Issue No 34 13 June 2014

U15 TEAM BEAT ETON (7-6) TO CONTINUE THEIR UNBEATED RECORD The unbeaten under 15 tennis squad were going into this game extremely nervous not to lose their outstand- ing record to our ‘age old’ rivals. The team of 10 players played in a round robin style competition where boys played two or even three sets. Our lower seeded team players Joe Rivlin, Sam Percy, Ryan Ward and Ben Chaisty had a tough afternoon not managing to win a set, leaving the match score at, 4 -0 Eton. The higher seeded team players Yoyo Chang, Toby Warren, Tom Man, Luca Chapman, Alfie Judge and Niall Hodgson had a better afternoon winning 6 matches and losing 2, leaving the match score tied at 6 all. Yoyo Chang and Toby Warren won their deciding match 6 -4, making the overall match result 7-6!!! A huge congratulations to all of the U15 squad for remaining unbeaten, long may it last. A Note from the Headteacher Congratulations to our fabulous U15 Tennis Team. They have had an excellent unbroken run of victories this season, and were facing the prospect of having that broken by Eton this week. But, as you can read, they magnificently and heroically beat their strong opposition 7 -6. Well done boys! The Alumni dinner, with Chris Morrell as guest of honour, was a resounding success. There is a detailed re- port of the event in this newsletter, but it was significant for many reasons: it was a celebration of a unique teacher who has spent a lifetime making a huge difference to so many young people; it was the first major gathering of for many years, marking the rejuvenation of the Old Windsorians or Alumni associa- tion; it was further testament to the might of the coalition of talent of teachers, students, parents and friends of TWBS, who seem to make miracles happen. Thank you to all those who helped the evening go so well, and all those who had worked tirelessly over the months to bring everyone together. The main exams have finished! Many students will be only too aware of this fact. I would like to congratulate the year 11 and sixth form boys on their exemplary conduct in the exams. I hope that those who deserve it take this opportunity to relax and enjoy the calm before the storm of results day and moving on to their next destinations. But in true Windsor Boys’ School style, we don’t sit still – the year 10 and 9 exams start next week. Please refer to the schedule for further information and discuss expectations with your child. We expect the highest standards of behaviour and preparation. Thank you in advance to those parents who are helping with the car parking at the Triathlon this weekend. Your contribution of time, is greatly appreciated, as this event raises a significant sum of money to support extra-curricular activities of all kinds across the school. Any help throughout both days is greatly appreciat- ed. Speech Day is being held in the usual way on Wednesday 25 June at 7.30. Our guest of honour is an old boy, Ian McCaig, who is co-founder and chief strategy officer at Qubit. Ian worked as a director with Google for six important years as it took over the way we work on the internet. He is also a Henley winner and national level gold medalist in . We are all looking forward to hearing his success story since leaving TWBS in 1999.

Junior Tennis trip to Queens On Monday 9 June 2014 we took nineteen U14 and U15 boys to the opening day at Aegon Tennis Champion- ships, Queens Club . What a venue.... as we walked into the grounds we were surrounded by red brick buildings, charm of the old club house and some impressive temporary stands towering over fifty foot tall. The first game on centre court was Englishman currently ranked 168 against Slovenian Blaz Rola currently ranked 97. With the home support behind him James battled to win first set 7 -5 and broke in the second set 6-4, to give him the win overall. The English success continued with currently ranked 134 against Jurgen Melzer currently ranked 56. Dan shot out the blocks with a 6 -3 win in the first set, lost the second set 7-6 on a tie break (2-7) and won the third 7-6 on a tie break (7-5). The highlight of the day came from the boys excitement of seeing how many famous tennis stars could sign their merchandise. The top signatures were from Daniel McGee, Jo -Wilfred Tsonga and . Special mention to Barney Evans for not only winning a Pro Baborlat tennis racket but also beating Tomas Berdych Czech number 1 on an Xbox live tennis game. Congratulations to the boys on their behaviour and etiquette around the grounds. Let's see how much they have learnt in their matches to come. Mr Jeffery, Mr Dollery and Mr Baggett

U15 vs Shiplake The trip to the Henley School involved 250 runs from the 20/20 encounter. The game was played in a superb spirit. The home side elected to bat and posed a very impressive 141. Some wayward bowling and a very quick out- field were capitalised upon by the hosts. The pick of the TWBS bowlers were relative newcomers, Barney Evans and Aaron Maggs. The pair deserve particular praise for each taking four wickets. The chase was too much as the boys were 30 runs shy of the target. Stanley Walsh played some fantastic shots in his 41, he was supported well by Hugo Sobte (19). The team should not be disheartened by this and rather aim to learn from the experience. Mr A Paul

Old Windsor Carnival On Saturday 7 June the Upper Schools Music Department took to the streets of Old Windsor to perform on the back of a lorry in the Old Windsor Carnival. It ended up being a very sunny afternoon and the students performed really well for over an hour. It was fun watching them balance and play their instruments whilst the lorry driver navigated around the streets. It was a fantastic occasion and the boys and girls involved did their schools and department proud. Special mention to George Prentis who came to join us with his bag- pipes! Christopher C Morrell – Legend of The Windsor Boys’ School TWBS Alumni Dinner – Saturday 7 June 2014 A spectacular event happened last Saturday evening that involved so many as- pects of the school – 200 guests, and the vast majority of them Alumni (old Boys, Old boy’s parents, and former staff) witnessed a unique and special event. The drive to develop the Alumni of the school is really developing and engaging with all the Old boys out there is now seen as a essential development for the on -going success of the school. The event on Saturday was designed to draw back as many Alumni as possible and wet their appetite for supporting the school in some form or another. Christopher C Morrell MBE has been at this school for 38 years and during that time inspired countless gener- ations of boys to be the best they can be, especially at extra-curricular activities. Chris over the years has made a massive impact on rugby, but perhaps his biggest achievement has been the school boat club and rowing. Over this time he has built the boat club from just four 6 th formers rowing into a vibrant part of the school with now over 80 boys regularly rowing each week. Not only that, the success he has achieved in this time has been huge, including countless National GOLDS and international representation to the Great Britain Squad. He was also directly involved as coach to the five wins at . He, therefore, was a huge draw to the Alumni when it was announced that he would be the after dinner speaker for this Alumni event, and they flocked back to hear him talk about his life and 38 years of un- patrolled dedication to the school. The evening itself was six months in the planning, and the organisation and setup of the event took many many hours including some very late nights in the last two weeks leading up to the event. Lighting, videos, music, food, decoration, cleaning, gardening and much more needed to be achieved to make the evening work. As always, teamwork was at the centre, and many thanks must go to everyone involved from parents to staff to boys. The Evening was introduced with The TWBS Big Band who performed an hours worth of quality music out on the sunny lawn as guests arrived. The sound they made was just fantastic and really set the tone for the even- ing. Once guests were sat down and the evening was introduced, they were given a surprise “Flash -Mob” style performance from boys and girls performing “Happy”. The students flooded in from the back of the hall and walked between tables - an exciting and energetic performance that really got everyone in the mood. The cast of Les Mis performed two sets during the evening. The first was a performance of Master of the House, with soloist Alex King. It was another chance for students to fill the hall with a blast of noise and sing- ing. Guests at the dinner were quickly pushed into their seats by the 60 students walking around - recreating that famous moment from Les Miserables. It was a fun and exciting performance.

The evening’s entertainment then finished with a medley of songs from Les Mis with soloists Ce- leste Denyer and Fern Morrey from WGS and Mi- chael Workman, James Hopkins, Jack Fogarty, Alex King, Lukas Evans Jones, Toby Rivlin and Tom Huxley-Golden from TWBS. The whole cast then joined them for a final blast of “Do You Hear the People Sing.” This performance was met with a standing ova- tion and was a wonderful and very powerful moment in the evening. The Music Department did themselves proud on the night and the boys and girls from the Upper Schools are a huge asset to Windsor and our schools. We thank the team of staff that work with them and rehearse with them and we thank each and eve- ry student for giving up their time to perform. The food for the evening, was a high class affair, and all the catering was achieved internally by the boys and parents. A platter of rowing and rugby surf n’ turf followed by Old Windsorian Slow Cooked Beef and home - made chunky chips, and UNO ANIMO triple chocolate shots and a cheese patter to finish. The boys were fan- tastic and the organisation in the kitchen, while high octane and pressurized in cooking for over 200 people, was remarkably calm at the same time. Particular note to Josh Walker in year 11 who was Head Chef, and ran the kitchen like a pro! Service was provided by nearly 40 boys who looked after their tables with real confi- dence and class, serving the food and clearing the tables as required. Outstanding all of them. Then there is Christopher C Morrell – A true Legend of The Windsor Boys’ School, the anticipation to him talk- ing was built through a number of speeches and videos. His initial welcome stirred the emotional juices, with a standing ovation of nearly three minutes saw this most modest of men touched deeply. A video recording of many Old boys talking about Chris and their experiences of him, highlighted just what an impact he has made throughout four decades of service. As he took to the stage, another standing ovation, before he delivered a moving, funny, sentimental and above all else deep insight into his incredible life, and his most vivid recollec- tions. As he finished, he challenged the Old Boys to re -engage to ensure the on-going survival of rowing in a , and to support the school to ensure the opportunities that they received as boys were still able to be offered to the current and future generations. A stunning moment, a third and even longer standing ovation, before perhaps the most moving moment of the night, as the boys read out his favourite poem, “IF” BY RUDYARD KIPLING. It finished the evening perfectly, and with nearly 300 people clapping and cheering as all the boys from music and the catering came into the hall to witness the speech, the deafening noise that finished the evening will live long in memories. Congratulations to all the musicians, parents, staff, and especially the boys for putting on a memorable even- ing. Above all else, congratulations to Chris on everything that he has achieved, which is still on -going, and for delivering such a great account of his life at The Windsor Boys’ School.
