It was really an interesting statement to me; it made me think of two things, the first one is the intention behind this statement, while the second was the attitude of Kurds, especially Kurd musicians, towards researchers and researching. As for the first thing, I felt that there was a problem, maybe a social or psychological, of the Kurdish people in general, and the musicians in particular.

This thesis has been approved Assoc. Prof. Duygu Köksal ____________________________ (Thesis Advisor) Prof. Ay şe Bu ğra ____________________________ Assoc. Prof. M. Asım Karaömerlio ğlu ____________________________ by the Atatürk Institute for Modern Turkish History at Bo ğaziçi University on 1 September 2009 ii An abstract of the Thesis of Ahmet Alı ş for the degree of Master of Arts from the Ataturk Institute for Modern Turkish History of Bo ğaziçi University to be taken in September 2009 Title: The Process of the Politicization of the Kurdish Identity in Turkey: the Kurds and the Turkish Labor Party (1961–1971) This thesis examines a much-misunderstood period of mobilization and politicization of Kurds in Turkey, a period that has often been assumed to have been an era of revival for Kurdish nationalism. It rejects the idea of revival of Kurdish nationalism during the 1960s. It postulates that what happened during this period can be seen only as formative years for the next generation of Kurdish nationalist who inherited so much from the interaction between Kurdish ethnicity and socialist terminology of those years.

  • The Kurds: a Contemporary Overview
The Kurds The position of the 19 million Kurds is an extremely complex one. Their territory is divided between 5 sovereign states, none of which has a Kurdish majority. They speak widely divergent dialects, and are also divided by religious affiliations and social factors. It has taken the tragic and horrifying events in Iraq this year to bring the Kurds to the centre of the world stage, but their particular problems, and their considerable geo-political importance, have been the source of growing concern and interest during the last two to three decades. There is a remarkable dearth of reliable and up-to-date information about the Kurds, which this book remedies. Its contributors cover social and political issues, legal questions, religion, language, and the modern history of the Kurds in Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Syria and the Soviet Union. The Kurds will be an invaluable source of reference for students and specialists in Middle East studies, and those concerned with wider questions of nationalism and cultural identity. It also offers extremely useful background information for those with a professional concern for the numerous Kurdish immigrants and asylum seekers in Western Europe and North America. 1. Baba Tahirê ‘Uryan Divanı (1010- 1055): Dubeytî ismindeki Di- vanı mevcuttur.
