Military marches and Beatles' songs to be performed in Belmont

By JIM CLARK

BELMONT—Two very different kinds of music performances will take place in Belmont in the coming days—the 矣rst on Sunday, Aug. 28, and the second on Sunday, Sept. 4. Both performances are free.

The 22-piece Newmont Military Band, based in the Connecticut Valley between the border between New Hampshire and Vermont, will play at the village bandstand in back of the public library and near the Belmont Mill on Mill Street, on Aug. 28. Activities start at 1 p.m. with the concert scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

The band was formed by Larry Jones of Windsor, Vt. in 1995 as a recreation of a small town brass band of the late 1800s. It originally was a cornet band with clarinets added a couple of years later. The band also contains alto, tenor, and baritone horns as well as tubas. The Newmont Military Band's music sheets are borrowed from the archives of the American Band of Claremont, which played in the late 19th and early 20th century. Intended as authentic late 19th century music, it is scored differently than music played by modern horn bands, and the overall effect is a different kind of sound.

All band members wear late 19th century-type uniforms. The band plays songs, Civil War songs, marches (including those of John Phillip Sousa), and dances and songs from old plantations. The band's musicians come from New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts. Since its inception in 1995, the band has performed at venues in the Granite State, the Green Mountain State, and Maine.

Meanwhile, are coming to town. Well, not exactly The Beatles but a good facsimile.

On Sunday, Sept. 4 at 6:30 p.m., Studio Two—a Beatles tribute band—will perform a two hour concert near the town library and bandstand. It's part of an end of summer block party. Those who attend are invited to bring their picnic lunches and blankets for the show. Folding chairs will be available.

Studio Two features graduates of the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, all of them Beatles devotees. The group consists of Stephen Murray as John , Al Francis as Paul McCartney, Robert Murray as , and Justin Fyfe as .

Studio Two is one of several Beatles tribute bands that perform in the United States, and the group has been tabbed as the best Beatles band in New . Studio Two concentrates on 's early and mid-period, before the release of the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club" album in 1967.
