By Christopher Robins Abandoning Medicine to Minister to the Chinese Spirit through Literature In January of 1906 in the northeastern Japanese city of Sendai, China’s most famous modern writer, Lu Xun (Zhou Shuren 1881-1936), claimed to have experienced a life- changing epiphany that led him to abandon his medical studies and “devote himself to the creation of a literature that would minister to the ailing Chinese psyche.” [1] The now famous “magic lantern (slide) incident” allegedly took place at the end of Lu Xun’s bacteriology class at the Sendai Medical School. Lu Xun later recounted that the Japanese medical students were roused into a patriotic frenzy by scenes of the war,Through the lens of Chinese nationalism after culminating in reverberating chants ofWorld War II and the victory of the communists “banzai!” One scene showed a Chinese prisoner in 1949, the slide incident came to represent about to be executed in Manchuria by a Lu Xun’s prescient decision to reject Japan’s Japanese soldier and the caption described this bellicose nationalism and Western-style science man as a Russian spy (see image 1). -

Interpretations of the Chinese May Fourth era often reduce the period to one of wholesale westernization and cultural self- repudiation. Euro-American notions of the self often reify ideologies of individuality, individualism, rationalism, evolution, and a “self-versus-society” dichotomy, viewing such positions as universal and applicable for judging decolonizing others. To interrogate this assumption, I examine the writing of Lu Xun and Xiao Hong, two May Fourth writers whose fictional characters present innovative, integrated, heterogeneous selves that transcend Western ii critical models. This “full spectrum of selves” sustains contradicting pulls of identity—the mental (the rational, the individual), the bodily (the survivalist, the affective), the cerebral (the moral), the social (the relational, the organismic), as well as the spiritual and the cosmic. -

He is known to have played a central role in the development of Republican educational philosophies and institutions, with a legacy that continues to inform education in China. Studies tend to interpret Cai Yuanpei’s approach to aesthetic education in light of his educational experience in Germany, regarding him as a Kantian scholar. However, the Confucian roots of his aesthetic education seldom draw scholarly attention. To fill the gap, this article examines Cai’s vision of aesthetic education based on both his academic background in the East and his knowledge of Western philosophy and maps out his influence on and legacy in aesthetic education in China. It argues that Cai’s vision of aesthetic education has influenced modern Chinese education in three main ways: by bridging the gap between moral education and aesthetic education to nurture citizenship, by encouraging aesthetic education for whole-person development, and by adopting an interdisciplinary approach to school aesthetic education. The article concludes by reflecting on the enduring value of Cai’s vision of aesthetic education to modern Chinese education. By its very nature the short story affords the writer the opportunity to introduce swiftly any developments in ideology, theme or style. Scholars have interpreted Chinese fiction published during 1979 as indicative of a "change" in the development of 20th century Chinese literature. This study examines a number of short stories from 1979 in order to determine the extent of that "change". The first two chapters concern the establishment of a representative database and the adoption of viable methods of interpretation. An important, although much neglected, phenomenon in the make-up of 1979 literature are the works which appeared in so-called "nonofficial" journals. -

Religions of foreign origin have shaped Chinese cultural history much stronger than generally assumed and continue to have impact on Chinese society in varying regional degrees. The essays collected in the present volume put a special emphasis on these “foreign” and less familiar aspects of Chinese religion. Apart from an introductory article on Daoism (the BKGA 85 BKGA Religion in China prototypical autochthonous religion of China), the volume reflects China’s encounter with religions of the so-called Western Regions, starting from the adoption of Indian Buddhism to early settlements of religious minorities from the Near East (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and the early modern debates between Confucians and Christian missionaries. Contemporary Major Concepts and religious minorities, their specific social problems, and their regional diversities are discussed in the cases of Abrahamitic traditions in China. The volume therefore contributes to our understanding of most recent and Minority Positions potentially violent religio-political phenomena such as, for instance, Islamist movements in the People’s Republic of China. Research Express@NCKU - News Release Research Express@NCKU Volume 22 Issue 8 - July 20, 2012 [ http://research.ncku.edu.tw/re/news/e/20120720/1.html ] NCKU touts efforts to preserve cultural heritage on campus NCKU Press Center [Tainan, Taiwan, 3 July 2012] National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, held a news press conference in Taipei June 28 to share the school’s historical treasures and to call for joint efforts among educational institutes nationwide to preserve cultural heritage on campus. Dr. Hong-Sen Yan, vice president of NCKU, hosted the conference, in which he shared his experience in planning and preserving NCKU’s historical heritage. A university should identify its distinctive characteristic and grow with it to achieve excellence in education, said Dr. Yan, adding that it takes time and effort to keep the artifacts with historical significance. Dr. Kuang-Nan Huang, minister without portfolio of the Executive Yuan, Academician Ovid Tzeng of Academia Sinica, and Mr. Chen-Yu Nien, deputy director of Bureau of Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Culture, were present at the conference on behalf of their organizations. They praised NCKU for its resolution and dedication to preserving the school’s historical assets. Many world-renowned universities have their archives to keep the non-current records of the university, allowing the tradition and the spirit to pass down, according to Tzeng, who said NCKU’s aspiration to enlighten the students with the historical heritage is admirable. Dr. Huang emphasized the importance of time and resources in promoting cultural heritage. He noted that people are the key elements of culture assets. -
