A mother of three, Erma lost a 21-year-old son. She raised and provided for his children and continues to take care of her special needs daughter. A vivacious 62 years old, she works as a paraprofessional for special needs adults while baling breast cancer.

Her daughter Elisa suﬀers from heart defects that strap the family budget. This year, Elisa will undergo yet another operation to replace a faulty heart valve. Carol works as a Youth Coordinator for the aer school program at Latino Family Services in Detroit.

Michigan Veterans Foundation He is a patriot, but like so many others who bravely served our country, he would never describe himself as such. A.C. dedicated his youth to two tours in Vietnam at the height of the war. Proud of his service, he lives with his comrades in arms at the Michigan Veterans Foundation Detroit Veterans Center.

Rich, who prided himself as dad and breadwinner for the family, suffered a massive stroke that le the family penniless and him disabled. The family fought back, only to suffer the loss of their home and possessions to fire this year.

He faithfully volunteers weekly at the Silver Lake Church of the Nazarene in Pontiac and distributes food on his own to house-bound senior neighbors while also caring for his wife who suﬀers from cancer.

Eyainna wants to lead a gym and academic center for kids in Detroit who need the academic support and guidance that she receives at the Downtown Boxing Gym. Federal Poverty Level Family of Four The Income Gap A comprehensive study, commissioned by the , Food Bank Council of Michigan and entitled ANNUAL INCOME The Self-Sufficiency Standard For Michigan 2017, dramatically demonstrates the disparity between the federal poverty guidelines, which serve as the Household Income standard definition of poverty for households to Meet Basic Life Needs† and individuals, versus the minimum income 2 Adults, 2 Children required today to pay for basic needs like food, rent, The Self-Sufficiency Standard For Michigan Report transportation, childcare and healthcare. The study reports that a significant portion of the population falls into an income gap between the federal , definition of poverty and the minimum income ANNUAL INCOME necessary to meet basic expenses. Many of these , people are food insecure or need emergency food ANNUAL INCOME at points throughout the year.

A New Yardstick to Address Food Insecurity Armed with this Self-Sufficiency Study and the OAKLAND Food Insecurity Index* and using grant funds MACOMB awarded by The Kresge Foundation to Forgoen Harvest, we intend to facilitate a comprehensive , picture of the need for food in metro Detroit. ANNUAL INCOME This year we initiated an assessment that will encompass each of our 250 Forgotten Harvest partner agencies. This agency-by-agency survey will enable us to measure the numbers of people we serve, offer insight to their needs and identify underserved geographic locations in metro Detroit. Nine underserved locations have already been WAYNE identified through the work this year. Our work will continue throughout the upcoming fiscal year and help us to define a long-term strategic course of action, refine our innovative rescue model and quantify the resources that will †Household income required to meet basic expenses like food, rent, transportation, child care, and health care. Nearly one in six people in our service area live in poverty according to federal guidelines. For a family of four, poverty is deﬁned as an income at or below $24,600.

Today, many metro Detroit families are stru§gling to stretch wages to meet the cost of basic life necessities. Though they are not deemed “poor” by the official measure of poverty, they simply lack enough income to meet the rising cost of living.
