lives of Chinese women in modern Chinese history.
